Winnebago High School Winneb Presents Going Places in %7” Stephenson-Carroll Publishers, Lena, Illinois Blankcnbcrg Photographers, Kankakee, Illinois Durand Covers, Chicago, Illinois Dedication We, the Senior Class, wish to dedicate the 1967 WINNEB ri ? p j i to a very deserving group of adults .... the 1 (XIX S LUO They have purchased the foul board, the popcorn machine, and blazers for the varsity basketball players. They were instrumental in purchasing the lights for the football field. The Pancake Supper, the Sports Banquet, the concession stand at the football games and the party for the varsity basketball players were also sponsored by this group. We wish to express our heartfelt gratitude to them for the whole-hearted support they have given the teams and the school as well. 2 We, the staff of the 1967 Winneb, have accumu- lated a treasury of memories spanning an entire year of activities at Winnebago High. It has been the aim of our staff not only to recapture the wonderful moments of the past year, but also to acquaint the student body with the pur- poses and activities of the many organizations. We feel that if, in the years to come, the 1967 Winneb recalls many precious memories, our many hours of work will have been duly rewarded. 4 6 7 RICHARD BEUTH Pep Band 3,4; Band 1,2,3,4; Ger- man Club 1,2; FFA 2,3,4, Pres. 4; Basketball 1,2,4. Together they created a most memorable evening for everyone and a fitting farewell to the departing seniors. The theme for the event was “Evening in Venicef,, carried out amid boughs of pink blossoms, soft lights and flowing music. The shadow-blue sil- houette of a gondola added realism and a touch of magic to what was to be a perfect evening. The Prom of 1966 was certainly a high point of the year. 32 QUEEN - K. Three Coins in A Fountain” 1966 May Dance ‘ ‘Three Coins in a Fountain,” put on by the sophomores, provided many a very memorable evening, especially Cathy Clark and Larry Bridgeland who were crowned Queen and King of this May Dance. The ‘real live fountain' was a colorful attraction which enhanced the fanciful and romantic mood of the '66 May Dance. 33 Homecoming 34 ’66 Homecoming '66 seemed to hold much ex- citement, spirit, wind and work. It began with the traditional pow wow, continued with the hard- fought game with Beloit Turner, a spectacular homecoming performance by the band and pom pon girls after the introduction of the queen candidates at the game, and the Homecoming Dance the following night. The suspense mounted at the dance until the new king and queen, Mike Cunningham and Diana Merchant, were crowned by '65 king and queen Scott Whitney and Sheri Merchant. 35 36 37 Life at WHS is- studying. 38 assemblies. eating. 39 experiments. reading comics in physics class. questionable calls at basketball games. parades. Students are interested in learning about the people of the world. The American Field Service provides this opportunity by working to send students from WHS abroad and bringing a foreign student here. This year’s activities included Hola, everybody. I’m Gloria Maunela Ciudad Arevalo from Trujillo, Peru, your American Field Service student for 1966-67. First I must tell you all how much I’ve en- joyed being here in Winnebago. I can’t express how many wonderful things have happened to me. I arrived here in the United States August 21, 1966, in Miami, and spent two marvelous days there. From Miami I went to New York to visit the United Nations and several other places, then on to Chicago and finally to Winnebago. When school started I was rushed into school Fanara, K. Burd, M. I’ve had the opportunity to give several speeches for organizations and have met many people who were very kind to me. Since living here in the U.S. I’ve seen for myself that Americans don’t really go to night clubs all the time, that they aren’t all Go-Go girls, and they don’t all drive sports cars. My host family have been Mr. and Mrs. Robert Baker. They are a very wonderful family. The AFS Chapter couldn’t have chosen a better family for my stay here in America. I shall never forget my three sisters - Janice, who is a senior, Sheryl, who is in seventh grade, and Robin, who is in third grade. I also have two brothers- Laddy, who is a beagle (he is always scaring me to death) and Nicky, the parakeet. My Peruvian family consists of my father who owns a grocery store; my mother who is a house- wife; Daniel 31, who owns a grocery store; and twin sisters, Elena and Elsa, 29. Elena is a home ec teacher and Elsa is an accountant. Charles, 27, works in papa’s grocery store; Fryda, 24, is a nurse and Roger, 21, works in the bank. Daniel and Roger are the only married ones so far. Roger has a baby girl that was born 10 days after I left home. Then me, 18, I’m just the baby of the family. My plans for the future are being a student for five years; then I hope to be a social worker. I shall never forget this wonderful country and I hope to come again very SOON. Honor Society Becomes Service Organization This year under a new constitution, Winnebago’s chapter of the National Honor Society was acti- vated, committing itself to the service of the school and the community. The society fulfilled this commitment admirably by sponsoring numer- ous activities, ranging from tutoring in the high school to the tremendously successful “College and Trade School Night” in which high school students could meet and discuss college plans with the representatives of several institutions of higher learning. The annual Christmas party for the mentally handicapped, sponsored jointly by the NHS and FTA, demonstrated the society’s determination to carry out the high traditions of character, scholarship, leadership and service. Perhaps the highlight of the year came as the society sponsored its first annual National Honor Society Week. Featuring the annual induction program for new members, the week was de- signed to stimulate student interest and respect for the society and the principles for which it stands. It succeeded, for the National Honor Society has become a new and important voice at Winnebago High School. 54 Student Council Demonstrates Leadership SEATED-Mrs. Thiel, adviser; P. The high point came in the Byron Speech Tournament in which Winnebago placed a strong second behind the tournament champion — Byron. Ten out of the thirteen members of Winnebago’s team placed in the contest, receiv- ing one first place, four second places, two third places, one fourth place, and two fifth place wins. Winnebago went on to enter the District Speech Contest, placing three of its members in some of the roughest competition in the state. This year’s speech activities also included the one act play, “The Miracle Worker,” the story of Helen Keller’s early life with Anne Sullivan. The play was entered in the District Speech Contest, and although the play did not place, everyone felt confident that Winnebago had made a fine showing.
