It has been really great to stay here in Winnebago High School for one year. I came here on September 7, 1965, from my home town in Italy, Bologna. Pm eighteen, 5 foot 4, blue eyed, X pounds, indefinite color of hair, noisy, talkative. I love music, books, traveling and studying foreign languages. In Italy I attend a technical high school. My home town is very ancient—I myself, until two years ago, lived in a house built during the thirteenth century. In Bologna (pronounced Balonehya) there are about 600,000 people. My town has three nicknames: “the learned” because of our university which is one of the best and oldest in Europe, “the fat” because of our wonderful foods, known in all the world (tortellini, lasagne and ravioli, all were originated in my town) and last, “la turrita”; I don’t know the translation for this word, but it means “with many towers” because during the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries, all the powerful families used to have a tower in their house — many of them can still be seen. My town is also one of the most important points in Italian railroads and highways, so every year, especially during springtime, we have many tourists from everywhere. My Italian family is composed of my mother, my eldest sister Annamaria, who is married and has two little girls, my other sister Franca, who is also married and has a little baby boy. Here in Winnebago I live with the Warren Carlsons, Dad, Mom, Richard, a sophomore at Platteville University, Ann, junior here (who doesn’t know her?), Kristine, sophomore and bubbling cheerleader, and Bruce, eighth grader. I will leave the U.S.A. from New York on July 26, 1966 ... but in two years I’ll be back! Arrivederci! Luisa Pece David Williams, Luisa Pece. This past summer I had the privilege of living with a family in Germany through the AFS Americans Abroad Program. I was notified that I was to go about June 15th, and set sail from New York on June 26. Ten long days later we arrived in Rotterdam, and shortly thereafter I joined my family. My family consisted of my father, August Rasche, who was a traveling executive for a meatpacking firm, my mother, and two brothers, Wolfgang, seventeen, and Ernst August, twelve. A fifth member was a Siamese cat named, quite appropriately, Pussy. We lived in a small town of about 2000 called Badbergen, in northern Germany. The area was much like it is around here, relatively flat, but with more trees. I spent a very enjoyable summer, swimming, fishing, riding my bike, making mistakes in German, and doing a lot of learning and picture taking. At the end of the summer all German AFS students gathered in Bremen for an end-of-stay meeting. Then on the first of September I boarded a jet in Hamburg and flew home, after the most wonderful summer of my life.
