His vast and interesting background began with his B.S. which he received from U. Mass in 1957. He added to his collection of degrees in 1958 with his M Ed from Pennsylvania State University, and with the Post M. Ed that he earned from U.N.H. in 1973. But far from being a stuffy, professor type, Mr. Hawley’s sense of humor and never dying spirit (never the one to pass up the opportuni- ty to dress up during Spirit Week) have lit up the halls of WHS since he arrived as principal 18 years ago. He cares about the students, and fitting it was when Mr. Hawley was named President of the National Association of Secondary School Principals. It is due to your class, dignity, and friendliness, that we, the Class of 1986 would like to show our apprecia- tion of all he does, by dedicating the 1986 Sachem to Mr. Eugene R. Hawley. He was strict, but his students didn’t mind because he was a good teacher, and most of all he cared. Allen Bushold was unique, because for 31V2 years he taught at Win- nacunnet and for all those years he was constantly taking interest in the students always trying to help. During his years at Winnacunnet he was a housemaster, the head of the English Department, and an assistant principal. In addition to teaching, he enjoyed golf and tennis, and he coached tennis privately. He started teaching in 1958 after obtaining two degrees from Boston University. Besides the young people at WHS who ap- preciated Mr. Bushold, there were three kids at home and then two grandchildren who also enjoyed his company. They were fortunate to have a dad and granddad like him, just as we were to have him as our friend. Because Allen Bushold was so much a part of Winnacunnet High School, its faculty and its history, we wish to honor his memory. Now remember hum, if you don’t know the words.. c H O R U s and no waving to family or friends. OPEN WIDE! Harmonize that hum! Every day a select group of students gather in the music room to practice their choral ability. However, it is not all singing. There are scale steps, note values, and music reading to be learned. The chorus doesn’t just per- form complex classical music but fast moving pop music. During the course of the year, the chorus per- forms in the Spring, Winter, and Christmas concerts. Also under the supervision of Mr. Ray, the chorus as well as the band, will ex- change performances with Pennsylvania. This year looks to be very promising with four students who entered the All-States. The Chamber Singers are a select group of singers from the Chorus. The group rehearses several times a week after school. In addi- tion to performing at the four concerts this year, they have sung at various civic functions. The style of music differs slightly from the Chorus, focusing on vocal jazz, and pop. The Chamber singers have a lot of fun while also working hard. Each year is ended by having a recording session of a selection of the best songs. Features 151 DRAMA The drama group at Winnacunnet provides entertain- ment twice a year to the school and to the community. In 1985 the group produced under the direction of Russ Charron both “The Sound of Music” and “Cheaper By the Dozen.” Students’ creativity was tested in drama, music, scenery, costuming, and make-up this year, and all passed the tests. The spring production audition saw a variety of shapes, sizes, and ages, for “The Sound of Music” had need of all ages and types of characters. The show became a truly community show; for everyone, whether cast member or musician, represented the talent of our towns not just our school. Both directors Richard Ray and Stan Bednarz lent their special musical expertise to Russ Charron’s dramatic direction for an unusually ambitious production of “The Sound of Music.” In the Fall “Cheaper By the Dozen” reflected the more “serious” talents of the cast members and techies. Once again the crew produced a memorable, well- rehearsed production. The energy and dedication of each and every member of the drama group is to be commended. And there are the pious among us.. . The activities included volleyball, basketball, floor hockey, ping pong, toilet paper unroll, cooking contest, ice cream eating, backgammon, checkers, trivial pursuit, hall decorating, scavenger hunt, tug-of-war, egg toss, chess, cribbage, and the favorite, the Lip Sync contest. The follow- ing students led by their ad- visor Mrs. Sue Patenaude are representing Winnacunnet High School this year: Dennis Barrett, Greg Doubek, Leslie Kaspzak, Kim Malsam, Steven MacFarlane, Kent Thompson, Traci Tompson, Christina Tagupa, Ed Twombly, Julie Woolsey, and Susan Xavier. Will the lecture be that exciting? Professor Lester Fisher lectures the students on “Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness in a time rife with racism.” 161 NHS The National Honor Society is an organization of selective students who have demonstrated the four outstanding qualities of leadership, service, scholar- ship and character. Teams throughout the tri-state league meet once a month and com- pete against each other in different categories of Math. Points are awarded for correct answers with the harder questions being worth more points. The team is made up of students from all grade levels, however only ten members are allowed to compete at each meet. With the strong showing this year and the practiced team members on next year’s team Winnacunnet should expect to see a strong math team once again next season. 164 Features Why does Rob look more confident than team captain Dave? For one week, we were zapped back into the 1850’s to experience travel with a covered wagon headed for the new western frontier. The trip was filled with nonstop excitement. Where else but in this exciting period of time in history could you use an old- fashioned privvy, milk a cow, square dance to the toe-tapping beat of a violin, wear stylish clothing, attend class in a one-room schoolhouse, pack a wagon pulled by real oxen, push it up grueling hills, make real ice cream, and enjoy the thrills of a snipe hunt??! Sadly, 1984-85 was the last year for the West Class at Winnacunnet, but the “West Spirit” will always live on! 166 Features School days again! The way we were. Chores at 5 am? Is it edible. Paul? 167 YEARBOOK For the first time in recent history, the yearbook became an ac- credited class; but the story was the same. To discuss, plan, layout, organize, and finally produce a finished and decent yearbook are very demanding tasks. This year’s Sachem was aided tremendously by the will, determination, and never tiring advisor, Ms. Banda. She helped lead the staff through the ever constant panicky situations caused by errors, misplaced or lost photos, and especially by those horrible deadlines. Nonetheless, our Sachem staff is very proud of the fine yearbook we produced, and hope it is acclaimed as the best Sachem ever! 168 Features WINNACHRONICAL Every Tuesday during lunch you will notice that most people in the cafe are doing the same thing. Other than eating, they are reading. What could hold everyone’s at- tention in the cafe? Nothing but the Winnachronicle, our school newspaper, of course! Under a new advisor, Mrs. Downer, the newspaper staff started almost from scratch this year, with only a few veterans from last year. With round-the-clock events, late-breaking news, and urgent deadlines, getting the paper out every week was hectic, but editor Debbie Ouellette was supported by a great staff. Editors spurred on writers and photographers to produce a fine literary and artistic work. Now veterans, the staff all have great expectations for the future. 169 H O M E C 0 M 1 N G 170 Homecoming is one of the most anticipated weekends of the school year. The game with Exeter, the pep rally, and the costume dance whirl with excitement. It’s a time for enthusiasm, good spirits, and loud voices! This year Mr. Hawley said that he wanted to see more spirit from the students ... so we gave it to him! Our an- nual Homecoming Pep Rally was the best it had been for years. The classes showed great enthusiasm in the events, especially in the “Mr. Cool Guy” contest when three senior boys were chosen to prove how “cool” they really were. Mark Shultz proved to be the “coolest” by sitting on a block of ice the longest. Our game with arch rival Exeter was a loss despite the raving cries of Warrior supporters. However, any disappointment there was lost by the time of the evening dance. Characters of the “silver screen” danced wildly if not rhythmically as the Homecoming of 1985 drew to a tumultuous close. CHEERLEADING The Winnacunnet Cheerleading Squad is a supportive, vital cog in leading our school teams to victory. Their practices are longer and tougher than many of us imagine. Nights after school the cheerleaders stay to practice routines and to ready themselves for upcoming games. Not only do the girls cheer the team and the crowd, they also participate in competitions to test their skill. They are a trained team, and they owe their expertise to the Donaldsons who spend so many hours and so much energy on the team. Thanks for the sup- port, girls! Where's your co-ordination, girls? Finishing the regular season with an 8-4-1 record, the Warriors were seeded 13th in the state tournament, drawing 4 ranked Pinkerton in the first round. Despite losing the game 3-2, the Warrior hooters gave Pinkerton an excellent fight, battling up to the very last second. After the see-sawing regulation was com- plete, the score was tied at 1-1. Neither team scored in the action-packed two 5-minute overtimes and two 5-minute sudden-death overtimes, so the teams remained deadlocked at 1-1. Chris Robie put the Warriors ahead briefly, 2-1, but Pinkerton soon knotted the score 2-2 in the ten-man shootout. Pinkerton finally put the relentless War- riors to rest by scoring in the sudden-death shootout, 3-2. Coach Foote noted at the banquet that this year’s varsity squad was comprised of the hardest workers he’s ever had. This certainly was a “never say die” team! Because all but three starters had graduated, this year was a rebuilding year. Tri- Captains, Sean Facey, Paul Niemi, and Charlie Struckel were called upon to provide leadership each and every week of the season. Although they were a young, in- experienced team, they remained in the play-off hunt. The season ended with a loss to Exeter, leav- ing the Warriors with a 3-5 record for the year. It was an exceptional effort, ’though the team started slow and lost heartbreakers against Somersworth and Exeter. Much credit goes to the fine players who emerged this Fall. Running backs Dean Perkins, Sean Facey, and Charlie Struckel were cited as key performers. Quarterback, Paul Downey, also established himself as a quality player. Even though the wins were not the highest for the team this year, effort and attitude were big big parts of the program. Next year will be a fresh start for the girls with Miss Sicotte return- ing as the new varsity advisor; Mrs. Royal will be by her side as the faithful J.V. coach that she has been to all of us at least once. 1986 is predicted to be a suc- cessful season, for there are 8 girls returning with varsity experience. Our appreciation is given to Miss French (now known as Mrs. Graf) for all the help she has given us, not only as a coach but as a friend. We give a special thanks to her for returning this past year to coach us even though she wasn’t a WHS staff member! Thank You. Are the rest of you coming? 186 HOCKEY One more and we’ve made it! Take the Challenge 189 GOLF This year’s varsity golf team ac- complished what no other WHS golf squad has been able to do. It cap- tured the state’s team championship title on October 9 at the Concord Country Club. The Warrior linksters were able to fight off all challengers with the six-man tourney team of Pete Falcone, Jeff Barnes, Tim Mullen, Mark Hollick, Sean Koch, and Bill Flanagan. Their total, taking the best five of the six scores, was a strong 418, eight strokes better than runner-up Nashua. In the individual portion of the tourney Pete finished 10th with scores of 81-81, and Jeff, Sean, and Bill finished in the top twenty-five with two round totals of 169, 173, and 168 respectively. Coach Jim Sherrin praised the squad’s year, noting not only the state title, but also their fine 19-3 record which garnered them with the state’s 1 ranking all season long. This year’s team was senior-laden, with seven of its members to be lost to gradua- tion. However, with returning starters Tim and Sean, next year’s team has the nucleus of a repeat championship team. Although the girls came up with only 4 wins, many of their opponents had to take them on to a grueling 3rd match. The varsity team was definitely at its best due to the power and experience of eight seniors and two juniors. The J.V. team came up with a few surprises of their own, which will hopefully be a factor in determining their success next year. Withstanding early season problems, the boys per- formed well as a team all year demonstrating the spirit necessary for success. The team, which finished seventh in the class meet, was lead by Captain Dennis Barrett who placed fourteenth in the class L meet and 37th in the state meet. The girls’ team was made up of a very young group which was mostly sophomores. Going into the season with little experience they learned quickly and placed an impressive ninth in the class L meet. The lady Warriors were led by Amy Gonthier’s performance in both the class and state meet. Both teams look forward to even greater success next fall. The team struggled early in the season but led by Coach Stipe, the season ended on a strong note with a string of victories. The team had a qualifier for the state meet in nearly every event including Captains Dennis Barrett, A1 Scott, and Scott MacDonald in each one. The highlight of the State meet was Junior T. J. However, the team ended the regular season with a respectable 11 wins and 7 losses. The key to the Warriors’ success this year was a balanced front five. Lee Marelli came along in the pre-season to give the Warriors an inside threat. Jeff Barnes and Brian Chase gave the team an outside game as well as stolid dribbling ability to fill the two guard positions. The two forward slots were filled by the co-captains Mark Hollick and Greg Stiles. They added their rebounding and shooting abilities to balance the starting five. Coming off the bench were senior Rob Kocsmiersky and freshman John Dalton who added their ball- handling and shooting abilities respectively. The effort of the team as a whole was com- mendable. With determination and great hopes, the team successfully came through the season on top. Is coach Ford rolling dice or giving advice? Jeff, it's your opponent’s foot that should hurt. Sophomore Maura Healey broke the school record by get- ting 130 assists during the season. With the fluctuation of team members due to illnesses and injuries, there were many ups and downs to conquer. Unfortunate- ly, the team started badly, losing four in a row to begin a season-long struggle to win games. The team ended up with a disap- pointing record of 5-12-3 for the season, however, there were highlights to the year: the 4-3 overtime win over St. Thomas and the two “drubbings” of Stevens High. Of- fensively, the team was led by high scoring captain and center iceman Andy Janvrin and by sidekick Joe Roy. Both scored enough to keep the iceman in the thick of things. Slugger Jake Fowler made the Winnacunnet baseball record books with his .414 batting average and 29 hits. He also hit for the cycle against Timberlane. Stalwart catcher, Jeff Niejadlik, collected 20+ for the third straight season and will be sorely missed at and behind the plate.
