A Stiver CELEBRATION Historical Notes On the name Winnacunnet By Mr. James W. Tucker of Hampton In the early part of the seventeenth century the Indians had a settle- ment in the general area north of what is now Hampton Harbor and its tributary rivers — a settlement they called Winnacunnet. Probably members of the Wompanoag Tribe lived on the high ground which sloped east and south to ocean harbor and river. Evidences of their settlement in the form of arrow heads and beds of clam shells have been found even in recent years. Many records of the General Court of Massachusetts, relating to the settlement of Hampton, refer to the area by its Inkean name, Win- nacunnet. On March 3, 1636, more than two years before Hampton was officially settled by the Rev. Steven Bachiler and followers, the Court ordered That there be a plantation settled at Winnacunnet. On November 2, 1638, the Court granted that Mr. Steven Bachiler and others shall have the liberty to begin a plantation at Winnacunnet. In all probability, it was October 14, 1638, that the founders sailed up the Hampton River in the shallop which brought them from Newbury to the new plantation. On June 7, 1639, it was enacted by the General Court held the same year and, according to town records, at Mr. Bachelor's request, it was recorded that Winnacunnet shall be called Hampton. As to the meaning of the word Winnacunnet Honorable C. E. Pot- ter, a state authority on the Indian language who lived at Hillsborough, wrote that Winnacunnet means The Beautiful Place of Pines, or the Pleasant Place of Pines. A Maine authority. Rev. Edward Ballard of Brunswick, translated the word to mean, The Beautiful Place of Pines. The original boundaries of Hampton included the following towns, since set apart in whole or in part: Sandown, Kingston, East Kingston, Kensinton, Seabrook, Hampton Falls, North Hampton and Tye. At the outset Hampton included approximately 100 square miles from which is derived its original name. Now, the town of Hampton comprises only some 8,000 acres, a quarter of which is marshland.
