SEABROOK — HAMPTON — HAMP TON I-AI.I.S NOR I H HAMP I ON miacunnet h[icfh School Hampton, Hew Hampshire OJ8-4- 1984 SACHEM A Stiver CELEBRATION Historical Notes On the name Winnacunnet By Mr. James W. Tucker of Hampton In the early part of the seventeenth century the Indians had a settle- ment in the general area north of what is now Hampton Harbor and its tributary rivers — a settlement they called Winnacunnet. Probably members of the Wompanoag Tribe lived on the high ground which sloped east and south to ocean harbor and river. Evidences of their settlement in the form of arrow heads and beds of clam shells have been found even in recent years. Many records of the General Court of Massachusetts, relating to the settlement of Hampton, refer to the area by its Inkean name, Win- nacunnet. On March 3, 1636, more than two years before Hampton was officially settled by the Rev. Steven Bachiler and followers, the Court ordered That there be a plantation settled at Winnacunnet. On November 2, 1638, the Court granted that Mr. Steven Bachiler and others shall have the liberty to begin a plantation at Winnacunnet. In all probability, it was October 14, 1638, that the founders sailed up the Hampton River in the shallop which brought them from Newbury to the new plantation. On June 7, 1639, it was enacted by the General Court held the same year and, according to town records, at Mr. Bachelor's request, it was recorded that Winnacunnet shall be called Hampton. As to the meaning of the word Winnacunnet Honorable C. E. Pot- ter, a state authority on the Indian language who lived at Hillsborough, wrote that Winnacunnet means The Beautiful Place of Pines, or the Pleasant Place of Pines. A Maine authority. Rev. Edward Ballard of Brunswick, translated the word to mean, The Beautiful Place of Pines. The original boundaries of Hampton included the following towns, since set apart in whole or in part: Sandown, Kingston, East Kingston, Kensinton, Seabrook, Hampton Falls, North Hampton and Tye. At the outset Hampton included approximately 100 square miles from which is derived its original name. Now, the town of Hampton comprises only some 8,000 acres, a quarter of which is marshland. A Silver DEDICATION Take each day as a new challenge and a new learning experience. When that is gone, it is time to move on. A Dedication: A name, often, a message, prefixed to a book, express- ing affection for a friend or cause. The name is Jamie Marston. The message is Thank You. You dedicated yourself to us as a counselor, a class advisor, and as a friend. You struggled with us and for us to make high school life a challenge and a learning experience. Now that it is time to move on, we, the class of Nineteen-Hundred Eighty-four, take this opportunity to give you a special appreciation. With most sincere gratitude this 1984 Silver Celebration is dedicated to you. Miss Jamie Marston. 4 Dedication Above: Dennis McGrath flashes a smile for the camera. A Silver CELEBRATION The past 25 years have represented a great deal of change at Winnacunnet. The most intense change in our country's history has occurred dur- ing this period. YV.H.S. has shared the thrill as well as the pains of growth. The campus has witnessed changes from fashions and clothes, hairstyles, curriculum and music. Two people who have witnessed W.H.S. from its birth are Mr. Dodge and Mr. Ladd. “The facilities have improved for the better and the curriculum has expanded tremendously, says Mr. Ladd. The Senior Class is happy to be the Silver An- niversary Class and is fortunate to rest on the laurels of the past. 7 WE'VE COME A LONG WAY Twenty-five years has brought about many changes to Winnacunnet. Gone is the Smoke Signal newspaper, the football queen and the wrestling team. Although these things have faded into the past, we still have the tradi- tions of Homecoming, Winnacarnival and the Exeter Blue Hawk rivalry. Our school colors remain Blue and White. Two faculty members have witnessed these changes. Mr. Ladd and Mr. Dodge are the only staff members who were here when the doors first opened. Even though many changes have occurred, school spirit has and will always be present. — A Silver — CELEBRATION Old vs. New 9 -----A Student Life CELEBRATION Our Celebration started on Monday mornings and continued through the weekends. Something was always happening. Academically, aceing an important test, giving oral reports, or just starting that paper that was due the next morning. After school, many of us spent hours practicing for Saturday's game, decorating for Friday night's dance, or meeting with our advisors. While many others were busy at their after school jobs. No matter what we were doing, “dedicated was the word that described our attitude. With a “Never say die outlook, we strived to attain our goals. During lunch periods, it's not only a time to eat, but a time to do last minute homework. Relaxing out on the front lawn, Eric Schmidt prepares for his next class. 10 Student Life Lunch time was a big part of the school day; crowded tables, long lines and of course school lunches. Enjoying his lunch, Dave Croteau paused for a picture. Jeans and jean jackets were a popular out- fit this past year. Here Mike and Dave model this typical attire. Even after the game, fans stay to see the post football show put on by the warrior players. This familiar group of seniors gathered to watch. Victory was on the minds of many players when re- turning to play the second half of the Merrimack game. Leading the fired up Warriors were co-captains Ron Munday and John Arakelian. OPEN ARMS Junior Prom 83 It was a memorable night for everyone, a night that most of us had waited for and looked forward to for many months. It was our Junior Prom, a night not soon to be forgotten. With the special theme of Open Arms, the prom was held at the Ashworth by the Sea. The night was full of energy and delight as everyone danced to the music of Cruzin. Towards the end of the night, tensions were mounting as the ballots for the queen and her court were being counted. After the ballots had been counted Mr. Gagne announced the Queen, Sara Price and her court, Brenda Downey, Lynn Grandmasion, Amy Adams, Mary Cutshall, Michelle Blaisdell, and Trudy Gagne. This was a perfect way to end the evening. Our dreams had been realized, and we had recorded this very memorable moment. The tuxes and gowns were put away, but the memories linger on. Right: Weekends began exactly at 2:15 on Fridays. The sound of the bell released us from the Academic life and ushered in the start of our celebration. Gathering their books and coats, Trudy Gagne, Nick Thayer and Kathy McRae are anxious to leave. Below: The Junior Class consession stand came to life on most Saturdays. Spending her Saturday working for the Junior class, Mikelanne Marino waits on a customer. A WEEKEND CELEBRA TION- Once the 2:15 bell rang on Friday, the students were out of the school in a flash. No more school for 58 hours! For most of us just hearing the bell was a sigh of relief. Weekends meant total freedom from school. These two days were considered a freedom, for there were many things to look forward to. We could go to a dance, a sporting event, or just hav- ing two days of total relaxation. For some, the weekends brought about anticipation, anxiety, victory or defeat. Many returned to the school to participate in sports related events. People did not come to the sports events just to participate in the events, but also came to be with friends. Others came for different reasons such as ex- tra curricular activities such as plays, concerts and other after school events. Often there were lessons to be learned at such events such as being a good sport, or playing the game. After the event was finished (whether it was a victory or a defeat) there was still a sense of PRIDE among us all. The school spirit and enthusiasm was always present and kept us going. Top Left: After many long morning practices, Gayle Foster performs with the warrior marching band during the halftime show. Above: A familiar sight at the football games was a war- rior cheerleader. Co-captain Patti Newcomb shows her spirit as she cheers the team on. Left: A weekend event that usually came to mind was a football game. Showing their true warrior spirit, Brenda Downey and Kathy Donahoe spent Saturday after- noon watching the game. Student Life 15 WESTWARD HO! Below: The day of the trip! Mr. Rice and Brian Sawyer start to organize packing the truck. Right: Jason Bowley did the annual painting of the Norlands wagon. When thinking about the West class, one has a feeling of uncertainty. Ques- tions surface — History and English combined? T wo periods long? What is one to expect? When entering the West class, singular and unique ex- periences continue to grow compared to the routine of the regular class. While playing 1856 simulation games, one has fun, yet can still learn something about History and English. The games also show how to use QUICK THINKING and QUICK REASONING. They can also bring out the stupidity if one does not think cor- rectly (kicking in doors). Toward the end of the year the game became real when the class takes a four day trip to the Norlands in East Livermore, Maine. The Norlands is a working farm where life is geared around the 1800's. In the beginning, the work is fun, but towards the end it becomes strenuous (especially when it rains). All in all, the West was one of the best experiences the members of the class will remember. 16 The West The only staple of bread was biscuits! A job Mrs. Millett did one morning. Upper left: All of the gear made the wagon and back packs heavy. When going up the hill, the wagon jack knifed because of the weight. As it jackknifed, everyone scattered and slowly appeared when the wagon was back on its track. Middle top: The morning campsite was quite hectic, for breakfast was being prepared. Bottom right: As the winter hay was delivered, Jeff Ham and Dave Brown helped put it in the loft. The West 17 The Working Class During our high school years, spending the buck was a very popular pastime. New clothes, the movies, and going on dates were the basic necessities of high school life. When the handouts from Mom and Dad became fewer and fewer, we finally realized that some drastic changes would have to take place. Would we cut down on the amount of clothes we bought or stay home and watch T.V.? Not a chance! The only alternative was to get a job! The supermarkets, drug stores and fast food restaurants were just a few of the many places where we could find our classmates. A good part of the weekends were spent earning ex- tra dollars. This became a part of our lives during our high school years. = HOMECOMING '84' Although Winnacunnet High School is twenty-five years old this year. Homecoming is a relatively new event. There may have been other activities that excited the classes of earlier years, but without a doubt. Homecoming is one of our most memorable times. There is something about the total school attitude that made the days during spirit week full of laughter and joy. Students, staff and faculty alike joined in each day to help build a near fever pitch by Homecoming Weekend. Spirit Week was five full days of acting crazy. Each day was designated to represent a different spirited theme. Monday was T- Shirt and Jeans day; Tuesday was Hat, Sunglasses and Tie day; Wednesday was Preppy day; Thurs- day was Punk day; and Friday each class, as well as the teachers and staff, wore a different color. It was amazing to see the teachers dressed in so many wild and imaginative outfits. The Homecoming game against Exeter was postponed until Sunday because of bad weather, but this made the dance on Saturday night all-the-more successful. =HOMECOMING '84' The last but certainly not least event of Homecoming was the Ex- eter game. Postponed from Saturday because of weather conditions, the kickoff was at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. This was not only our Homecoming game against our rivals — THE BLUE HAWKS. It was our chance to prove who was boss. We hadn't beaten the Exeter squad in a long time — too long, and this was to be the day. And so it happened, the stands filled with fans and victory was to be within our reach. The Warriors, dominated the game from the start to the finish and owed much of their suc- cess to the incredible defense. The unbeatable offense however, headed by quarterback Dave Brown, should not go unmentioned with this win. When the time clock had finally wound down, it proved to everyone who was indeed the best. The final tally: W.H.S. 11 — Exeter 0. Warrior pride had shown through once again, as we ended our Homecoming Celebration. Homecoming 23 POWDER PUFF The day finally arrived. Girls from both the Junior and Senior class showed up to play ball, and have some fun too! Anyone who thought that girls couldn't play this “man's sport quickly changed their minds after watching the game. The game was off to a slow start, but the Juniors picked up the pace with the first touchdown of the game. The Seniors, who were upset with this, tightened up their defense. Their skill and clever plan- ning helped them to hold off the Juniors and soon regain control of the game. Quarterback Laura McGrail played superbly, and the Seniors were on the board to tie up the score. The game ended in a tie which led them into overtime. Each team was allowed four plays at the ten yardline. The Seniors held back the Juniors and were able to score a touchdown on a quarterback pass which brought the game to an end. Seniors 12 and Juniors 6. As the girls proved, football is definitely not for men only! “FRISKY BUSINESS” FOR KEITH LEMERISE A member of the club demonstrating a little culture. Winacunnet has been celebrating the traditional Winnacarnival for twenty-five years. This is the time of the year when each class pulls together to compete against each other, to prove which is the strongest class. The spirit during this week of events is tremendous, especially towards the end of the week when the race narrows down to deter- mine the winner. This year's car- nival proved to be a tough, highly competitive contest for most of the classes, leaving the final deci- sion upon a few of the last events. The carnival activities began with the Winnabowl. In this event, each class displayed its ex- cellence in various sporting events. The Senior class dominated the Winnabowl, the girls won both floor hockey and basketball, and the boys did their best and placed well in all events. A new contest introduced to Winnacarnival was LIP SINC. This contest had class members dress up and mouth the words of a certain rock group. The Juniors stole the show by imitating the Village People. Another new event introduced to Winnacarnival was the HALL DECORATING contest, which proved to make the school a little more festive in appearance. Each class was assigned a certain hall in the school to decorate and what a job they did! The class that came out on top of the HALL DECORATING was the Sophomore class. The TOILET PAPER ROLL was still another new event. The class that unrolled the fastest was the Sophomore class. One wonders how they practiced for this event? Many other traditional events were divided among the classes, and the scoring for the events was very close. The Freshman class had a little trouble getting into the swing of things, since it was their first year. Better luck in the years to come! One of the events that took place outside was the water balloon toss. Dennis McGrath gets ready to toss the balloon to his partner. Arm wrestling was a very interesting and creative event for both the male and females, but Sue Gagne and Beth Cotter show that this was not just a sport for boys. Middle photo: TA DA! , says Terry Jutris as she dances in front of the camera. 30 Winnacarnival Dance After a whole week of battling it to the end, the classes joined together for the traditional Win- nacarnival Dance. This dance brought FROSTY FROLICS to a triumphant end. Everyone was anxiously waiting to hear the results of the competition and towards the end of the night the results were in. The Seniors had won with a total of 147 points, and it was Ken Carroon and Cristie Daboul that accepted the title of the King and Queen of Winnacar- nival. The Sophomores came in second with 144 points, the Juniors third with 128 points, and last but not least the Freshmen with a total of 109 points. The spirit that was displayed during the week of FROSTY FROLICS was unforgettable! All of the classes displayed a lot of ef- fort trying to show who was the strongest class. In retrospect all classes were the winners. It was the spirit and fun everyone shared that counted the most. Top photo: The Winnacarnival Dance Court included Tom Brown and Sue McDermott representing the freshmen, Karen Carroon and Christie Daboul (King and Queen) representing the Seniors, Lisa Flanders and Dave Murray representing the Juniors, and Carole Lovejoy and Chris Silver representing the Sophomores. They help us through the worst of times and share with us the best of times. Our high school years are especially important when it comes to friends. Meeting new people and engaging into a new friend- ship is as important as renewing an old one, but what really is a true friend? A friend is . .. Someone with whom you can be completely honest Someone who you can trust and respect Someone to talk to when things are going great Someone to talk to when things are going wrong Someone who gives you support in times of need Someone who is there when you need that extra boost of confidence Someone who gives you back exactly what you have given them. It s our own special friends that make it all worthwhile! They are not only the best of friends, but they dress alike too! Chris Greer and Gayle Lovejoy pose for a picture. The spirit and dedication of the band was evident in all they did. Their music generated enthusiasm at football games and parades to pep rallies, and were a welcome sight at any assembly. Marching Band CONCERT BAND The W.H.S. Warrior Band is synonymous with dedication. The band strives each year to bring to Winnacunnet a musical program that reverberates with quality. Under the guidance of Mr. Stan Bednarz, the band has been successful in pursuing this goal, turning out a fine crop of musicians each year. The band exhibits its skills in a series of concerts. The season commences with the Christmas concert, and culminates with the annual exchange concert which is be- ing held with Susquehanna Township H.S., Harrisburg, PA. The band ex- perience is a mixture of good times and good people. It not only provides lasting memories, but cements numerous friendships. 36 Band F R C E H S O H R M U A s N CHORUS Chorus ... The very word starts you humming your favorite tunes. That's exactly what about 107 assorted W.H.S. scholars do every day periods 4-5. All of it isn't fun and games, though. They must learn scale steps, sharp and flat sequences, and also must memorize every song (including some in Latin, Spanish, and Italian!) before a concert. Note for note, this year's Chorus, commanded by Mr. Richard Ray and his accompanist, Michelle Blaisdell, has proved that music is the most ex- pressive (and certainly most fun) of all forms of art. 38 Chorus c H A M B E R S I N G E R S Chorus 39 Scholars have PhD's. The Army has its Special Forces. Chorus has the Chamber Singers, an elite, highly mobile, and extremely fine-tuned set of musicians. The Chamber Singers tackle the tough stuff and seem to do a pretty good job at it, too. Accompanist Laura Hillier, who has an equally challenging job, is the group's magic fingers. All in all, the Chamber Singers have shown themselves to be a tough, dedicated, and sometimes funny group of individuals. No need to elaborate, for they have done well; and this year, they did well as a team, too. CHALLENGE! Who won the English football cup in 1949? Who cares? Well, ask any member of this year's Challenge team, and they will pro- bably know. The Granite State Challenge team is a col- ossal conglomeration of some mighty wick- ed brains. Quick recall was the require- ment, and the team has it. Gary Patenaude, Dave Young, Steve Trask, Mona Scrofano, and coach Mr. Haggerty were the front run- ners, with Les Pierce and John Dodge think- ing up a storm as back-ups. The big day was Jan. 23, but the Challengers lost out to Interlakes in their one and only battle, 215-130. John Dodge's lucky hat fell off, and Mr. Haggerty lost his appetite, but they thought they did a pretty fine job. Oh, yes. The football cup: Wolverhampton Wanderers beat Lester, 3-1. = SHS = The Miguel de Cervantes Chapter of Winnacunnet High School held its first Spanish Honor Society in- duction. The initiation took place on the 11th of May, 1983. The S.H.S., started by Mrs. Hiller last spring, gives those students excelling in their Spanish studies recognition for their dedica- tion and hard work. = NHS= The National Honor Socie- ty consists of a select group of students who exemplify the qualities of leadership, character, scholarship, and service. The N.H.S. is a charitable organization which contributes a great deal of time and money to many causes. The N.H.S. is a very prominent addition to both the school and community. Highlights from this year's N.H.S. include bake sales, a crafts fair, and selling arm bands for the Lemerise fund. They also sponsored a dance and entered a float in the Christmas parade. To top it all off, the members attend- ed a statewide convention in Manchester in the fall. Bottom row: John Dodge, Laura Moulton, Kathleen Wheeler, Mona Scrofano, Christie DaBoul and Nick Paarlberg. Ever wonder what hap- pens to the stuff the Hampton Union doesn't print? Well, wonder no more. A serious group of journalists advised by the indomitable Mr. Thomas Haggerty, have succeeded in finding all the news that's fit to print. Editors John R. Dodge and Brett Tompson lead the group in the hard work category, supported by such people as Vera O'Connell, Jenny Banda, and camera man Mike Roobian. Many others help with the hard work. The Informant this year promises to be a students' newspaper, and in all aspects, a work of art. BEHIND THE SCENES Techies. Techies. Techies. So what's the big deal about techies? What is a techie? I'Ll tell you, I don't know. A techie is some sort of weird growth that flourishes during the dramatic productions of the Win- nacunnet stage. Often one will find a techie lurking in the shadows of the loft, or draped over a keyboard in the pit. Techies, at least the real ones, seem to be gluttons for punishment. When the going gets tough, they migrate to Pizza Hut and exchange stories of the stage 'til weird hours of the night. Have you hugged a techie today? (Have you seen one?) Techies 45 Below: Dracula (Scott Bowditch) shields himself from Professor Van Heusing's wolfbane. Right: The attendant (Mr. Charron) discusses the strange happenings with the maid (Jenny Banda). Middle right: Renfield (John Dodge) is definitely insane. Bottom right — When Ren- field gets out of hand it is the attendant's job to handle him. Feeling like a pain in the neck? Well, try telling that to this year's cast and crew of the dramatic pro- duction Dracula. This well-known story took form on the Winnacunnet stage with the help of some most unusual people. Those who weren't strange, well, they just didn't seem to fit in. In fact, the whole play was composed of some really interesting people. Scott Bowditch, in the title role, performed with his usual ex- travagancy. Supporting him were Erik Schmidt, Greg Capaldi, and Scott Snow as the fallible men of the stage who turned the tide against evil to good. Of course the vic- tim heroine was portrayed to ex- tremes by Mona Scrofano. In the framework of the play lurk- ed Jenny Banda in her first WHS pro- duction, and she made an excellent first impression. At the last minute, due to technical difficulties, Russ Charron (himself!) was called in to supply his rendition of the attendant, which he did remarkably. John Dodge, formerly the attendant, was assigned to per- form Renfield, a crazy sort of character, but then, he was only elaborating on his eccentric personality. All in all, the play went gruesome- ly well. In fact it might be said they all had a bloody good time. But remember, there are such things . . . Top: A frightened but courageous Dr. Seward (Erik Schmidt) wards off Dracula. Bottom: Weakened Lucy (Mona Scrofano) is comforted by her fiance Harker (Scott Snow), her father (Erik Schmidt), and her friend Van Heusing (Greg Capaldi). All these things would not be possible without Stu- dent Council. The Student Council is a dedicated group of students, one from each homeroom, who attend meetings in preparation for these events. Holding a position on the council enables one to take pride in himself, and his school. This year's council has been very successful. Homecoming this year had the biggest turnout since the tradition was started. Win- nacarnival — the challenge between the classes, was one of the best ever. Student Council 51 WOL ... LIVE IT! It's different that other classes and its fun, and we always have fun on the adventures . . . what a blast. WOL is a challenging and rewarding course. It not only challenges your body, but it challenges your mind, fun, excitement, healthy, athletic adventure, and everything else that school it not. Outdoor Learning was the best part of this school year, I learned a lot about the outdoors, wildlife, things that I had never experienced. Outdoor Learning is not just adven- tures, its a learning experience too. It is a fun class, relaxing and you can make some very close friends. WOL 53 What does Outdoor Learning Mean to You? From Rags to Riches The year of 1984 not only brought about the 25th celebra- tion of the school, but also the victory of the football team winning the Division II State Championship. The team came back from a 1 and 8 season in 1982 to a 10 and 1 season in 1983. This victory was not easy, for the team had practiced very hard. During the summer the football team practiced in double sessions. Coach Liporto commented that this year's team looked bet- ter in offense than it had in several years. He also said that they were a big play team; if the opponent made a mistake, we could really make them pay for it by gaining a lot of yards quickly. But much of this year's credit should go to Mr. Liporto and his fine coaching staff. Winnacunnet is proud of their in- credible success. Football Champs 57 A Celebration of Champions It is certainly appropriate that during Winnacunnet High School's 25th anniversary the girls soccer team brought its school its first state championship. A major factor to their success was the fact that they were a TEAM. Their unity was displayed on the field, as well as off the field. The girls demonstrated good sportsmanship, team coherence, and a lot of SPIRIT! Preceding the soccer season, the girls worked relentlessly during the hot humid days of August. The effort and spirit of the team showed even then, that they were determined to win. The girls' poise pulled them through two tough tour- nament games. In both games the team came from behind to beat the Oyster River Bobcats and the Steven's Lady Cardinals. Congratulations for an A WESOME season! When thinking about soccer, one imagines it as a sport of just kicking a ball into the goal. Easily said, but not done. The ball has to be skillfully controlled, pro- perly positioned and then precisely kicked into the goal. It is a game of flying feet, legs, and bodies, the head often being used to butt the ball. Using these same skills, this year's varsity soccer team had a record of five wins, five losses, and four ties. The highest scorer on this year's team was Bill Sturgis with five goals and three assists. Rob Buzzel was selected the most valuable player. Hard competition may have limited the number of winning games, but as Mr. Foote noted at the banquet, this team was one of the best he has ever coached and is looking forward to next year's returning veterans. Boys Soccer 65 Foot Fire This year's field hockey team may not have been as successful as previous seasons, but they know how to get psyched. One way was Foot Fire. A cheer led by the captains Gina Maher and Susan Ouelette. Susan Ouelette yelled Foot Fire and the team would quickly run in place, then Gina Maher yelled the number of wins they had experienced along with the game they would soon be play- ing. Then the team would again run in place, while repeating this number, and hitting their sticks on the ground as if they were at- tempting to get a loose ball. This season the girls experienced some losses, a few wins and ties, which no one enjoys. Coach French was not disappointed this year because she saw positive improvement and total team effort. The runners go miles out into the wilderness not knowing what to expect. Our cross country team, under the coaching of J. D. Mildrew for the second year, has established a reputation for quality. The runners are few in number, but when racing they always place well. This year's team closed the season with nine wins and seven losses. Battle Above The Nets! Under Miss Peterson's coaching for the second year, the volleyball team went through a period of reconstruction. Many new players were introduced to the difficult com- petition which required sharp reflexes and team coordina- tion. They had to learn the three major plays: “bumping, setting, and spiking. The players' interaction with one another, and the con- stant yell of the coach: talk it up, talk it up out there, helped maintain their spirit in spite of several upsets. With formative experiences of this past year behind them, our team can now look forward to a future winning season. Volleyball 73 Back Again Our Silver Anniversary year marks the triumphant return of the golf team to Winnacunnet. This short sea- soned sport brought about many outstanding results. In the state championships, our team placed sixth. Kevin Saunders and Pete Falcone were singled out for outstand- ing performances. Accuracy and form were the important keys to their success. Even though the W.H.S. team placed an impressive eleventh out of more than one hundred competitors, next year's team is looking forward to the 1984-1985 season. A Charging Season Following the coaching of Jack Ford, the War- rior boys basketball team came in from another beautiful season with the record of 15 wins and a mere 3 losses. The team had several experienced seniors leading them into their success. Highlights of the 83-84 season were Ken Car- roons' 1000 baskets and both Ken and Mark Joiner pulling in the top 10 Warrior all time high scorers. To close their season off, the successful Warrior tournament team awarded Mark Joiner M.V.P., Rob Buzzel the coaches award, Don Lamprey the sportsmanship award, and Doug Dahl the unsung Hero. Boys Basketball 79 1, Second to None The only word to describe this season is awesome. These talent filled girls along with their determined coach were disciplined and hard working. It all paid off, for they certainly were successful. They went on to lose only one game in their regular season, became the Class L State Champions and they now hold the title for the highest scoring game in tournament history. They came away with a 75-73 overtime victory against Nashua. Headed by Captains Paige Kishabugh and Dawn Peck, seniors Linda Nelson, Beth McDonald and Laura McGrail had the talent and experience along with lots of help from sophomore Debbie McCaddin. They were noted for their full-court defensive pressure, speed and their mastery of skills. Congratulations to Dawn Peck for scoring 1,000 + points as a Warrior, and to all team members on an ex- cellent season and the State Championship. The first advice we received was, Get involved. And that, we did. One of our first jobs was electing class officers. We performed this task suc- cessfully by electing Doug Dahl — President, Christie Daboul — Vice President, Donna Testa — Treasurer, Michele Schmidt — Secretary. Meanwhile, we had filtered into the various clubs and the fall sports program, which lead us to the first annual Homecoming. A disappoint- ing game brought us to an enchanting dance, themed The Beatles. The autumn breeze brought the winter winds and the new sports season. The girls freshmen hoop team had an undefeated season! The boys Varsity Basketball team went to UNH with all out support, only to suffer a disappointing yet noble loss. In the midst of winter sports ac- tion, Winnacarnival brought a new challenge. Our participation was outstanding — our score wasn't! In keeping with tradition we lost. We did however, manage to elect Maureen Randall our first Winnacarnival Princess. Soon the snow melted and Senioritis set in — but we were only Freshmen!!! The new sports season began and ended before we knew it. As the year drew to a close, we elected student council officers in an- ticipation of our sophomore year. The summer had flown by and September converged upon us. In our brave sophmoric manner we returned to WHS. Sports teams had been working hard since mid-August. Getting involved now included giving the freshmen wrong directions to classes and making a buck on elevator passes. Our class officers. President Christie Daboul, Vice Presidents: Ron Gallant, Michele Schmidt, and Donna Testa; Secretary Sarah Kelley, and Treasurer Beth Crawford were already working toward the 2nd Homecoming. The game on Halloween day was another disappointing loss, yet the evening was a smashing costume ball. The boys and girls soccer teams redeemed our pride by going to the quarter finals. Yet soon, winter returned with Winnacarnival on its wings. We com- pletely wiped out the Seniors in the first two days. From there, we fought for the gusto against the Juniors to place a close second. Tammy Falconer became our second princess. Spring returned and the great outdoors tempted everyone. Spring track, softball, and baseball players all found their way to the fields, while some of us snuck off to the Summer invaded final exams and we left for a 10 week break. 158 Class History Upperclassmen returned to WHS after that summer. This year we had a choice of our class English electives. The West Class, APUSH, Chemistry, Practical arts . . . We made some incredible elections with President Christie Daboul; V.P.'s: Ron Gallant and Paul Eaton, Secretary Sarah Kelley; and Treasurer Bryan Saunder. Along with our new electives came the painstaking PSAT's and SAT's. The first sports season of the year put many of us on our first varsity teams. It also brought the Powder Puff football game, which with a little dirt, a few bruises, and some hard feelings we lost to the seniors. Once again, the Homecoming game was a disaster, but the 2nd costume dance with a Mardi-Gras theme was a complete success. The girls' soccer team led a most suc- cessful season, losing respectably in the semi-finals. The Winnacarnival competition went in favor of the Seniors (who cheated) by one point as we came in sec- ond, with Sarah Price our princess. When Spring sprang, the Jr. Prom was in the air. On that magical night we crowned Sarah Price our queen; serving as the court were Amy Adams, Michele Blaisdell, Mary Cutshall, Brenda Downey, Trudy Gagne, and Lynn Grandmaison. Our theme was Open Arms by Journey. Shortly after the prom, the spring sports season wound down. Summer was glistening on the horizon. We took our last set of final exams and whole-heartedly hit the beach. Finally, it was September of our senior year. The WHS routine was quite familiar. We did not bother picking on freshmen. Our minds were on other things. Our grades improved for college applications and our sports teams were magnificent. Both the girls soccer team and our football team became state champs. Not only that, but the football team beat our rivals, Exeter, twice. This was our first Homecoming victory. The Silver Anniversary theme led our 3rd costume ball to a terrific night. Our Queen was Donna Testa and her court Amy Adams, Brenda Downey, Tammy Falconer, and Sarah Price. Along with the other fall sports returned a surprisingly triumphant golf team. With winter came more successful sports. On the 25th of Feburary the girls won the Basketball Cham- pionship at UNH. The boys promise to be in the tourna- ment. In addition to this, we incorporated a J.V. Hockey team. Winnacarnival was a smashing senior victory over the sophomores by 3 points. Our Queen was Christie Daboul and our King, Ken Corroon. Our senior class officers were President Christie Daboul, Vice President Donna Testa, Treasurer Pat Carey, and Secretary Michele Schmidt. As the year winds down, we the class of 1984, the 25th graduating class, promise to be remembered as a class who made a difference. 1 9 8 3 1 9 8 4 Class History 159 BEST POP ALBUMS 1. If it can be put off — it isn't worth doing in the first place. Contrary to popular belief, this practice is not intended to populate sanitoriums with teachers, advisors, and club presidents. Of course, there comes a time when even the most ex- perienced procrastinators must write, organize, study or (as dreaded as it seems) work. Surely, everyone can relate to at least one minor offense, like . .. . . . the homework you did while walking to class. . . . the last day of the term when you passed in the homework from the first week of it. . . . the test you studied for during lunch, or in history class. . . . the chapter you read on the bus Friday morning. . . . the test you studied for in the five minutes you bribed your teacher into allotting you before the test was handed out. . . . the one you studied for while passing the test back. . . . the notebook you organized during homeroom. . . . the paper you finished typing at 4:00 A.M. Tuesday that you stayed home Monday to write. . . . the vacation you spent researching the paper assigned to you six weeks before. . . . the Monarch Notes you started reading at 11:59 P.M. Thursday before Friday's test. . . . the extra-help session to understand last week's Algebra test. ... or, at very least, the Sunday night you spent doing the week-end's homework. What do you say we all give-up procrastinating — NEXT YEAR. 172 Juniors Joy Adams Wendy Anderson Craig Annis Robin Appleton Gary Arakelian Kenneth Archibald Robert Arndt s o p ii o o R Christine
