2 Dedication Too often, we take for granted the people who try to moke our school life o little better. There is o man, who constantly gives his time. He listens to students' concerns, as well as their joys, and puts endless hours into organizing and advising one of the most active clubs at Winnacunner. Yet, too often, we forget to say Thank You .. So, with great respect, we, the doss of Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Three, dedicate this year's Sachem to you, Mr. Devontery. We hope this demonstrates oil the appreciation and love we feel for you. We will never forget you, or your smile. r««r Editorial Staff Editor-in-Chief Stephanie Niejadlik Layout Editors Advertising Editor Barbara Krisko Jill Lemire Lori Meads Soles Manager Copy Editors Mary Bedell Betsy Lurvey Lori Dow Art Editor Editorial Assistants: Susan Caswell Roberta Martin Senior Editor Sarah Price Keri Schaake Janet Todd Sports Editor Beth Trembly Pam Trotman Stephanie Weinhold Terri Warren Student Life Editor John Pontbriand Clubs Editor Photography by: Kurt Sanders Maclean Stevens Studio: Kim Chin National School Studies Underclass Editor Mr. Randall Zito Michelle Ramprey Mr. Donald Vossberg Michael Baker Faculty Editor Jackie Dubrava Lisa Wiser Mary Beth Burns Publisher: Taylor Publishing Co. What is this amazing ability you seem to hove? You con interpret body language. Body language is one of the most important ports of o con- versation. You con tell if the per- son you ore speaking to is en- tranced by what you ore saying if they ore leaning over and looking directly or you. On the other hand you con get a hint that you might be getting on the boring side if the person you ore talking to begins to look off into space. Body language soys some things that we might nor hove the confidence to soy directly, whether it is o smile directed toward that special person, or a cold store in the opposite direction. Remember, body language tells o lor about you. If you are having trouble with your friends take o good look or your own body language. Maybe you ore sending messages you do nor wont to. 9 WILL YOU SCHOOL IS MORE THAN JUST STUDYING Question: Is there more to o student's life rhon studying? Answer: YES!!! A student’s life is filled with activities,- sports, clubs, and part-time jobs. If you just walk into o WHS locker room or 2:20, you'll find students shouting ot one another while rushing around to get ready for o gome. Extra-curricular activities ore in great number at WHS. Students may be working on banners for Homecoming, Yearbook staff busily working on secret projects. Newspaper staff discussing the assignments for the monthly edition, and the Dungeons ond Dragons club serring up for their gome. Almost everyone holds down o part-time job. Whether it is o cashier or o supermarket or o helper or o snock bor, WHS students ore hard ot work to earn the extra bucks needed for donees, movies ond sporting events. Though academics ore important, the extracurricular activities that students ore involved in abound in great number. Maybe o better question to be asked would be, Is there any rime in o student's life for sleep? As usual the SENIORS won by a score of 34-0, and we even played with impartial referees this year! Just goes to show who the BETTER class is. This year's Homecoming was finally something to celebrate about. The football team did not win. but they ployed their best gome of rhe season, against our Exeter rivals, no less. The crowds went wild at the game while rhe boys played their hearts our. We didn't win bur it was on awesome game. To top things off, the Homecoming dance wos held in the cofe on Saturday night. TECHIES A SURPRISE SEASON This years boys' soccer ream mode up of many experienced SENIORS, hod o hard season. The expectation of the players and Coach Foote was to end the season with o strong record of wins, and be able to advance to the State Tournament, os hod been ac- complished frequently in post years. However, the Warriors faced some excep- tionally rough and greatly improved teams this year. Nor due to o lock of effort on the players port, bur more to some hard luck. Hopefully next year's season will prove more successful. In respect to this years team, they hung in there, and gave it their best shot. Thanks for all your effort guys. This page. Boys Soccer 39 THE KICK-OFF This year's girls soccer team, under the leadership of Co-Caprains Jacki DuBrova and Nancy Labrie, just could nor be stopped!!! Ending with a season record of 12-3-1, they were eligible for the store tourna- ment for the third time in three years! For their first tournament gome they faced o strong Milford team, but managed to pull off o vic- tory. Due to the loss of four key players between the Milford gome and their second gome, the girls lost to Central High, and the loss ended their par- ticipation in the tournament. Even though they took a hard loss, the girls had a great season, and the hope for next year's team exceeds that predicted for this past team, according to Coach Ed Beattie. Girls Soccer 40 THE CONTINUAL STRUGGLE There were some grave disappointments to this years Warrior football team; with only one gome left before the end of the season, their record was 1-7. For the lost gome of the season, WHS was scheduled to play their traditional rival, EXETER! There didn't seem to be much hope for a Warrior win since Exeter hod o record of 7-1. However, os almost any fan that attended the gome could tell you, the WHS football ream did remarkably well. At the half, Winnacunner led the gome over Exeter, 18-14. During the second half of the gome, Exeter pulled ahead ond the gome ending score was EXETER-40: WHS-22: but even though that added another loss to their record, it was o gome well ployed. The Warrior Varsity has high hopes for next year, accord- ing to Coach Liporto. There were many Sophomores on this years team, who hod considerable ploying time ond hopefully experience will be beneficial to next years team. Top: Dove Drown breaks owoy from the Merrimac defense. The bond was full of talented, hard work- ing musicians who enjoyed working and ploying together. During the foil the bond worked hard practicing their half-time show. With the help of Drill Instructor, Mr. Connel- ly, and Bond Director, Mr. Bednorz, the bond put on many fine performances. During Christmas, the Warrior bond entertained neighboring towns with parades — the lost of which was on Memorial Day. The highlight of the year was the Exchange concert. This year the bond exchanged with the Loyalist Collegiate ond Vocational Institute in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. 76 Auwe, srr i ■'L Sro MUC- cevt r Opposire poge: Let's get if right rhe first rime you guys. For us, that day was to be the beginning of o long and exciting journey. When we entered, we hod dreams of offending football ond basketball gomes, parries, and actually getting our licenses! It was not long before we realized that os freshmen, we were low men on the totem pole, ond that meant being picked on endlessly. Although we were young, we were not stupid, ond so we learned fast never to osk anything from upperclassmen. We also got smart ond elected Jill Lemire os our president, Kristen Clark os our vice-president, Sue Lyon os our secretory, ond Jocki Dubrovo os our treasurer. Winnocornivol was o new experience for us, ond like oil new experiences, we didn't do too many things right. About the only right thing we did was to vote Pom Wallace os our princess; bur when it was over, we learned the unwritten rules of the gome, we vowed never to lose again. We come bock ogoin in the foil of 1980 os Sophomores. We soon forgot the trials of being freshmen ond joined in the rroidition of giving wrong directions to classes, ond wrong dotes to activities. We learned whor the sophomore slump was, ond nobody would understand how we could hove senioritis in our sophomore year. We started off the year well by electing Sue Lyon os our President, Kim Johnson — Vice-President, Eric Focey — Secretory, ond Jocki Dubrovo — Treasurer. Under the supervision of Lorraine Weimerskirch, Homecoming become o tradition, ond our first theme was the Beatles. When it come rime for Winnocornivol, we did not forget our promise ond we won! We even beor the seniors who panicked ond resorted to cheating. It become on all-around victory when we got to crown Deonno Dohl os queen. We returned the next foil os Juniors. There was o lor of activities lined up for us that year: Concession stands, PSAT'S, SAT'S, ond the PROM. We began the year by electing Sue Lyon our president, Keri Schooke ond Betsy Lurvey our vice presidents. Sue Meneghin our secretory, ond Jocki Dubrovo our treasurer. Although we lost our Homecoming gome to Milford, the costume donee with the rheme Halloween was o success. Winnocornivol come around in February ond again we won. The seniors were not too much of o threat, but the sophomores began to get the hong of it ond nearly grasped o victory out of our hands. The carnival was o success oil the way through to the donee we crowned Kristie Sewell queen. Throughout the junior year, our officers worked hard for one event — The PROM. It was o splendid donee ond o night everyone will remember. The court consisted of : Tiffany Curtis, Chris Campbell, Ellen Provost, Anne Allen, Mary Jacques, ond Kristie Sewell, along with our queen, Deonno Dohl. In the foil of 1982, we returned to Winnacunnet os SENIORS. We hod finally reached the top of the ladder, but now rhot we were there, did we reolly wont to leave? We began the year by electing Sue Lyon os President, Keri Schooke ond Sabino Lyden os Vice-presidents, Sue Meneghin os Secretory, ond Jocki Dubrovo os Treasurer. The beginning of the year wos long ond difficult os we searched for colleges ond rook the SAT'S one more rime to see if we could get a better score. After seeing two homecomings, we finally got to pick our court which consisted of: Tiffany Curtis, Alicia Welch, Lyndo Wosson, Kristie Sewell, Michelle Romprey, Sobino Lyden, ond queen Sue Fosberg. We hod o tough loss ogoinsf Exeter, bur the donee with its theme Mordi Gros, put the loss aside. We hove nor yet hod Winnocornivol, bur we will not forger our tradition of winning. We not only were o winning ream in Winnocornivol, but we were o winning class. A class that will nor soon be forgotten. As we move on, we look bock on our years in high school. Although there wos some sadness, there were mostly good rimes. With these memories, we will look forward ond continue the journey we starred four years ago. 136 doss history DO YOU REMEMBER . . . . . . your first day at WHS . . . your lost days at WHS? . . . picking through the garbage for Mr. Fernald? . . . the many industrial arts substitutes? . . . breaking tradition and winning Winnacarnival as Sophomores? . . . protesting the smoking area? . . . Silently, with cot- ton candy in hand, I passed many shouting barkers and open sideshows. Each exhibit featured something uniquely different. To my right a sign read Whizzo the three-legged yak ' I considered the possible excitement of viewing such an animal, but I remembered my disappointment as a child when watching Pol- ly the Wonder Budgie at a traveling parakeet circus. Ever since this traumatic experience, my imoge of sideshow animals has been shat- tered. Coldly I turned from the yak’s weathered tent and was astonished by the ap- pearance of a little man directly behind me. I asked him who he was. The small bearded man replied, Bob. He continued, I am The Unbelievable Bob, a magician by trade but a psychic by birth. I can tell you whatever you want to know life, life after life, and most im- portant of all, life after high school. I exclaimed, Life after high school? You're puttin' me on?” Bob grinned and gestured for me to follow him. We traveled to a nearby tent and went in- side. Bob pointed to a small table covered by a faded sheer. I sat at the table with the old man. In a flash, he uncovered the table and a crystal orb by removing the piece of dirty linen. The orb glowed and cast a worm light onto both of our faces. Bob then said, Now what is it that you wish to know? I, quite surprised, answered, What will the Winnacunnet High School class of 1983 be doing in the year 2000? Pointing to the orb Bob said, LOOK! and you shall see. The orb brightened and images rook shape before my very eyes. High atop Mount Everest. Mart Tilbury has im- paled a mountain goat quite accidentally with his ice axe. He calls to a climbing Russell Moulton for assistance bur desists when he views his companion explaining the situation to the victim's most enraged family. But Matt does nor fear for Russ's safety as he knows that in goats of all regions, boredom overcomes anger. Inside o Chicago computer firm Dan Kern has discovered the secret to success and attributes it to hard work and being mistaken for a lost computer genius named Ed. Don's secretary Ellen Provost has won Secretary of the Year for her fifth consecutive year in the company. Ellen attributes her accomplishment to unplug- gable telephones and the invention of the wastepaper basket. Hosting a late night talk show in the Big Ap- ple, Alan Reynolds hos discovered great fame and fortune at now top rated NBC. Tonight, Alan presents a show with a musical theme. Guests include soul men: Lee Vigent, Bob Nicholson, and Duane Lounsbury, and their band DownBear. Nightclub singer Chris Thom was scheduled to appear but he is being held captive by crazed fans atop the RCA building. Well, Chris did always want to be on top of the music industry. Phillip Barton hos finally accomplished his dream to improve the fuel efficiency of jumbo- jets and to rid the skies of tin foil dinner trays in the process. Phil has also established his own in- tercontinental airline called Air Heads Unlimited. He has employed the services of classmates Carla Barrasso, Georgina David, Bar- bara Krisko, and Betsy Richardson as flight at- tendants and Kenneth Sheffert as chief pilot. Phil asserts that his workers will uphold the fine name of his company. On an uncharted island in the Pacific, Robin Horrold is managing her own hotel resort. Foreign correspondent for the U.5., Nancy Acox, discovered the tropical paradise when her ship sank nearby. Captain Pam Dignam of the S.S. Unsinkable blames navigator Kelli Parkman for the accident os bubble gum has fused all maps into one nebulous glob. Mean- while, Robin finds business looking up as there is nor another ship due for months. 5an Diego is the location of Guzzler's Pub both owned and operated by Parry Lonergan and Trina Gingros. The girls' specialties are mainly comprised of low cost German im- ported ales. Frequenting their establishment are the likes of Sue Caswell and Lisa Wiser, L.A.'s greatest pop artists who hove made painting by numbers into a science. Other visitors include tennis pro Jon Clausen and his manager Danny Minutelli. Jon would have entered Wimbledon but he has always thought it was a tourney only for players with strange, often mispronounced, first names. Donna Abely, Kathy McCaddin, and Jeff Bed- narz have formed a jazz trio. They often work a nightclub owned by Jim French and Ed O'Brien called Hooligans in Boston. A third partner in the business, Ralph MacDonald, had to skip town to avoid collection of an overdue debt. Underworld Crime Bosses Tony Cosassa and Tom Dumont ore currently in pursuit of Ralph and are currently sizing him up for ce- ment shoes. 140 prophecy Chemicol engineers Peter Welch and John Marshall claim to have discovered on alternative automobile fuel in Detroit. They call the mystery fluid Whaleahol.” Environmentalists Tiffany Curtis and Sue Forsberg are attacking Pete and John os they claim that if is inhuman to kill off an endangered species just so we can have Chevetres. But Peter still embraces the discovery os he explains that “a car can get a full year of fuel from only 5 whale carcasses plus 38 mpg on the highway!” So far, Tiff and Sue plan to form a lynching party against the two. The Atlanta based law firm of Martinen, Carlson, Arguin, Dubravo, Stevens, and Woods is currently abounding in turmoil. Stu, Sue, Amy, Jocki, Sharon, and Steve cannot seem to fit all of their names on their of- fice door. All are corporate lawyers and all want the same office. Stu, Sue, and Sharon considered to save space by moving the coffee machine. Steve and Amy believe that smaller desks and shorter clients will solve the problem. But Jacki, fearing inevitable separation, saved the firm by raking out a loan from Loon Schoake United, a huge investing conglomerate ident on the West Coast. Old friends from Winnacunner, Jacki and Keri, president of the corporation, met ond serried a $60,000 loan at a low 49% interest for office renovation. All were pleased with the deal except for Steve, who wishes he was of DuPont. In Boston television are Sue Lyon ond Lori Meads who co-onchor the News Center Five editions or six ond eleven. Also at the station ore Troy Bishop, Tom Brown, ond Todd Conont who try to present entertain- ing forecasts. Recently they predicted the block plague and general pestilence for the suburbs ond coastal regions. The biggest laugh they got was from station manager Eric Facey, who enjoyed giving them a substantial cur in salary. Covering the sports highlights ore Mike Donovan and Hugh Linnehan. The only problem here is that both Mike and Hugh refuse to cover inter-collegiore cafeteria foodfighrs, a sporting event favorite to Eric. Famous photographer John Skip” Newell has taken a trip to Europe to snap shots of a philosophical retreat in Rome. John Ponrbriond, returning to his toga, has taken up as an instructor there. John reaches the sacred ideals of Plato, ond the religious aspects of automechanics to the likes of students Dana Reynolds, Darryl Rahn, and Joe Deslisle. Skip has photographed John in most pious moments of consciousness over the afterlife and the expected life of motor oil; and he says he can'r waif to get back home so that he can bring his film to Fotomat. In Vegas many 1983 graduates have found great fortune. Wayne Sowers, and Darren Soldati are rich gamblers who have depleted every casino of its sup- ply of blue chips. Kristie Sewell, Trish Fliss, and Sabina Lyden have become showgirls who have earned PHD's by day. And Patrick Woolsey, the oil tycoon, hos bought up most the city. Still in Hampton are Hilori Wolstat and Kathy Dow who ore partner psychologists on Park Avenue. Still at Winnacunner is Lorraine Weimerskirch who is busy building a complete auditorium where the school cafeteria was. Who needs school lunches anyway? I don't know?”, I thought to myself. Bob again shrouded the crystal orb ond asked me for fifty cents for the show. I handed him the money and in o state of dreaming I left the dingy rent. Still amazed by what the crystal showed me, I wandered along the midway thinking about the prophecy ond how it probably bear the yak show for sensationalism hands down. prophecy 141 Bruce Acox Amy Certain- ly o veteran, he taught nine years at Hampton Academy when it was the high school. For the lost twenty-five yeors, he hos taught here at WHS. In 1938, Mr. Bushold moved to the seacoost because it was a ’ good communi- ty . He hos remained for the some reason. Working with young people was the most rewording port of his professional career. He soys he hos seen the school change over the yeors. Because of its size, teachers don't seem to be able to hove the some close relationship with their students, he added. However, he admits that students, today, hove many more opportunities. Mr. Bushold hopes that Winnocunner will continue to stay one step ahead of the other schools in the seacoost areas. 179 Leonord Abrohomson Indusrriol Arts Joyce Ballou Business Education Poulo Banda English Sreven Bauer Science Leonord Borron Social Studies Dovid Bennett Moth Edword Beattie Social Studies 180 faculty Timothy Bonsoint Social Studies Rosorio Chorron Social Studies Dr. Robert Brown Psychologist Alon Bushold English Susan Colef Special Education Phyllis Coss Science Moureen Cullen English Borboro Doly Secretory Robert Devontry Moth John Ford English Theresa Gront Speciol Educotion Lucy Hiller Foreign Language Leslie Dollemon Speciol Educotion Marilyn French Physical Educotion Thomos Hoggerty English John Dover Guidance Richard Gogne Science John Harris Science Kevin Fleming Social Studies Stephen Goulin Industrial Arts Marjorie Henderson Secretory Sherrie Hoyt Simonne Hoyt Morgoret Jocobellis Social Studies Secretory Business Educotion Donald Foote Physical Education Ruth Goodwin Secretory Jeon Hermann Librarian William Kenney Driver Educotion foculty 161 Morie Kennedy Physicol Educotion John Lodge Moth Borboro Kinsmon Guidonce Robert Luisi Moth Richord Lodd Science L.
