HOMECOMING 81 Halloween. Just that one word conjures up images of sleek black cats, witches leaning over cauldrons, and little kids screaming through the streets, unrecognizable in their costumes. For us at Winnacunnet, however, Halloween took on a new meaning, for it was on this day that the second annual WHS Homecoming was held. The day dawned and soon the Winnacunnet parking lot was filled with screaming youngsters and somewhat serene high school students organizing themselves for the big homecoming parade, in which Brenda Byrne, the 1980 queen, participated with the nominees for this year's court. Also showcased was the senior class float, or Deathmobile. Run- ning under the theme No one here gets out alive,” it certainly looked the part. Our football team ran into some hard luck at this year's game, and was defeated by Milford. Being the enthusiastic, energetic people we are, we weren't discouraged by this turn of events and anxiously looked forward to the evening's activities. The cafe that night did not look like itself. Somehow during the previous 24 hours it had been transformed into a haunted house, complete with ghosts, goblins, and gravestones. The guests who arrived at the dance that night were completely changed as well; normal American high school students came instead as a bag of jellybeans, a flapper, the Lone Ranger, a Playboy Bunny, the Blues Brothers, a priest and a pregnant nun. Highlighting the festivities was the crowning of Queen Missy Williams and King Mike Donohoe. The atmosphere that night was outrageous and cer- tainly Homecoming 81 will be remembered for a long time to come. Right: Karen Rowe and Kerry Hamilton show lots of spirit at the pep rally by really painting themselves up. 22 spirit week Spirit 1 ... 2 ... 3 and 4 Spirits soared during the week before the big Milford game, and for good reason. Why? Spirit Week!! Highlighting the activity, organized by the Student Coun- cil, were theme days. At this time the student body ap- peared throughout the school in a variety of outlandish costumes: hats and sunglasses, warrior paint, T-shirts and jeans, and togas. Water pistol-toting hunters playing The Most Dangerous Game lurked in the corridors tracking down their prey. Climaxing the week was Friday’s pep ral- ly. A few football players showed some spirit by par- ticipating in the bugaloo cheer and in a variation of musical chairs. Concluding the rally was a pie throw. The lucky recipient of a cream pie in the face was chosen by raffle and, in a tight race, turned out to be Mr. Beattie. Who says Winnacunnet has no spirit?
