A Part of Us E Things have a way of changing from one year to the next. Styles in music and clothing, personalities and trendsetters, fads in any category — nothing can be depended on. Here's a list of fads and fashions that came and went in 1982. O ■ Mi First, let it be said that punk was never in, while rock-n-roll was never out. REO Speedwagon started the year in, but have been replaced by an all-girl band, the Go-Go's. Sold out crowds across the country proved that the Rolling Stones never went out, while most of New York Filled Central Park to welcome Simon and Garfunkel back in. In radio stations. WOOZ is fading, while BOS is on the rise. In equipment, cassette boxes replaced 8-tracks, which in turn were topped by the Sony Walkman. Let it be known that Raiders of the Lost Ark, On Golden Pond, Chariots of Fire and Arthur are the movies of the year. Commercial television is out; music and cable television are in. In case you haven't realized what Sports Illustrated has, Cheryl Tiegs is out; Christie Brinkley is in. Suzanne Somers and John Travolta have left the scene for good, replaced by Victoria Principal and Timothy Hutton. On the daytime scene. Laura Webber Baldwin Spencer may be out of Luke's heart, while Jackie Templeton could be in. In the world of sports, the Oakland Raiders and the Montreal Canadiens are out; the San Francisco 49ers and the Edmonton Oilers are in. In Boston, the Celts and the Sox arc never out! When considering per- sonalities, Jim Rice, Roberto Duran, and Ingemar Sten- mark are out; Carney Lansford, Sugar Ray Leonard, and Phil Mahre are in — and champions in their own right. The prep look is still in, but falling out fast, however LL Beans and Bass are here to stay. The fashion news for 1981-82 was highlighted by the classic look: skirts of wool and corduroy, tweed blazers, sweaters in all styles, high necked blouses, and, the newest craze, knickers. The shoes for the new look included loafers and flats for casual wear, and pumps for dress. In sportswear, athletic T-shirts and alligator sweaters are out; rock con- cert T-shirts and college sweatshirts are in. Despite Brooke Shields. Calvin Klein jeans are out, while Lee's and Levi's are making comebacks. In the comic strip genre. Peanuts and Doonesbury are out; Garfield and Bloom County arc in. The Preppy Handbook is way, way out! The newest in reading materials are Delia Ephron's Teenage Romance and 101 Uses for a Dead Cat. Munch time! In general, the White House china, living together. Space Invaders, Luke and Laura, and store bought cookies arc all out, while Royal Weddings, Pac Man, Charles and Di, and Toll-House cookies are in. Politically, Congress hasn't yet decided if President Reagan's budget will be in or out. Today we are in, tomorrow we will finally be out. But what of the future? 12 Anwar Sadat. 62. Take a Walk on the Wild Side The cafeteria: a place to gorge, socialize, and be squeezed together as tightly as sar- dines in a can. Rumor has it that there are plenty of places to sit and eat if you do not mind the floor or your lap. But seriously folks, despite all the comments about institutional'’ food, extremely long lunch lines, and the lack of seats, the cafe isn’t that bad. More relationships have blossomed, more homework has been shared, and more gossip has been spread over a tray of scrambled hamburg in the cafe than in any other place in the school. It's no wonder, considering how much time is spent there. By your senior year, you’ve spent at least 32,400 minutes (540 hours) lounging over gouged linoleum. Traditions die hard in the cafeteria. For ex- ample, the three senior tables (the ones in the front surrounded by at least one hundred chairs) have been reserved for seniors since the dawn of time. Cutting into the snack bar line is as accepted as freshman garbology students peering into barrels, food fights, and trash scattered over the floor. Some students avoid the cafeteria like the plague, instead skipping lunch and seeking solace in an empty classroom. They insist it’s a war zone in there and perhaps they’re right. However, you haven’t lived until you’ve taken a walk on the wild side.
