His indomitable spirit shall not be soon forgotten. After all, how can we forget a man who has publicly suffered the indignities of water-dousing, cream pie-throwing, and pig-kissing? Mr. Bamford, we know that things don t always run smoothly between us. However, we recognize the affection you hold for us and the enthusiasm that you bring to your job every day of the year. This book is dedicated to you, Mr. Bamford, as a small token of our respect and deep admiration. 2 CREDITS EDITORS IN CHIEF Heather Jacqueline Corbett Corcoran Business Manager Tina Gray Art Editor Sports Editor Karen Eastman Tracy Kenison Clubs Editor Student Life Bill Twomey Editor Lauri Heroux Faculty Editor Underclass Kathy Chabot Editor Barbara Krisko Senior Editors Photography Sherry Scott Editor Kathie Fothergill Marty Durham Sales and Advertising Ken Chin Forrest Snowden Freshmen Typists Stephanie Niejadlik Tracie Sophomores Callihan Holly Whitfield Gerda Chase Juniors Robin Reffitt Lori Meads Kathy Riley Photographers Special Thanks to Mark Aldrich Our Advisor, Jeff Lefebvre Mr. Randall Zito. The sound jolts you out of bed. In a vir- tual state of shock, you hit the alarm and then gaze sleepily at the illuminated numerals. Six a.m.!! Why in the world? . . . and then you remember — today is the first day of a brand new school year. Oh thrills! For upperclassmen, the first day of school is on- ly the beginning of a dull, repetitious routine that they had followed at least once before. A shortened schedule allows only enough time for teachers to take attendance, so the day virtually evolves into one big gossip session. Students in- evitably meet in the cafeteria, relate their course schedules ( Ugh! You have her? Good luck kid! ), and find out which relationships had broken off and how many new ones had been formed over the summer. The one advantage to the abbreviated day is that it permits the upperclassmen to watch the stream of freshmen roll through the main doors. Though sometimes the looks of fear and anxiety on the faces of the rookies” are hilarious, more often than not they transport you to the day when you, too, were totally disorganized and disoriented. No matter how dull the day, going back to school allows you to rekindle all the old friend- ships you had forsaken for the freedom of sum- mer. Even though no one looks forward to it, returning to high school, it's a not so bad.” Upper Right: Christie Daboul realizes she must find her schedule before she can find her class. Opposite Page: When she didn't show up for homeroom, we ventured to Sherry Scott's house and found her trying to come back to life” with a Monday morning cup of coffee. 8 mondaze MONDAZE Good Monday Boston! It’s 6:15, time to wake up and rock with the J. Geils Band! Everyone knows the feeling, jolted out of a deep sleep (or perhaps an appetizing dream) by an overly cheerful radio personality who obviously has never felt the Monday morning blahs. The first glimpse of yourself in the mirror that morning makes you cringe — definitely too much partying and not enough sleep this weekend. That hair, those circles — quick! Get to a shower fast! School in this condition is no treat. All you want to do is sleep through homeroom but your neighbor, who only wants to talk about the latest love in her life, and friendly E. Hawley’s voice over the inter- com makes this virtually impossible. You proceed to your first class in search of peace, which is nowhere to be found. However, after being jostled through the halls by grinners, smilers, and laughers for three straight periods, your grim exterior begins to crack. The eyes shine, a kind word escapes your lips, a giggle erupts into laughter and, suddenly, Monday isn’t so bad. Just think, only four days till Friday! Interstate Hallways This is metro traffic control reporting from Winna- cunnet High School at 7:40 am. If you expect to get to class on time this morning, don't, for major jams have developed throughout the campus. A sulfur bomb ex- ploded in the front foyer earlier today. That area is closed for repairs and a detour has been established through Mr. Zito's room. Two enamoured sophomores have barricaded themselves in front of the library doors, causing a bit of a tie-up in that district. Unit sixteen has reported that the stairs near the faculty lounge and room 21 are backed up both north and southbound due to a small clique of junior girls chatting over the me- dian. Finally, a clumsy freshman has slowed traffic con- siderably by littering the floor with his books between the firedoors near the Math-English wing. No problems have been reported in the gym area so those who have first period phys. ed. should have no trouble getting to class. All other routes now have clear sailing as well. This is the metro control — have a good day.” 1 Opposite: Mark Aldrich on his way down the stairs to math. Upper Left: The English wing between classes. Styles in music and clothing, personalities and trendsetters, fads in any category — nothing can be depended on. Here's a list of fads and fashions that came and went in 1982. O ■ Mi First, let it be said that punk was never in, while rock-n-roll was never out. REO Speedwagon started the year in, but have been replaced by an all-girl band, the Go-Go's. Sold out crowds across the country proved that the Rolling Stones never went out, while most of New York Filled Central Park to welcome Simon and Garfunkel back in. In radio stations. WOOZ is fading, while BOS is on the rise. In equipment, cassette boxes replaced 8-tracks, which in turn were topped by the Sony Walkman. Let it be known that Raiders of the Lost Ark, On Golden Pond, Chariots of Fire and Arthur are the movies of the year. Commercial television is out; music and cable television are in. In case you haven't realized what Sports Illustrated has, Cheryl Tiegs is out; Christie Brinkley is in. Suzanne Somers and John Travolta have left the scene for good, replaced by Victoria Principal and Timothy Hutton. On the daytime scene. Laura Webber Baldwin Spencer may be out of Luke's heart, while Jackie Templeton could be in. In the world of sports, the Oakland Raiders and the Montreal Canadiens are out; the San Francisco 49ers and the Edmonton Oilers are in. In Boston, the Celts and the Sox arc never out! When considering per- sonalities, Jim Rice, Roberto Duran, and Ingemar Sten- mark are out; Carney Lansford, Sugar Ray Leonard, and Phil Mahre are in — and champions in their own right. The prep look is still in, but falling out fast, however LL Beans and Bass are here to stay. The fashion news for 1981-82 was highlighted by the classic look: skirts of wool and corduroy, tweed blazers, sweaters in all styles, high necked blouses, and, the newest craze, knickers. The shoes for the new look included loafers and flats for casual wear, and pumps for dress. In sportswear, athletic T-shirts and alligator sweaters are out; rock con- cert T-shirts and college sweatshirts are in. Despite Brooke Shields. Calvin Klein jeans are out, while Lee's and Levi's are making comebacks. In the comic strip genre. Peanuts and Doonesbury are out; Garfield and Bloom County arc in. The Preppy Handbook is way, way out! The newest in reading materials are Delia Ephron's Teenage Romance and 101 Uses for a Dead Cat. Munch time! Fast foods and for- mal dining are out; Chinese food and natural home cooking are in. A trip to Quincy Market always brings a smile. Friendly's after dances has ALWAYS been out. In general, the White House china, living together. Space Invaders, Luke and Laura, and store bought cookies arc all out, while Royal Weddings, Pac Man, Charles and Di, and Toll-House cookies are in. Politically, Congress hasn't yet decided if President Reagan's budget will be in or out. Today we are in, tomorrow we will finally be out. But what of the future? 12 Anwar Sadat. 62. Rumor has it that there are plenty of places to sit and eat if you do not mind the floor or your lap. But seriously folks, despite all the comments about institutional'’ food, extremely long lunch lines, and the lack of seats, the cafe isn’t that bad. More relationships have blossomed, more homework has been shared, and more gossip has been spread over a tray of scrambled hamburg in the cafe than in any other place in the school. It's no wonder, considering how much time is spent there. By your senior year, you’ve spent at least 32,400 minutes (540 hours) lounging over gouged linoleum. Traditions die hard in the cafeteria. For ex- ample, the three senior tables (the ones in the front surrounded by at least one hundred chairs) have been reserved for seniors since the dawn of time. Cutting into the snack bar line is as accepted as freshman garbology students peering into barrels, food fights, and trash scattered over the floor. Some students avoid the cafeteria like the plague, instead skipping lunch and seeking solace in an empty classroom. They insist it’s a war zone in there and perhaps they’re right. However, you haven’t lived until you’ve taken a walk on the wild side. The Working Class While some members of the Winnacunnet community involve themselves in one or more of the school’s extra- curricular activities, others choose a different course and participate instead in a variety of off-campus jobs. And still others find the energy to juggle school work, extra- curricular activities, and part-time work. Many people have different reasons for seeking employ- ment. Probably the most common reason is money: money for fun, money for clothes, money for college. To- day's high prices combined with the standard of living all students expect to live by, it's no wonder so many of us hold part-time jobs. We need to just to survive. Other benefits that are found in a job are experience and personal satisfaction. A job can teach you a lot of valuable lessons about life in the full-time working world. It also pays to have a job you enjoy, for unhappy working conditions can lead to unhappy conditions elsewhere. The jobs people have are extremely varied, ranging from bus person to dance instructor, from shoe sales- person to the ever popular cashier and or shelfstocker. Have you ever noticed the circumstances in which you study, if and when you ever crack the books? Winnacunnet’s roving photographers have, and some of the conditions were astounding. The days of sitting at a kitchen table covered with text books are gone. Most of you, it seems, prefer to finish any homework you may have before you board the bus for home. An empty classroom or the library have the perfect atmosphere for some, yet others prefer the noisy, crowded companionship of the cafeteria. WCOZ provides the enter- tainment for those of us who haunt the yearbook room. Still others seem to enjoy ... the graveyard? There are a number of students in WHS who are chronic procrastinators and put off doing any work until it’s absolutely necessary. For them, those few precious minutes of homeroom provide the ideal conditions for completing homework-in-a-hurry.” Admit it, guys, how many of you have felt THAT before? Just that one word conjures up images of sleek black cats, witches leaning over cauldrons, and little kids screaming through the streets, unrecognizable in their costumes. For us at Winnacunnet, however, Halloween took on a new meaning, for it was on this day that the second annual WHS Homecoming was held. The day dawned and soon the Winnacunnet parking lot was filled with screaming youngsters and somewhat serene high school students organizing themselves for the big homecoming parade, in which Brenda Byrne, the 1980 queen, participated with the nominees for this year's court. Also showcased was the senior class float, or Deathmobile. Run- ning under the theme No one here gets out alive,” it certainly looked the part. Our football team ran into some hard luck at this year's game, and was defeated by Milford. Being the enthusiastic, energetic people we are, we weren't discouraged by this turn of events and anxiously looked forward to the evening's activities. The cafe that night did not look like itself. Somehow during the previous 24 hours it had been transformed into a haunted house, complete with ghosts, goblins, and gravestones. The guests who arrived at the dance that night were completely changed as well; normal American high school students came instead as a bag of jellybeans, a flapper, the Lone Ranger, a Playboy Bunny, the Blues Brothers, a priest and a pregnant nun. Highlighting the festivities was the crowning of Queen Missy Williams and King Mike Donohoe. The atmosphere that night was outrageous and cer- tainly Homecoming 81 will be remembered for a long time to come. Why? Spirit Week!! Highlighting the activity, organized by the Student Coun- cil, were theme days. At this time the student body ap- peared throughout the school in a variety of outlandish costumes: hats and sunglasses, warrior paint, T-shirts and jeans, and togas. Water pistol-toting hunters playing The Most Dangerous Game lurked in the corridors tracking down their prey. Climaxing the week was Friday’s pep ral- ly. A few football players showed some spirit by par- ticipating in the bugaloo cheer and in a variation of musical chairs. Concluding the rally was a pie throw. The lucky recipient of a cream pie in the face was chosen by raffle and, in a tight race, turned out to be Mr. Beattie. Who says Winnacunnet has no spirit? Bottom: Jo Robinson trying to break through the Junior class defense. Not for Men Only! Anyone who thinks girls can't play football didn’t see this year’s powder puff contest which pitted the juniors against the seniors in a rough-and-tumble game of tackle. Despite a sloppy first half, highlighted by an intense fistfight, and the usual junior gripes of senior cheating, the seniors prevailed, 32-24. Outstanding performances were turned in by Carolyn Cumming and Suzy Lemire, who shared the scoring of the four senior touchdowns. Credit must be given to the juniors, however. Coached by Jeff Copp, John Croteau, Eric Facey, and Hugh Linnehan, and captained by Jeanne Trumbull and Lisa Fernald, they played a tough, aggressive game and should be unbeatable next year. The seniors would like to thank their coaches, Tom Biron, Steve Bosinger, Mike Lindley, Rob Lippe, and Larry Lonergan for turning an incredibly disorganized group of girls into an awesome football team. Harvey, directed by Tom Haggerty and assisted by Lorraine Weimerskirch, is the story of Elwood P. Dowd, convincingly portrayed by Alan Reynolds. Dowd is a 47 year old bachelor with dignified bearing and yet a dreamy expression in his eyes.” He has a Pooka — a 6 foot 1 inch rabbit named Harvey that only he sees and talks with. Dowd’s sister, Veta Louise Sim- mons, played by the dynamic Deidre Randall, tries to commit him to Chumley's Rest, a private sanitarium, and it is this conflict on which much of the story is based. Those who saw Harvey viewed masterful per- formances from all the players: Penny Seamons as Myr- tle Mae Simmons, Helen Newell as Miss Johnson, Mary Beth Chabot as Ethel Chauvenet, Mary Cutshall as Ruth Kelly, RN, John Dodge as Lyman Sanderson, Chris Thom as William Chumley, Tom Rallis as Judge Omar Gaffney, and Roland Lemire, a cab driver who at the play’s conclusion delivers the 'moral' of the story — who’s sane and who’s not. In what is traditionally a senior-dominated event, the sophomores and juniors fought neck and neck from day one. The outcome wasn't deter- mined until the final event when Darren Soldati destroyed his competitors in the pie-eating con- test, giving the juniors a two-point victory. The senior class never quite got a grip on things, although they were in the running much of the week. However, they had only one team in the finals of the gym events and, though they emerged victorious in both boys’ basketball and foul shooting, the athletic prowess and deter- mination of the underclassmen prevailed. The lead seesawed Saturday as the junior guys won floor hockey followed by a sophomore victory in girls event. The sophomores led by the 2-goal performance on Nick Paarlberg, then defeated the juniors in boys' soccer, despite the efforts of goalie Larry Douglas. The junior girls countered with a clutch sudden death shootout victory over the sophomores in the girls version (Marybeth Burns getting the game-winner), bringing the final outcome of the competition down to the pie-eating, where the juniors prevailed. The freshmen were last as usual; a Winna- carnival tradition that probably will never die. They did manage to pick up a few firsts among their string of zeroes, notably in the girls tug-o- war and snow sculpture. Despite their meager 84-point performance this year, they’ll be a threat in years to come. The week-long festivities were high-lighted by Saturday's dance and the crowning of queen Kristie Sewell with Joanne Nelson, Tammi Falconer, and Marilyn Minko as her princesses. Well, at least no one can say that anymore! This year we are extremely fortunate to have a brand new industrial arts building. On September 8, 1981, the building was dedicated to Florence D. Haley, school district clerk from 1957 to 1980, who had believed very much in the Cooperative School District and the students from the four communities. The new program not only includes basic courses in industrial arts, but also courses in energy, power, and transportation; communications technology; and materials and processing. Richard Nye, chairman of the industrial arts department, hopes to make our program the best in the state. STRIDI RIGHT The boys Cross Country team, led by co-captains Tim McConnell and Rob Hinkle and seniors Kevin Harrington and Rich Hinkle, had an exceptionally good year, finishing the regular season with a record of 49-2. The boys had a great showing at the Manchester Invita- tional, taking first and second places in- dividually and first place as a team. They did just as well at the Warrior In- vitational by individually placing first, second, and third and first as a team. They started strong, taking the first three places in the meets against rivals Concord, Pinkerton, Bishop Guerten and Salem. Injuries and other mishaps later in the year made it impossible for the team to finish as well as expected. Losing McConnell, Hinkle, Harrington, Hinkle, and Bill Coffey, next year’s team will have their work cut out for them. The girls had five runners enabling them to score as a team for the first time in years. Led by co-captains Liz Glavin and Tammy Perkins, the girls did well at the Class Meet and also at the Warrior Invitational, placing third as a team. Being a young team, the girls show much promise for the future. Chris Fogwell, Scott MacKinnon, Rich Hinkle, Joe Dunnack, Rob Hinkle, Peter Welsh, Tim McConnell, Kevin Harrington, and Skip Newell. Cap- tained by Tracey Jankauskas and Suzy Lemire, the girls battled both their op- ponents and the elements to an 8-5-1 record, fourth best in Winnacunnet history, only to miss a tournament berth by one place. It is said that measuring the amount of team spirit can determine the squad’s level of achievement. If that's the case, the Warriors deserved to be state champs. This year’s in things to do” were wearing french braids and jam- ming to AC DC before games in order to obtain a certain psyche quotient. Talent and experience were impor- tant aspects of this season’s fine record. Patti Cassin returned to record five shut-outs in goal while the front line of Lemire, Jacqui Corcoran, Jill Remick, and Anne Hackett has been together since junior high. Most Valuable Players were Kerry Keenan and Remick who led the team with sixteen goals. Named to the All-Seacoast squad were Remick, Keenan, Jeanne Trumbull, and Debbie Gaulin. The entire starting backfield was lost to injuries which resulted in the necessity to play many less experienced underclassmen throughout the season. Despite this, the team was able to go on and win two games, both of which were shutouts over Timberlane and Mer- rimack. Even though the team will lose quite a few players to gradua- tion, the fact that many underclassmen got a lot of playing time should help the team improve their record and qualify for the play- offs next season. Big Bad Blue Machine When asked about his team’s worst break of the season, Coach Foote im- mediately responded, John Marshall’s leg, Rob Buzzell’s finger and Jeff Mills’ arm. Despite these, and various other injuries to key players over the course of the season, the boys varsity soccer team still managed to make the state tournament for the sixth straight time. Highlighting the team’s efforts were two crucial victories over perennial soc- cer powers Pinkerton and Oyster River, handing each of them their only losses of the regular season. Foote mentioned that these were the best bunch of players he has ever been associated with, having received ex- cellent effort and dedication from everyone. With a number of talented underclassmen having received con- siderable varsity playing time, WHS can look forward to many more outstand- ing seasons. Led by co-captains Sue McGuinness and Jacki Dubrava, the girls were a dominant force in every game they played. One of the keys to their success was their depth, their strength at virtually every position, especially on the defense. There, goalkeeper Nancy Labrie allowed an average of only .571 goals per game. The girls finished the season at 9-2-3 and made the tournament for the second year in a row, only to be defeated by Central 1-0 in a shoot-out. At the annual soccer banquet, fullback Beth MacDonald was named MVP while Brenda Downey was Most Improved. WHS players on the All-Seacoast squad were McGuinness, Labrie, MacDonald, Paige Kishbaugh, Dawn Peck, and Jackie Neff. With only two seniors graduating from the squad, next year's team should be equally as strong, if not stronger. A state cham- pionship could be in the making. They were a young squad, mostly sophomores, and lacking in both size and experience. At the start of the season, they set a goal for themselves: to make the Class I. tournament. Many fans didn't think it could be done, but the guys made believers out of those skeptics, paving a road to tourney out of hustle and heart. This team will be remembered for its ability to overcome hardships. Practically every player had at least one side-lining injury or illness, but they always came back to con- tribute. The team's never say die” attitude helped them knock off two strong opponents, Dover and Portsmouth, in overtime thrillers (the victory over Dover was the first in 10 years!!). The loss of co-captain Skip Fairhurst would have ended the season for a team of less character, but the Warriors just wouldn't quit. Though they certainly missed Skip, as the 3-7 record without him shows, his absence was helpful in that it allowed other members of the team gain valuable varsity experience. The highlight of this transition period was the emergence of Ken Corroon, a 6'3 sophomore who was probably the best sixth man in the state. Other valuable underclassmen included junior co-captain Hugh Linnehan, sophomores Mark Joiner, Don Lamprey, and Rob Buzzell (other centers may tower over him but, man, can he sky!!), and freshman Todd Bamford. Their youth was supplemented by the leader- ship of MVP Fairhurst and seniors Andy Kelson and Larry Lonergan. Of course, there were some memorable moments off the court, too: how many plus plays did I have ... are we stopping at McDonald's . . . Larry, love that hat . . . Doctor K!!!... the Brian Beaulieu fan club ... roses are red, violets are blue, Franzoso's a — ... and a kid that looks like Kevin McHale!! The major factor of this team was that it was a team — an unselfish, hard-working unit that endured no matter what. There’s a saying that youth will be served. Well, watch out for the WHS youth, because next year they'll be unbeatable!! 58 Top Left: Ken Corroon takes a shot against an Ex- eter opponent. Right: Todd Bamford drops in two for the Warriors. In advancing to the quarter-finals of the tournament, they avenged two regular season losses to Portsmouth by topping the Clippers in a preliminary-round thriller, 63-62 before falling to a strong Dover squad. The girls were led by co-captains Kerry Keenan and Kelly Merrill. Their leadership proved to be one of the biggest strengths of this season’s squad (though an injury to Kerry’s knee kept her out of action for a few weeks), while inexperience was the biggest weakness. Four sophomores, Laura McGrail, Nancy Labrie, Dawn Peck, and Paige Kishbaugh, received considerable playing time, the last three being key factors to Coach Ed Beattie’s three-guard offense. All of the younger players performed very well for the amount of pressure put on them. Leading scorer on the team was Kelly Merrill with 216 points. Kelly was the team’s iron man,” playing in all twenty games for the Warriors. She was fourth in rebounds with 98 and voted a very deserving MVP besides. Yes, once again the hockey season has come to a close with the warrior skaters giving themselves a fairly good show- ing. To some who followed the season only by scores it might have seemed more a let down with a six win, eleven loss, and one tie record; but to others who watched the team, it was a building and testing year. This year saw the team starting with a predominantly freshman and sophomore lineup with only six seniors and many were unsure just how the season would go as the team lost two of its senior defensemen, Mike Schultz and Fred Schaake. As the season progressed, however, a strong defense based on Tom Biron, senior net-minder and captain, proved itself time and again. The offense was also comprised of young team members and although they had the shots they couldn’t seem to find the net. Basically it was a problem of inex- periece among the younger members but combined with this year's building experience, the outlook for next year is a strong and upcoming hockey team. As a final note, by request of the members of the team, we would like to add a special thanks to Scott Standen who managed the team and kept the books as well. Led by senior tri- captains Rob Hinkle, Rich Hinkle, and Tim McConnell, the guys were always in the running for second or third in the class, state, and Tri-State meets. Highlighting the season were the record performances by participants in the shot put and long distance events. Tim Mc- Connell set a new state record in the 600 meters with a time of 1:25.7. Kevin Mills was undefeated in the shot put, set a new school indoor record of 52 feet, and was named NH winter track all-star. MVP Rob Hinkle also set a new state record, this in the 1000 meters with a time of 2:35.5. He won the 1000 meters in the tri-state meet and was named NH winter track all-star in both the 1000 and 1500 meters. Led by co-captains Cathy Bar- ton and Jill Remick, they helped establish winter track’s credibility in the Winnacunnet athletic community. Highlighting the winter sesason was the setting of a new school record in the high jump by MVP Jill Remick of 5 feet Vi inch. Other outstanding performances were turn- ed in by Tracy Snowden, who shined in four events, and Liz Galvin, who qualifed for the state meet in the 1500 meters. Believe it or not, it's Outdoor Learning. However, they also partake in other, more familiar activities such as rock climbing, hik- ing, backpacking, canoeing, snowshoeing and orienteering (map and compass work). Outdoor Learning is much more than climbing rocks and having fun even though they play an important role. The club is also a self-propelled and self-indulging activity. Development of one's character and faith in himself is increased during the course of the year. Outdoor Learning helps the group in working as a whole for the benefit of the en- tire group. There are numerous activities and benefits for which the band plays. When performing at pep rallies or football games, the band is always a source of spirit and enthusiasm. They also play a full show during the games' half time. Marching through many parades during the year, the Warrior Band entertains Hampton and the neighboring towns with various Christmas and Memorial Day parades. The Homecoming parade was held in Hampton last Oct. 31. In addition, the band performs at many concerts held throughout the year. The highlight of the year for the Warrior Band is the Exchange Concert. This year, they are going to visit Peary High School in Rockville, Maryland. Being in the Warrior Band provides many op- portunities for a musician. Aside from playing an instrument at school and civic occasions, one has a chance to improve his playing skills and to experi- ment with different types of music. Band is also a source of developing responsibility. Members are able to form different committees in order to make plans and decisions for future activities. This way, the band is able to determine their own activities. For starters, they perform at all school activities, in- cluding a performance at the Exchange Concert. The Stage Band is also invited to perform at various high schools and for the past few years, they have played at Hampton Beach. They are responsible for sponsor- ing the Jazz Festival each year. This musical group is more than just an ordinary band. Not only do they perform at many different schools, civic dinners and concerts, they are also guests at High School Jazz shows in Maine and Massachusetts. The band’s purpose, according to Mr. Bednarz, is to give students a chance to experiment with dif- ferent types of music other than concert music. They are able to play jazz and popular tunes which can be inspiring as well as interesting and challenging. Members of the coun- cil attend Model United Nations conferences sponsored by other High Schools, Model Legislatures sponsored by the state YMCA, the Washington Congressional Workshops sponsored by the U.S. Congress and the Model U.S. Senate sponsored by Phillips Exeter Academy. These activities give students a chance to experience the workings of government and the complexities of International diplomacy and rela- tions. The club is organized especial- ly for those students who may be considering a career in Political Science after High School.” R. MacDonald world council nhs 87 Brawn Vs. . . . The weight club is a very informal organization in that there is no set membership. Anyone who is in- terested is able to participate. Meetings are twice a week on Mondays and Wednesdays in the weight room. The purpose is to improve oneself physically. The various stations for weight lifting are available for developing different parts of the body.J. D. Mildrew is the advisor of this new Winnacunnet club. He is very knowledgeable in weight lifting and is there if anyone needs help in planning a weight program or advice in what equipment would be to the best advan- tage for a certain person. Hopefully by being a regular member of this club, one will be able to know how to keep fit. Top.Jump roping helps to tone up leg muscles before the actual weight lifting. First, it is a club con- sisting of five to ten members who all share the same interest of playing chess. They play during and after school. During one week, the chess club has one official meeting and one match against another school. Many tech- niques and mental skills are involved. Anyone who wishes to increase his talent in the game or just enjoys playing or competing can join. Winnacun- net plays against such schools as Somersworth, Oyster River and Phillips Ex- eter. Whether a person comes out of the chess club with a feeling of know- ing the game well or not, they usually feel that the game helps build their competitive and thinking skills. Above Left: Richard Houle observes an intense match. Above: Advisor, Mr. Dover plays a game with Chris Fogweil. chess club 89 The Imagination Point Although working on the yearbook requires a great deal of time and energy, ingenuity and im- agination are also necessary factors. If a person lacks the ability to perform one skill, there is always someone around who is proficient in that area. Being on the yearbook staff can be busy and frustrating at times but the fun and interest of the work easily compensates. In addition, many responsibilities are involved in the making of the book. Each editor must be able to meet his or her deadlines by having pictures taken, copy written and layouts designed. Everyone helps out when advice or creative talents are needed. Last fall the entire staff went all over the region for a few hours to sell ads. Each town or a part ol one was assigned to each group. It was a very successful day in that many ads were sold. Tenth period is set aside for each person to work on his or her section. Whether it is Room 25 or the Yearbook room, something is always being accomplished. The purpose of the book is to try to capture the most memorable and most prominent activities and happenings of the past year. We feel that the yearbook is a type of time capsule that will be looked upon many times in the future. The source of our motivation and inspiration is that the yearbook is our own creation. Thus, it is our im- agination which determines its outcome. 90 yearbook Pg. 90: Top: Our fearless leaders. Heather Corbett and Jacqui Corcoran. Bottom Right: Senior Joanne Robinson spending her free time in the cafe. High School. When we, the class of 1982, entered Winnacunnet in the fall of '78, those words were magical. They meant independence. Soon we'd be attending parties till the wee hours of the morning, getting a driver's license, following the basketball team all over the state; the privileges were astounding. Though the first few days were difficult, we soon mastered the routine: double sessions, ABCD lunches, lockers that wouldn't open — nothing fazed us. We learned of the great Exeter rivalry and not to believe ANYTHING the seniors told us. Of course, all this educating didn't prevent us from electing Kelly Ritner our president, Kerry Keenan — vice president, Anne Hackett — secretary, and Nick Lermer — treasurer. Being freshmen, we naturally were of no importance in Winnacarnival, with the exception of voting Ginny Minko our princess. All in all. it was a pretty good year. The second season opened with us being second year men to a whole new crop of rookies. Naturally, we did our best to make them feel as uncomfortable as we felt. Thus tradition lives on. Some changes had been made over the summer and we returned to WHS to find that some of our freedom had been taken away with the institution called silent study.' This provided us with a new challenge: how many times can you convince your study hall monitor that you just HAVE to go to the library, only to sneak off to the cafe? Though the famed sophomore slump hit us hard, we picked ourselves up and struggled on, for we had a reputation to uphold; we were no longer freshmen! Naturally our slump didn't prevent us from electing Kelly Ritner, Forrest Snowden, Suzy Lemire, Sue Jones (who deserted us for PEA), and Jacqueline Corcoran our officers, or from placing third in a tightly fought Winnacarnival battle, with Missy Williams as our princess. We left for the beach that summer in high spirits, knowing the best times were ahead. Junior year has the reputation of being the toughest, but most enjoyable, of all your years in high school. Ours was no exception to that rule. Academically, we were bogged down with tests and more tests: PSATs, SATs, Achievements, The Great College Search. Socially, however, we shined. With our new licenses we could get anywhere, though unless we were inherently wealthy we were faced with that age-old dilemma, Can I borrow the car? Our officers had a lot of responsibility thrust upon them and they did their job well: Anne Hackett — president, Karen Eastman — vice president, Marcia Hinkle — secretary, and Jacqueline Corcoran — treasurer. We barely came in third in Winnacarnival, mostly because the only thing our team did right was vote Karen Eastman our princess. But our prom, with John Lennon's Imagine the theme, was a smashing success. The court consisted of Jill Remick, Anne Hackett, Marcia Hinkle, and Karen Eastman, with Ginny Minko our queen. It was a beautiful ending to a great year. In September of 1981 we returned to WHS from our Endless Summers' with a hint of unexpected sadness. True, we were SENIORS and would soon be getting out, but the thought of leaving people we had come to know, love, and depend on was a little hard to swallow. So we vowed to make our last year together the best it could possibly be. We began by electing our officers: Tim McConnell — president, Karen Eastman, Tony Franzoso, and Forrest Snowden — vice presidents, John Downey — secretary, and Nick Lermer — treasurer. They, with the help of our representatives, worked hard to pull off our many activities: dances, bake sales (!!!), the spaghetti dinner, Montreal, and graduation. Our class saw the second annual Homecoming, with Halloween as its theme, turn out to be a bigger success than the first. This was due, of course, to the incredible spirit and taste we displayed, especially when electing Mike Donohoe and Missy Williams our king and queen. Winnacarnival was a minor disaster. We chose Joanne Nelson our princess in hopes of crowning her queen but, alas, it was not to be. We came in third, twelve points behind the victorious juniors, but demolishing the hapless freshmen. We may not have won, but let no one say we were not a force to be reckoned with. At this writing, we were heading to Montreal in April, with a graduation date set for June 13. When this yearbook is published, we will be alumni, graduates of the class of 1982. We’ve formed friendships; some lasting, some not so lasting. We've laughed, cried, and endured together. Our four years at Winnacunnet will not be soon forgotten. 134 class history Who's Who From ’82?” In this issue, we're highlighting the members of Winnacunnet High School's class of 1982. Many distinguished citizens have hailed from those hallowed halls in Hamp- ton, NH. On the tenth anniversary of their graduation, it seems only fit to tell you what they've been up to lately. Tony Franzoso and Michelle Thom- son, two of America's classiest dressers, have been signed to pose for the latest Calvin Klein commercial. Obviously Calvin himself saw the pic- tures that were taken of them for the 1982 Sachem. Recently, Jill Remick displayed her latest creations in a posh New York fashion show. The highlight of the show: Jill's spring line of sporting goods in pink and green. Deidre Randall had quite a scare last week. While wowing London au- diences as the fair Juliet in Shakespeare's classic, she tumbled from the balcony. Luckily, she fell in- to the arms of her Romeo, portrayed by her former Winnacunnet co-star, Peter Martin. Rumor has it that Mary Cahill and Steve Berman have been hired to bake brownies for Betty Crocker. Rob Hinkle broke his own 800 meter world record for the fifth time in the United States Olympic Trials. He is expected to defend his Olympic title in the games to be held this August in Stockholm. Mike Neff and Pam Downer haven't changed much since graduation. Mike has continued his soccer career in grand fashion, just coming off an MVP season with the New York Cosmos, while Pam owns and operates an Indian Boutique in San Francisco. Tracey Jankauskas, on the other hand, rejected her New Hamp- shire life-style, cut her hair, and joined a Denver commune. Success hasn't come easy for Tim Mc- Connell and Heather Corbett, but they're successful just the same. Tim recently became the youngest reci- pient ever of the Nobel Prize in Physics while Heather has taken the journalistic world by storm as Sports Illustrated's newest editor. The Boston Symphony Orchestra recently concluded their first world tour. With the Symphony on the year-long excursion were two celebrated Winnacunnet alumni; Gor- don Eggert and M. J. Brindamour. Robin Roy recently broke the world record for non-stop talking by gab- bing for 103 hours 37 minutes 14 seconds. Watch for her name in the next edition of Guinness. Last year, as you probably know, For- rest Snowden and Suzy Lemire were appointed co-chairpersons of the elite West Haven Country Club of Long Island, eligible for only THE Most popular and influential members of the West Haven community. Our roving reporters recently caught up with Larry Lonergan pedalling around Encino, California in a flashy white suit. It seems Larry is just com- pleting a two year stint as Los Angeles County's Good Humor Man. It must have been that friendly smile! The Metrolopitan Museum of Art opened a new exhibit last month. Pro- minently displayed among the works of Promising Young Artists was a collection of sketches, paintings, and sculpture by a New Hampshire trio: Polly Clapp, Marc Dugas, and Karen Eastman. Skip Fairhurst and Ginny Minko are still going strong, portraying two of ABC-TV’s General Hospital's beautiful people. Ginny is as gorgeous as ever playing the young model known as Miss Star Eyes” while Skip is the handsome star forward of Port Charles' new basketball franchise. Marcia Hinkle and Mike Donohoe recently opened a new shop in the scenic downtown Hampton. It's call- ed Cute As ..and it sells, you guessed it, buttons!! Even though we looked forward to becoming high school students, the night before the Big Day various worries crept incessantly into our brains; — I'm going to flunk out after one semester. — Some senior will try to sell me an elevator pass and I'll be stupid enough to buy it. — I'll never, ever have a date. — I won't be popular; everyone will hate me. — Tonight my face will erupt with pimples . . . Despite these concerns, we managed to pull ourselves together and struggle through the first month. Surprisingly, the fight was minimal. We realized that high school meant week-end parties, getting a driver's license, dating upperclassmen (if we were lucky), more parties, making the varsity, having your parents recognize your level of maturity and giving you a mid- night curfew (finally), realizing there's only four years left, and still more parties. Of course, we had to take the bad with the good, which meant receiving twice as much homework than we ever got in junior high, getting dumped on by arrogant upperclassmen, realizing we're on the lowest rung of the lad- der and that there's still four years to go. However, if we wanted to be seniors, with all that involves, we had to suffer the indignities of the first year. But, watch out! Soon we’re going to rule the school!! Post Office Box 8 Hampton, NH 03812 1907-1982:75th Anniversary CONGRATULATIONS From the Yearbook Staff I I SPECIAL THANKS TO TAYLOR PUBLISHING COMPANY TAYLOR PUBLISHING COMPANY SPECIAL THANKS TO 207 Aloha to a Great Production South Pacific, which was put on stage last March by the Drama Club is the multi-award-winning musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein. South Pacific is mainly a love story mixed with the realities of the second World War. Nellie Forbush, a navy nurse, falls in love with a planter named Emile de Becque. Little does she know that he only moved to the island because he had killed someone and had run away. She soon discovers this and tries to forget him until tragedy strikes. Emile is asked to accom- pany Lt. Cable on a dangerous mission against the Japanese. When he almost loses his life, Nellie realizes that she truly loves him. The play is filled with many colorful characters, the most memorable of which is Bloody Mary. She provided a great deal of humor in the play by being so money- hungry and deceitful. Luther Billis and his friends were always trying to make life dur- ing the war a little more enjoyable and easy-going. A subplot to the play is when Mary sells her own daughter, Liat, to Lt. Cable. Ironically, the two fall in love. Aside from the humor and drama in the play, South Pacific also provides many classical songs. Among them are Some Enchanted Evening, Bali Ha'i,” I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair and There Is Nothing Like a Dame. The entire cast, crew, band and directors (Mr. Charron and Liz Dodge) should be con- gratulated on a super production. Pg. 2: Top: Audiences got quite a laugh from the Honey Bun number performed by Nellie Forbush (Lorraine Weimerskirch) and Luther Billis (Alan Reynolds). Brackett (Mark Aldrich), the hard-hearted officer. Bottom left: Nellie with Emile's children, Ngana and Jerome. Bottom right: Nellie with her love, Emile de Becque (Chris Thom). 4 Aim for the Top A .500 season usually indicates the efforts of a mediocre ball club. However, despite their 9-9 record, the 1982 Warrior baseball team was far from average. In fact, they were power- ful contenders for the playoffs all season, missing the tournament by only one place. This talented group of underclassmen was led by co-captain Steve Fowler. Fowler was a consistent threat at the plate, batting .392 with 2 homers (including a grand slam against Dover), 22 hits and 23 RBI's, a new school record. Because of his efforts, he was voted the team’s MVP. Joining Fowler on the 20-hit parade was co-captain Hugh Linnehan, who led the team in three offensive categories while batting .377. Second baseman Tony Franzoso and center fielder Gary Miller, the team's only seniors, combined talent and experience to become the team's backbone. The stopper in this year’s pitching staff was sophomore southpaw Mark Joiner. Joiner didn't start the season with the varsity, yet won six games against no losses, setting two school records in the process. The baseball team should be proud of their performance over the 1982 season. If only a few breaks had gone their way . . . but there are always ifs.” One thing is for certain — baseball had better be ready for the 1983 Warriors, 'cause they’re aiming for the top! 6 baseball V - Bottom Row: Bob Nicholson, Kim Chin, co- captain Steve Fowler, Mike Donovan, Rick Allen, co-captain Hugh Linnehan, Todd Conant, Eric Facey, and Larry Douglas. On Their Way Like their baseball counterparts, the WHS softball team had what could be considered a mediocre season. They, too, finished 9-9 and missed the state tourna- ment by one place. However, also like the baseball Warriors, their season was highlighted by crucial victories, clutch hit- ting and pitching, and impressive perfor- mances by every team member. MVP Kelly Merrill was the team's leading pitcher. Her 7-2 record set the WHS mark for most wins in a season — at one point she recorded six straight vic- tories. When not pitching, Merrill played a strong second base and was also fourth on the team with a .321 average. 1982 was the year for record-breakers. Leading the pack was shortstop Paige Kishbaugh who, while leading the team with a .392 average, set school marks for singles (29), runs scored (23), and stolen bases (15). Catcher Jeanne Trumbull led the power-hit parade, besting the RBI record with 21 and tying the home run mark with 2, while first baseperson Sue Fernandez’s 124 putouts shattered the previous record. Coach Bennett is losing five players, (Merrill, Fernandez, Ruth Boettcher, Tracy Kenison, and Jo Nelson) to graduation. The talent and experience of the remain- ing varsity players, along with the promise of the JV, should bring excitement to WHS softball followers for many seasons to come. It was April 24th, a Saturday morn- ing, when the three buses departed from Winnacunnet. It was a long hard ride and despite our exuberant spirit at the beginn- ing, the many hours on the road soon put many of us to sleep. It wasn't until the mid- dle of the afternoon that we arrived at Hotel le Sherbourg, our destination! Con- sidering our newfound energy and the fact that only two elevators were available, many of us took the stairs to get to our rooms and unpack. The rest of the after- noon was spent by meeting friends in their rooms and by investigating our new en- vironment. That night was spent by eating out at various restaurants. We soon learned that Montreal could offer a great deal to whet our appetites. The next morning, the group was taken on a two hour bus tour. We were thus able to view the various sights of the city. The many office buildings, cathedrals, sports stadiums and old neighborhoods were very interesting. Even the people of the city caught our eye when we saw their different way of dressing and styling their hair. Moreover, this culture’s habit of socializing was also fascinating. Despite the many scenic wonders of the tour, many could not pay attention due to an exhausting first night. The rest of the afternoon was left for us to do what we wished. It is odd how a class containing so many different per- sonalities ended up sharing the same pastime. Sunday night was our banquet at C.J.’s restaurant. We had a 1:00 curfew each night so of course not a minute was wasted in having fun. During our free time, everyone went their separate ways. Some went to see the Expos game on Sunday (which they won); the Meridian mall was also very popular especially for those who wanted to buy souvenirs; others went to see many of the culturally stimulating movies around town. Many girls who visited the various clubs fell in love with many of the entertainers. The last night in Montreal, a large group went to the Rendez-vous disco. We soon livened up an almost empty dance floor. There was plenty of music and refreshments which was all we needed to have a good time. After taking many pic- tures the next morning, we departed, leav- ing our mark on Montreal. W.H.S. Leaves Its Mark on Montreal Top left: Suzy Lemire, Anne Hackett, Karen Eastman and Marcia Hinkle demonstrate group spirit during one of our stops. The one joyous day that marks official emergence into the adult world. The one time in our lives where smiles and tears combine for a lifetime of memories. The morning of graduation day dawned, not clear and bright as the myth suggests, but with showers expected throughout the day, thereby postponing the ceremonies until Monday, June 14. Who will ever forget the long, seemingly endless hour spent in the gym getting organiz- ed, when in fact we were more organized (and anxious) than we had ever been? Led by our marshals Jill Lemire and Jeff Bednarz, we marched onto the football field to endure the many long-winded speeches we knew were sure to come. When the guest speaker of our graduation approached the microphone and began his speech, we knew that he recognized our restlessness. Mr. Stephen Bamford opened by stating that, when looking back, he could neither remember who the commencement speaker was nor what the theme of the message was on his graduation day. Realizing that com- mencement addresses rarely have any long-term impact, he told us that his speech was a piece of masterful research” — a collection of anec- dotes that had relevance to our day. He described and praised our teachers, a group that, as students, we tolerated, but, as graduates, we most certainly appreciate, and on- ly wish we had more opportunities to tell them so. He told us his wish that our four years at Winnacunnet had taught us not only the three R’s, but also the simple intangibles that help you grow socially, emotionally, spiritually, and psychologically.” Finally, he read to us a passage written by a senior reflecting back on her high school experience — ... But how do you say thanks for a mindful of beautiful memories? 1 remember autumns when all the excitement in the world flashed between two goalposts, winters warm with the glow of holi- day spirits ... springtimes that dazzled us with the promise of freedom, and long, lazy summer vacations when doing nothing was our favorite group activity!... It won't be easy saying good- bye to this school and to all my friends ... but I have so much more to learn about the world and about myself and it's time to get started. I only know that wherever I go, whatever I do, the days I’ve spent right here will always be a really special part of my life. We then received our diplomas and, with that, walked into the world, our world. And though we have places to go and people to meet, we will never forget our four years at WHS. They truly were a time to remember.” Top: Tony Franzoso and John Downey show their excitement and hap- piness about finally graduating!
