KM J lfrUAA t 47 Most Likely To Succeed Most Popular Class Clown Teachers’ Pet Jim Hanson and Sue Wilhelm David Paul and Katie Freeman 48 Most Musical Barry Danielian and Kathy Smith CLASS HISTORY High school. For many of us back in 1976, those words meant a lot. Entering high school meant “growing”. In no time at all we'd be staying up late, driving, watching football games in sub- zero weather — the advantages were endless. All too soon our dreams were tarnished, and we learned of the disadvantages: namely, being Freshmen. Although it took some time, we soon learned where most of the rooms were and that no matter what the seniors said there was no room 100-x. We figured out that there was no elevator, and finally determined the difference between the Blue-House and White-House Labs. We faithfully followed the tradition of arriving late to class because our lockers would not open, or some friendly upperclassmen had courteously given us directions which inevitably led us as far as possible from our desired destination (in other words, the Music room became a likely cache for English students). Being resourceful, we soon picked ourselves up, dusted ourselves off, and started again. We made new friends and adapted ourselves to the new atmosphere. We elected Paul Testa as our president, Nancy Waterhouse as our vice-president, Kathy Smith as our secretary and Ricky Silver as our treasurer. Being freshmen, we were, naturally, of no importance in Winnacarnival, with the exception of voting in Kathy Rogers as our princess. After surviving all this, we felt right at home. Now, we were ready for Winnacunnet, but was it really for us? We came back next year (most of us) with an air of casual nonchalance. And why not? We were now upperclassmen to the new batch of Freshmen. Immediately forgetting the tribulations we’d so recently endured, we vented our frustrations on the luckless newcomers (thus tradition lives on!). This year our class president was Kathy Smith with Cheryl Krisko as vice-president, Laci Chevalier as secretary, and Laurie Hutchins as treasurer. Our spirit of confidance was dampened by our finishing fourth in the Exeter Pep Rally. Our float, a big can of raid, which was supposed to “exterminate the Blue Hawks” kept falling over. An omen? Our morale was boosted a little more with a victory over the Freshmen in Winnacarnival. It wasn't a win, but it was no loss, especially as we elected Besty Brinser as our princess. All in all, a busy year, but it was only a warm- up. We were hitting our stride, and looking forward to being juniors. Our time was at hand. '78-'79 was our year. Academically we were in high gear: PSATs, SATs, Achievements, the Great College Search. Our class officers worked hard for their titles: Nancy Triggs • president, Priscilla Sawyer - vice-president, Laci Chevalier - secretary, Cheryl Krisko - treasurer. As juniors we were in charge of concession stands at the football, soccer, and basketball games. We were also busy with plans for the Exeter Pep Rally, and our efforts weren't in vain — our float took first place. Winnacarnival came next, and we won that as well (despite some jealous accusations from the seniors). Gayle Chase was crowned as our Queen. Soon, plans for the Junior Prom kept us busy. The Casino was picked as the setting, and the theme song was chosen by the class - If . Our Queen was Nancy Waterhouse, and her court consisted of Beth Hanson, Debbie Wiggins, Sabra Brickett and Kathy Rogers. It was a beautiful end to a great year. In September 1979, we returned with mixed feelings. At last we'd be getting out! But somehow the celebrating didn’t seem quite so joyous. After all, three years of hardships and good times had united us, and friendships had been formed. So we filled out college applications with a hint of sadness. Of course we still had time for all the necessities . We elected Mike Ewing as our president, Laci Chevalier as our vice-president, Todd Facey as our secretary, and Bill Downey as our treasurer. We were robbed of enjoying our last Exeter Pep Rally thanks to a juvenile and malicious attack on our float (not to mention any names, but they weren't Freshmen or Sophomores!). Winnacarnival, after a shaky start, was won handily by us. And now, as we prepare ourselves for the adventures ahead of us, we look back on our travels. Although we've come a long way, our journey has not ended, it has only begun. Now we shall face the world and look ahead to the future, our destiny. Fred R. Lermer Memories: Partying w F, J. Since these two look so much the same, Some day you may mix up their names, So check on the cheek For the mole that makes one unique, And they'll no longer look the same. B. The band is marching down the street, And these two are playing with the beat. Can't you tell these two apart? If you know them it's not hard; One has long hair and one has not. C. Opposites may be they In every sort of way; Be it body size, Or even sex ■ wise, But they still have the same birthday! D. In different pastimes they diverge Whenever they get the urge, While one uses typing ink The other paints in a wink. And together their talents splurge. E. They won't be seen with each other, And each one denies his brother, But everyone knows, For to add to their woes, Their faces resemble the other. 57 Roger Frank Nownes Likes: Music, my job. Fords. The 1979 Winnacunnet High School Varsity Football Team had an up down season with an overall record of 3-6. The team was under the supervi- sion of Head Coach Ken Liporto, and Assistant Coaches Dave Bennett, Jim Biron, and Dick Gagne. The team’s trainer was Mr. John Harris. Manager for the varsity team was Dave Kern with Ray Russell as an assistant. The two Co- Captains were seniors Jay Ward and Todd Facey. There were many outstanding players of the 1979 Warrior Team. Todd Facey had a superb year with the Warriors, as well as, first string Quarter- back, Shawn McKenzie. Senior Glen Johnson came over from the soccer team to help with the kicking for the season. Greg Sowers also punted for the team. His season punting average of approximately 38 yards, was very good for a high school player. The overall play of the Warriors was good and the team had a very good defense. The team's biggest flaw was its mistakes, that unfortunately came at key times in the game. The players learned from their errors and hardly ever made the same mistake twice. Many good players returned from 1978’s WHS team, among them was Junior; Jim Crotty who had an outstanding year with the Warriors. Hopefully he will return in 1980. Winnacunnet ended the season in fifth place in the conference. The last game against Merrimack ended WHS’s chance to make the play-offs for 1979. 116 FROSH FOOTBALL FRONT ROW LEFT TO RIGHT: Manager Chris Cox. Kevin Cummings. Jeff Copp, Ken Beebe. A season that few will forget. The team, coached by Mr. Don Foote, completed the regular season with an 11-2-1 record. This year the Warriors made it into the semi finals. A disappointing loss to Merrimack Valley High School ended it for the Warriors. Congratulations to the Warrior Soccer Team for a superb, exciting season. The expert defense of the Warriors was the major reason for the success of the team. The defensive team, led by Glen Johnson and Dave Paul, was considered one of the best. The Warriors' number one goalie; Scott Taylor, with the help of sophomore. Nick Lermer. only allowed ten goals during the regular season. Six of the regular season games were shut-outs in Winnacunnet's favor. Kevin Reusch led all scoring during the regular season with thirteen goals. The Warriors' record of games without a loss was halted by an upset to Oyster River, a very tough team. Later in the season, however, the Warriors came back to beat the Oyster River team. The season ended with the upsetting loss in the semi-finals to Merrimack Valley. The WHS Soccer Team fought hard to win the state soccer title this year, especially Tri-Captains; Glen Johnson. Kevin Reusch. and Mike Bychok. The 1979 Warrior Soccer season will be remembered long by the Varsity Players, Coach Foote, and. of course, the fans that supported the team throughout the season. FIELD HOCKEY The 1979 Field Hockey Team completed one of the best seasons in the history of Winnacunnet. The team came within a couple of points of making it into the state tourna- ment. putting together an impressive record of 8 wins. 3 losses, and 3 ties. Although winning isn't everything, it sure helps out the team's spirit. Due to a lot of bad weather, seven of the fourteen games scheduled were played in the last two weeks of the season. These last couple of weeks were topped off by the high point of the season, the Exeter game. The Warriors beat the Blue Hawks by a score of 1-0. The Exeter team went on to the state tournament, but the victory made the entire season extra-special for the Warriors. With only six graduating sen- iors on the team, the team should have the experience to put together some strong seasons in the future. SALEM, PINfcERTON OYS LON DOV SANBORN PELHAM NEWMAf E BEF. . With Curt Spear and Gary Vadeboncoeur as the team's captains, the Warriors gave their best effort at every game. This year, strong defense was given by senior, Glen Johnson and top scorers for the team were Curt Spear, Bob Deguio, Tim Harrington, and Jeff Philbrick. ACTIVITIES MARCHING ! m ; mu ■i The WHS Warrior Marching Band helps to provide much of the spirit at the football games as well as performing a half-time show. They spent a long time practicing to get the show ready. With the help of Drill Instructor Mr. Connel- ly, and Band Director Mr. Bednarz, the band learned their show and did many fine performances. BAND Pictured above were this year's captains of the WHS Warrior Marching Band. Left to Right: Band Captain Barry Danielian. Color Guard Co-Captain Alison Coffee. Assistant Band Captain Andrew Price, Color Guard Co-Captain Sue Cole. Drum Major John Bednarz. and Majorette Captain Ann Ben nett. .140 The WHS Warrior Band, under the direction of Mr. Bednarz, pro- vides four concerts every year consisting of the Christmas Con- cert, Winter Concert, Exchange Concert, and Spring Concert. Ev- ery year the highlight is the Ex- change concert. This year the band went to Rosemont, Pennsyl- vania with sightseeing in Philadel- phia. They all had a great time which will never be forgotten. 141 STAGE BAND The WHS Stage Band, under the direction of Mr. Bednarz, is a select group of students from the band. They perform in each of the four concerts throughout the year which include the Christmas Con- cert, Winter Concert, Exchange Concert, and the Spring Concert. This year the Stage Band again hosted their own Jazz Festival with guest bands performing and also themselves. They also per- formed during a Spaghetti Supper put on by the Band Boosters. To end the year they performed at the Hampton Beach Seashell Stage in June. All performances proved to be very rewarding to the Stage Band and Mr. Bednarz. K2 The WHS Chamber Singers is a select group of students from the chorus directed by Mr. Ray. They perform in each of the four con- certs throughout the year includ- ing the Christmas Concert, Winter Concert, Exchange Concert, and Spring Concert. The Chamber Singers went out this year and per- formed at area churches, clubs, and different businesses which proved to be very rewarding. CHAMBER SINGERS 143 The WHS Chorus, under the di- rection of Mr. Ray, is a group of students who perform in each of the four concerts throughout the year. They include the Christmas Concert, Winter Concert, Ex- change Concert (the highlight of the year), and Spring Concert. This year the Chorus, along with the Band, went to Rosemont, Pennsylvania for their exchange concert and all had a great time with the students from Rosemont. They also performed a fine con- 144 cert. The “Techies for Charley’s Aunt” worked very hard on sce- nery, props, construction, and pro- grams and every things else that put the show together in the fine way that it was, along with the cast. The Technical Director was Mr. Jon Rice and the Art Director was Mrs. Jill Adams. They both also worked very hard with the crews to put on such a successful play, along with Director Mr. Russ Charron, Assistant Director senior Margaret Oakes, and the cast. 145 j Lmt The WHS Drama Dept, put on the hilarious comedy Charley's Aunt” on Nov. 29, 30, and Dec. 1 and, with the help of the crews, the cast put on a fine perfor- mance. The director was Mr. Russ Charron and the assistant director was senior Margaret Oakes. The cast was: Stan Martin as Jack Chesney; John Wright as Charley Wykeham; Barbara Peterson as Kitty Verdun; Deidre Randall as Amy Spettigue; Bob Lemire as Sir Francis Chesney; Steve Johnston as Mr. Spettigue; George Oakes as Brassett; Linda Lawson as Donna Lucia D'Alvadorez; Freda Batt- cock as Ela Delahay; and last but definitely not least Craig Sikoski as Lord Fancourt Babberly (Char- ley's Aunt). DEBA TE CLUB Do you enjoy a good argument? Can you withstand a brutal verbal attack and remain undaunted in your beliefs? Or do your knees quake when a teacher mentions an oral report? Would you definite- ly prefer death to addressing fifty other human beings? Either way, the debate club should be part of your schedule. In addition to acquiring poise, self- confidence, and a knack for public speaking, the debator makes many friends from other schools. The advisor of the club, Mrs. Maureen Cullen, accompanied the entourage to different schools in rain, sleet, and snow this season. There, the members competed in tournaments to claim its annually growing collection of ribbons, medals, and trophies. To join the debate club, one should enroll in the debate class. This however, is not a prerequi- site. The class meets biweekly and is lots of fun. Pictured above is this year's debate club. Seated left to right: Tim McConnell. The feeling one gets when hanging one hun- dred feet above the ground dan- gling on the side of a cliff held only by a rope. Rock- climbing is just one of the exciting activities one can do when in Outdoor Learning. Other activities include hiking, ski touring, bike touring, tubing, can- oeing, and rock-climbing. One should join this course not only because it's exciting and exhilarat- ing but because it's unique. The advisors are Mr. Craig Seaver and Mr. Peter Yost. A one-half gym credit can be earned after satisfactorily com- pleting the course. Outdoor Learn- ing is fantastic for those who want to get out and do something differ- ent on a weekend. So get into Out- door Learning and have a great time. 149 WORLD COUNCIL World Council is in its fourth year under the guidance of Mrs. Sherrie Hoyt and Mr. Rod McDonald. The club deals with world politics and international affairs and is open to all students at WHS as a nonaccredited course. The club has many activities which keep them quite busy throughout the school year. One is the model U.N. program which zeroes in on politics and the other is the student government program. The club has also taken trips to New York and Washington D.C. NEWSPAPER STAFF Pictured at left was this year s World Coun- cil. Sitting left to right: Steve Burman, John Wright. Linda Lawson. Yes. but it is also the name of the Winnacunnet newspaper! The Blue White’s staff, led by editor Kitty Wilbur, cranked out a monthly paper printed most graciously by the Hampton Union. The paper serves two purposes: It provides both an opportunity for students to learn about journalism and an outlet for the student creativity here at WHS. Under the supervision of advisor Thomas Haggerty, the staff assembles weekly to receive assignments and meet deadlines. The newspaper staff has hopes of eventually seeing the paper as a town crier reporting on the 150 school's activities. Pictured above was this year's newspaper staff. The yearbook is the annual pub- lication containing highlights of the year and pictures of the stu- dent body and faculty. It is com- prised of a group of students and two advisors, Mr. Randall Zito and Mrs. Carleen Riordan. The editors of the yearbook including super- vising and advertising managers hold much responsibility. The en- tire staff helps each other in the making of the book. They are mo- tivated by the thought that the yearbook is of their own creation. The yearbook has its own student photographers and art staff. In photography and art, creativity can flourish. Most yearbook work is done after school in the yearbook room. This room is strictly under control of the students. There is a radio, refrigerator (usually stocked with soda), and furniture. Being an edi- tor or staff member is a challeng- ing, exciting and responsible job. 154 i i; One of the popular events each year at WHS is Winnacarnival. This year's theme was “Chilly Wil- ly in Winnaland.” The students had a fun time this year participat- ing in the events. There were many new events this year, such as: musical groups, needlepoint, spelling bee, legs contest, cookie contest, mugs contest, plus many more. After a good competition, the Seniors finally won with the Juniors in second, Sophomores in third, and Freshmen in last place. Tracey Codd was crowned Winna- carnival Queen at the dance. Ju- nior Princess was Brenda Byrne, Sophomore Princess was Missy Williams and Freshman Princess was Pam Wallace. CHESS CLUB MA THLETES The newest club to be opened this year is the chess club whose advisor is Mr. James Graham. The chess club is a small group of chess players who compete among themselves for a title in the Winnacunnet Chess Classic. The Classic is a tournament in which club members play a series of games against one another. Tro- phies are awarded as prizes. Be- sides being a competitive activity, the chess club also trains and de- velops its member’s abilities to their fullest. It is hoped that at the end of the year, every member will have improved his game and will have increased his own inter- est in the game of chess. The club meets once a week and the students supply their own equipment. The club supervisor, Glen Jones, tallies the wins and losses of each player and the club’s president is Kevin Chin.
