DEDICATION The Winnacunnet High School graduating class of Nineteen Hundred and Seventy-Nine dedicates this year's SACHEM to Miss Janis Petrou. As class advisor. Miss Petrou has been a source of inspiration. Her sincere desire to do the best for us and the personal concern which she holds for each student is worthy of apprecia- tion. We will never forget her vibrancy, sense of humor, diligence, and interest. Thank you is not enough! Many changes have occurred during the two decades but four faculty members have survived them all. Winnacunnet would like to honor these four members of the staff. The school Winnacunnet replaced Hampton Academy as the area high school in 1958. In the early part of the 17th century the Indians had a settlement in the general area north of what is now Hampton Harbor and its tributary rivers - a settlement they called 'Winnacunnet.' The name Winnacunnet had several translations. A concensus of opinions indicates that the best translation is The Beautiful Place of the Pines. Robert Dodge (left) In 1958 Winnacunnet was a new small school of 400 stu- dents. The name Winnacunnet was chosen by the voters of the district over two other choices. You could be graduating from Seacoast High School or Atlantic High School. The atmosphere of those early years, even with strict dis- cipline, was a strong school spirit and a social life that re- volved around school activities. Twenty years have brought about many social changes and new programs. Richard Ladd (right) Asa science teacher I have seen quite a few changes in the growth of Winnacunnet. As an example, the science depart- ment began with four microscopes in 1958 and we now have over forty. There have been many new and interesting sci- ence courses as wel I as new teachers added to the department. It will be exciting to see in what direction the next twenty years takes Winnacunnet. Allan Bushold (left) As I reflect upon Winnacunnet's twenty years, I realize how difficult it has been to make a dream come true. That dream was that through cooperative effort and combined re- sources, we in the four towns could provide one of the best educational programs in the state. Through efforts of a dedi- cated staff we achieved that goal and built a reputation second to none. Robert Swasey ' 'I remember wel I the graduating class of 1958 - 68 seated on the cafetorium stage, along with other dignitaries. The class of 1978 had 298 graduates. I remember the high spirits of the students from that very first day the front doors opened in September. But time and tide wait for no man or woman and we have been swept along in the tide of change over the past twenty years. 4 TABLE OF CONTENTS DEDICATION 1 TITLE PAGE 2 CREDITS 3 ANNIVERSARY PAGE 4 SCHOOL BOARD 6 FACULTY 7 ADMINISTRATION 8 ACTIVITIES 25 YEARBOOK STAFF 40 FRESHMEN 49 SOPHOMORES 61 JUNIORS 73 JUNIOR PROM 84 SENIORS 87 SUPERLATIVES 116 JANUARY GRADUATION 144 GRADUATION 152 1 ADVERTISEMENTS 194 SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS, SCHOOL BOARD Dr. Richard C. DALY There is more to breath and more to death than eye can behold or mind unfold, and more than ear can hear. There is more to life than flesh and bone and more than earth and house and stone. There is a place beyond this space, and a measurement of years and joy and fears and tears beyond this space and happenings of this human race. There is a flight of life that leaves by day of night when souls ascend and souls and bodies bend to the will of Almighty God who consecrates the sod and promises new birth on earth. There is a time ahead for all living and all dead when mercy will be sure and clear of those things very far and very near. The spirit from on high comes to those who die and soars their spirit to realms above as though they fly on wing of dove. Peace be unto thee. To you and me, a peace and promise he will give to all who stay and live, and the same promise he will keep for those who soar in sleep.
