Mr. Vaughan: There is neither measure nor expression for what you have done for us. It would be an injustice to even attempt eloquence in transcribing our gratitude. We can only hope you realize that the knowledge you have imparted will never be forgotten. Ap- preciation will be manifested in the minds and futures of students who have come in contact with you. If we keep just a frac- tion of your teaching, coaching, and friendship, we will have gained more than enough to carry us through the uncertainties we face. Upon leaving, we look back on your dedicated guidance with an inde- scribable gratefulness. Charles Dickens 79 Robin P. Willis Mark D. Wooles Precious And Few Queen Andrea Fecteau and her court--Joanna Piepgrass, Cathy Clocher, Barbara Robinson, and Eileen Casey. Class History Class Of '77 Entering W.H.S. our Freshman year was an experience in itself: a new school and a completely different lifestyle, new faces, being given wrong directions from upperclassmen, and explaining to your teacher that after one month you had forgotten your schedule and had ended up in Math instead of English. It was eating in the pit and anti- cipating your upperclassmen days up top , getting along with kids from other towns, the thought of going to see big bad Bmno (when you hadn't done anything wrong), Freshmen athletic teams, and the local hang-out , Savory Square; but most of all it was the War Between the Classes . We had spirit and we knew it with the leadership of Lee Brooks, president, Brian Barrett, co-president, John Mcllveen, vice-president, Deborah Duchemin, secretary, Mary Beth Hollingworth, treasurer, and the help of many other faithful people. As Winnacamival rolled around, we found ourselves in a confused state of mind, but we fought to the end finishing in the traditional fourth position. Bev Lewis was crowned our princess. For the next four years, many of us would be very active in the Drama Club and attend many an Exchange Trip. When we returned as Sophomores, the incoming Freshmen seemed to us small and immature, and we made many of the same jokes about them that we had heard about us. Playing cards, J. V. games and the new hang-out , Pizza Hut, were important to our school life then. Under the superior leadership of John Mcllveen, president, Lee Brooks, vice-president, Deborah Duchemin, secretary, and Mary Beth Hollingworth, treasurer, we started the first annua] Xmas Fair and made a big upset in Winnacamival by taking over second place by 11 1 2 points. Ann Smith was voted our lovely princess. Then came the 1975 Junior Prom and Brad Heath, Joanna Piepgrass, Ed Miller, Eileen Casey, Scott Danico, Barbara Robinson, Rick Steam, and Mary Beth Hollingworth were announced the ushers and usherettes. The highlight of the year, as everyone wants to remember, were the requirements for mid-years and finals. September of 1975 brought about a change of lifestyle as many began driving to school, and we entered as big Juniors led by John Mcllveen, president, Barbara Robinson, vice-president, Deborah Duchemin, secretary, and Mary Beth Hollingworth, treasurer. We soon began congregating at the newest hang-out , Friendly's, since our open campus privileges had been taken away and the halls seemed even more crowded with freshman swarming into the cafe at fourth period. We had planned for a big year: we started off by winning the Spirit Tomohawk, al- though during the next two pep rallies we defaulted to the Sophomore class in an unscheduled egg-throwing con- test with the Senior class; the football and soccer concession stand, rain or shine; the soccer semi-finals; the big Exeter defeat; a tough but close powder puff game against the Seniors; and a close second place in Winnacamival, at which our princess was Andrea Fecteau. The big highlight of the year was the Junior Prom, with the theme Pre- cious and Few . Many people took time and pride to decorate the Casino dispite storm and night, to make it the best prom in years. Dancing to the band under the circling ball and sparkling letters of the theme set the tone of the evening. Andrea Fecteau became our blushing queen, escorted by Buddy Kernahan, and accompanied by Jo- anna Piegrass, Cathy Clocher, Barbara Robinson, and Eileen Casey, princesses. As we entered our last year, we couldn't believe that we had made it or that we were the Senior class. It seemed as though we could reach out and touch yesterday, but we knew that we must move forward, not backward, and make it the BEST year. With high hopes under John Mcllveen, president, Barbara Robinson, vice-president, Debor- ah Duchemin, secretary, Shelley Brown, treasurer, we worked hard on the Exeter pep rally (even making paper flowers at parties) and thought NO ONE could defeat us on originality or in spirit, but our dreams were soon shat- tered. We took second. Throughout the year, with Hampton Beach Just For The Hell Of It , squeezing eight peo- ple into a Toyota, parties during school, tobbogganing, concerts, and those Wild W.H.S. parties we made our own fun. Friendships became stronger because this was our last year together as a class and we knew it as we began looking to college and careers. Winnacamival soon rolled around and was a complete success as we finished in first place by a solid eight points despite the valiant effort of some of The Boys to lose. Good Try Guys! With Linda Brackett chosen to represent the class, the girlS'tried their hardest and she was crowned queen of Winnacamival. All of us have experienced many good and not-so-good times here at W.H.S. which we will choose to recall and laugh at in future years. The last few months will be spent planning our graduation activities, the highlights of which will be our Senior day and Senior night (which we hope will be the most exciting and memorable for years to come) and finally, the commencement ceremonies. As this page in our life is turned we will wish to remember, but not to return, for as time moves on so must we. Soccer The Winnacunnet Junior Varsity Soccer Team had a very successful season in the fall of 1976 resistering a record of 7 wins, 1 loss, and 1 tie. After an opening game 0-0 tie with Exeter, the Warriors won their next 4 games in a row, 3 of them by shutouts before they suffered their only defeat, at the feet of a very tough Masconomet team. The team bounced back strongly from the loss recording two straight shutouts over Portsmouth and New- market before they met Masconomet again in their final game of the season. The Warriors capped an outstanding season by avenging their only loss with an overall team effort in a 3-2 win over Masconomet. Many of the Junior Varsity players gained a wider knowledge of the game, stronger skills and greater experience which will strengthen the Warrior's Varsity in the next two years. Several of the players had outstanding seasons, particulary by the defensive unit. The team allowed only 6 goals in 9 games, 5 of which were scored by the strong Masconomet Team, and the team shutout their opponents in 6 of 9 games, an outstanding record. Led by goal- ie Jeff Bryant and the strong play of fullbacks Tom Heath, Gary Annis, and the team's Most Valuable Player--Peter Whitney, the de- fense led the way all season. Halfbacks Tim Speanburg, Dave Lamprey and Mike Flanagan, led the team at Midfield, and Forward Dave Pettis had a great season scoring 4 game win- ning goals. The 1976 Junior Varsity Team played as a solid unit with all 19 players contributing to their fine season. Many of these players will be heard from in the Winnacunnet High School future. The following 13 weeks involved 4 scrimmages, 9 games in Divisions I G II and 79 tough practice sessions. With 9 returning lettermen, early season predictions made the War- riors definite conference leaders. Several key in- juries in the first game, however, slowed progress and a final 3 wins--6 loss record became history. Outstanding preformances were turned in by many players. Quadra-Captains Brad Heath, Mark Talor, Jeff Weeks and Steve Kenney led the team into battle each Saturday. All-State honors were won by Steve Kenney, offensive guard and Mark Smith, defensive linebacker. Most Valuable Players for the season were Offense: Steve Kenney, Defense: Mark Smith, and overall MVP Jeff Weeks. The highlights of the season had to be in our last game--a victory over Division I rival Salem, with Jeff Weeks scoring 3 touchdowns and rushing for 190 yards. The most disappointing loss was to Concord 6-7 in which we completely dominated the game offensively, but couldn't get across the goal line more than once. Other tough games were with Exeter, losing after being ahead 8-6 with just 3 minutes to play and winning 14-0 vs Laconia and finally losing 22-14. The future looks bright for the Warriors with 24 Juniors and 12 Sophomores returning for next year. Offensively, Andrea Lago led the team in scoring, often from a steal and full court drive. Three players stand out for constant hustle and aggressive play that often led to a steal or turnover by our opponents--Andrea, and Freshmen Kathy Smith and Nancy Triggs. A team with only one senior is seldom suc- cessful in any high school varsity sport. However, the future does look bright for the basketball program, despite the con- siderable number of lopsided scores this year. The most impressive thing about this year's team was its tenacity and courage. De- spite being out gunned in almost every con- test, they never once gave up to the usually physically superior opposition. The leadership and dedication of Scott Danico was a valuable asset this year, as was the improvement under fire of Scott Feeney, Bill McGovern, Scott MacDonald, Glenn Martin, and Chuck Bradley who along with returning Scott Bean (a sopho- more starter last year who missed this year due to an injury) and the consistent con- tributions of sophomore Greg Janetos (who this year surpassed the 500 point mark) should give naxt year's team a solid foun- dation on which to build its season. Due to a lack of height and physical size the JV's have played some good ball games and lost, but winning and losing at this level is not as important as finding our weaknesses and improving on them. Seeing most of the action this season have been Sophomore Chuck Casassa, and Dana Mullen at forward, with Kirk Ohlemeier, Marty O'Keefe and Fred Depuy at guard. The brightest spots have been the Freshman: Steve Audet has been very steady at center, Paul Sicard has worked on his offense, and Ladd Carmen is at another forward position. Coach Hopkins says these boys are very coachable and have worked hard all season. TOP SCORERS Paul Sicard Dana Mullen Steve Audet TOP REBOUNDERS Steve Audet Dana Mullen 108 URRKJRS VRRIORS W PRIOR? However, the second half was a different story for the Warriors as they overpowered opposing teams to capture eight of their last ten games. It was a very successful season in which boys, who had never played together in the junior high level, put their act together to develope into a solid unit. The squad was led by the rebounding and sharp- shooting of forward Dave Sanderson who ended the season with 149 points. The ball handling and quickness of Guards Mike Bychok and Kevin Reusch, combined with the offensive surges of denter Howie Styles, provided the steady offense needed in many crucial situations. Overall scoring for the team, with one game remaining in the season, went as follows, in the top ten were: Gary Connor 20 gls., 14 asst., 34 pts; Bobby Moore 10 gls. , 16 asst. 26 pts; Kevin Maloney 12 gls., 13 asst., 25 pts; Shaun Harrington 2 gls., 10 asst., 12 pts; Bill Snow 6 gls., 5 asst., 11 pts; Wayne Bruno 3 gls., 5 asst., 8 pts; Ed Eastman 3 gls., 5 asst., 8 pts; Mike Reusch 2 gls., 5 asst., 7 pts; Mike Barr 3 gls., 2 asst., 5 pts; Jim Vadeboncoeur 3 gls., 1 asst., 4 pts; Walter Wormwood 1 gl., 3 asst., 4 pts; Gary Annis 1 gl., 3 asst., 4 pts. In Division II play the team amussed a record of 2-3-1. Overall the team notched a 5-14-1 record with one game remaining. Another highlight of the season, was the consistent play of the freshmen and sophomores on the J. V. team. The team recorded a 6-4-0 record with 4 games remaining. Jay Oakly was high scorer with 10 gls. , 11 asst., 21 pts. in 10 games. The teams record does not reflect how well everyone played and how much we all tried; usually losing the game in one period, and playing even, good hockey the rest of the way. With the number of juniors and sophomores who worked under Co-Captains Bob Moore and Gary Connor this year, and played well all year, along with good goaltending supplied by up and coming sophomore Mike Garrish and Junior Bryan Yeaton, future seasons at W.H.S. hockey should see strong, winning teams. 114 The Soccer Cheering Squad 1976 ■ z LEFT TO RIGHT. Led by co-captains Brian Goode and Bruce McClelland the team had a regular season record of 16 wins-2 losses. The key to the Warriors success was its depth in many events. Winnacunnet sent seven boys to the State Meet and five to the New England Meet which was held at Win- nacunnet. Senior Brian Goode scored an amazing 220 points which is the highest in school history. Starting the season with a new coach and an entirely different program, the team got off to a rather slow start with a 2 -4 record after the first 6 games. With additional hard work and dedication, the team continued to improve and won 9 games and lost 4 over the re- mainder of the season for an overall record of 11-8. Making the State Tournament in 7th position, the opening round 2-0 victory over second-seeded Porthmouth, and getting to the semi-finals of the tournament before losing to Keene by a score of 3-0, were some of the highlights of the season. The pitching staff of Lance Chevalier, Rick Eaton, Jim Parsons and Ed Miller pitched some outstanding baseball. With an earn- ed run average of 1.44 for the season, a few less miscues in the field would have improved the season record a great deal. Leading batters Bob Ricker (. 357, 15 runs) , Rick Eaton (9 doubles, 20 RBI's, 5 game winning hits), Lance Chevalier (3 homeruns, 3 game winning hits) Dave Elliot (14 walks, 15 runs), Don Gibadlo (2 game winning hits), contributed to the offen- sive statistice for the season. Shortstop Ray Robin, Catcher Bill Smith, Outfields Rich Mcllveen and Tim Yeaton, and Infielder Dave Kalar all con- tributed in a big way to our successful season. Two sophomores, Jeff Hawkins and Glen Martin, played a great deal and are bright prospects in their remaining 2 years at Win- nacunnet High School. Dave Elliot Managers Randy Call and John Mcllveen deserve much credit for their helpful, behind-the-scenes work. By ski-touring, hiking, climbing, cycling, and ca- noeing, you can cover new ground, see new sights, develop new re- sources and outlooks. Outdoor Learn- ing opens up the realm of the out- doors to anyone willing to accept the challenge. 172 173 Charlie Drama Club You're A Good Man Steve Harold, Keith Mills, RoseAnne Loiacono, Maureen Shea, Collen Batt- cock, Darby Harmon, Cathy Dodge, Mary Rae Preston, Dianne Hawley, Lisa Merrill, Holly McConnell, Terry Kinsman, Doug Holderman, Sue Wil- helm, John Mcllveen, Juanita Kus, Paula Yusciewcz, Susan Fitz, Joanna Price, Tracy Cassidy, Anne Stebbins, Kathy Bar- rett David Thibedeau, Scott Fifer, Lori Law- son, Kathrina Feraira, Lauren Augusta, Gini Cole, Ron Cates, Con- nie Jacques, Brad Cates, Linda Depuy, Blaine Conant, Cheryl Krisko, Priscilla Sawyet Brown t s¥Qory During the spring of 1976 You re a Good Man Charlie Brown, directed by Mr. Charron and Beth Nicholson, was presented by the Winnacun- net Drama Club. Special thanks go to Mr. Ray and Mr. Bednarz for their musical contributions. 174 The Hobbit The Hobbit, directed by Mrs. Donna Dennehy and Roseanne Loiacono was presented on Decem- ber 2, 3, and 4. Many of the scene changes would not have taken place without the technical direc- tor Mr. Charron. 175 176 Directed by Mr. John Rice and Ms. Lisa Merrill, the musical production, Bye Bye Birdie, was a huge success. Members of the leading and supporting cast include, Doug Holderman, Carol Livingstone, Jessie Mason, Cheryl Conant, Holly McConnell, John Mc- Ilveen, Desiree Loy, Mary Rae Preston, Stan Martin, Maureen Shea, Darby Harmon, and Blaine Conant. Of course, the show would not have gone on without che cooperation of Mr. Ray, Mr. Bednarz, Mrs. Dennehy, and the technical crews. 177 Powder Puff '76 The 1976 Powder Puff Football game was played on Sunday, Nov. 14, before a standing-room only crowd. This year's game pitted the senior girls (coached by Bear Brooks) against the junior girls (head coach Weej Hause). During the first half, Junior QB Kel- ly Dennis couldn't get her offense rolling. The Jun- iors were caught in their own end zone for a safety when DT Buck Hollingworth broke through. Before halftime the Seniors scored 2 TDs behind the hard running of Anne The Bam Crotty and Jo Crazy Legs Piepgrass. During the second half the Junior offense started moving the ball but were stopped cold by the Seniors 52 defense. Senior QB Sue Regis mixed her plays well enough to get another Senior TD before the game ended. Special thanks to referee Steve Hog Kenney. SENIORS 20 Final Score JUNIORS 0 178 Winnacarnival WINNACARNIVAL The theme for this year was Frosty Frolics and was fun for the entire student body. This year Winnacamival took place from February 3 to February 12. The events started off with Lee Brooks and John Janetos winning the Winnabowl. Of course they could not have run without the help of their coach Dave Whitney. Sophomores Greg Janetos and Julia Jubb gave the Seniors a tough fight but still came in second. The Juniors came in third with Don Hause and Jeff Hawkins representing their class. The Freshmen came in last with Kathy Smith and Carol Walker as their represen- tatives. Don't worry Freshmen you'll be Seniors in four more years. The princesses included: Cathy Rogers (Fresh- men), Diana Daniels (Sophomores), Mary Ann Fliss (Juniors), and the Senior Queen was Linda Brackett. The final scores were; SENIORS--55, Sopho- mores—63, Juniors—71 1 2, and Freshmen— 91 1 2. 183 Yearbook Staff Adivi sor—Mr. Herbert Holmes Editor In Chief—Liz Jones Senior Editor--Desiree Loy Activities Editor—lisa Merrill Boy's Sports Editor— Shelley Brown Girl's Sports Editor—Kelly Dennis Juniors—Sandy Miller Mary Ann Fliss Jane Norton Sue Palmer Sophomores--Scott Fifer Darby Harmon Freshmen—Tori Curtis Vickie Bassett Ads Editor—Heather Hammond Ads Correspondent— Gerry Bonsey Sales--Doris Donahue Linda Amcharico Photographers—T ammy Watson Lee Brooks Brian Barrett Jim Preston Karin Stone Jeff Sicard Artists--Sharon Cornish Jayne Swift Bill Perkins Typists--Kathe Zappala Dottie Chase Special Thanks to Mr. Moyer ©51 15 OS 15 © IS OS 154'S © 15 © © 55 © © ©©© © ©© © 1$ © 5$ © 1$ ©© ©© © 55 1$ © 55 © © © 15 ©©©©© ©©©© © 5 5 HEADQUARTERS BATTERY THIRD BATTALION 197th FIELD ARTILLERY NEW HAMPSHIRE ARMY NATIONAL GUARD PORTSMOUTH NH 03801 Telephone A36-5Q28 That’s the job of the New Minutemen.
