At a time in our lives when experiences with the real world had been limited to junior high field days and two month poetry projects, it seemed as though we were ex- pected to turn into star athletes and whiz kids overnight. Besides having to adjust to new resposibilities and making new friends from other towns, we had to deal with the frustration of reckoning with one of the worst forces of all; upperclassmen. Freshman year was trying at first; it's hard to say what was worse--l) attempting to explain to the teacher that you were late to class because even after a month of high school you had forgotten the combination to the locker that contained your schedule or 2) learning not to buy those elevator passes to elevators that did not exist. We came through the first few months a little weary but much wiser for all our experience . . . and even managed to pull off the greatest upset of all time when we placed a close second in Winnacarnival. Whats more, we exhibited the best taste in choosing Kim Johnson as our princess for the big event. It was at that moment that the Class of 76 realized its tremendous potential, and under the leadership of Debbie Monegan class president, Mike Forsberg vice president, Kris Bonansing secretary, and Tami Clark treasurer, we began to raise enough money to support the class. Returning Sophomore year with all the confidence and assurance of second year students and all kinds of plans to win everything and anything, we were probably one of the most spirited groups that Winnacunnet had seen for some time. Appropiately, we adopted the class nickname Spirit of 76 and Brad Jett, Mike Hamilton, Tina Dodge and Meg Ober were soon busy preparing for the Super year . It didn't turn out as well as expected though as we found out that the float we had so carefully put together consisting of a blue hawk hanging out of a coffin was an idea that had been used the previous year. The night of this Exeter pep rally was by no means a total loss however, as we were still the rowdiest bunch by far and won the cheering competition. Look out Seniors! Winna- carnival came, and with class favorite Nancy Ratoff as our princess, we out did ourselves, coming in second place to the Seniors by only 1 1 2 points! It was becoming quite clear that ours wasn't just any ordinary class. September of 1974 saw us entering school once again with great expectations for the coming year. Now we were truly veterans and we looked forward to the months that we hoped would be the most memorable of our four years at Winnacunnet. Money-raising was probably uppermost on our minds, a problem that would be a difficult one to solve as we would only have two concession stands on the new football field. We were a little disappointed at having only placed third in Winnacarnival, especially since we wanted to see Debbie Monegan crowned queen. Prom time approached and prospects for making over the cafeteria looked dim. Prospects brightened however, as a work crew of Meg Ober, Bill Smith, Tina Dodge, Mike McGrail and Decorations chairwoman Kathy O'Shea made plans to decorate the Cafeteria with the theme of Showboat . The class once again showed their excellent taste by electing Kim Johnson as Prom Queen, with princesses Diane King, Pam Blais, Jody Sherman and Debbie Anthony. Senior Year approached with many changes instore for the class. However, it was still obvious that the Super Seniors were dominating the school and its functions. Class officers Debbie Monegan, Meg Ober, Sara Bychok and Cathy Carlisle began making plans for a superb Senior Banquet, along with many money-making ideas to help cover the cost. Winnacarnival soon rolled around, giving the Seniors an easy victory over the underclassmen, hav- ing Queen Cindy Wheelen represent the class. After getting the problem of measuring for caps and gowns out of the way, the class planned a Spagetti Dinner for March 10. It was a huge success thanks to all the Seniors who gave their evening for cooking and serving the meal. The last few months will be spent planning our graduation activi- ties. The highlight of which will be our senior day at the Wentworth and the evening commencement ceremonies. As the Bicentennial year draws to a close and a new year in our lives begins, we will wish to remember but not to return for as times moves on so must we. The Jv baseball team completed their '75 campaign with the record of 7-8, losing our last game of the season to a strong Dover team 3-2 in nine innings. Although experiencing a few drastic losses, we greatly enjoyed beating Exeter! Overall we had a real great sea- son under the coaching of Skip and especially the bus rides home. By T. White 99 Varsity Baseball 1975 Capt. Bob Lago Winacunnet Varsity Baseball by Coach Richard Ladd The Warrior baseball team got off to a good start as Ricky Eaton stopped the Alvirne Bron- cos with 13 strikeouts, and Butch Johnson provided the clutch hit to win 3-0. After a loss to Exeter, the Warriors bounced back to win their big- gest game of the year by beat- ing the Portsmouth Clippers 4-2 with key hits by Dave El- liot and Lance Cheval ier sup- porting Rick Eaton's good pit- ching. After a tough loss to Spaulding on a cold and windy day, the team edged St. Tho- mas behind Lance Chevalier's pitching 3-0. After losing to a strong Salem team, Capt. Bob Lago led the Warriors past Pinkerton, Alvime and Spaulding. After losses to Portsmouth and Keene, the Warriors ended up the season in good form as they defeated Dover behind Rick Eaton and key hits by Clancy Tager, Gary Walker, Bob Ricker and Lance Chevalier. At the end of the season. Senior Halfback Geoff Merrill ran away in the voting and was names MVP. John Janetos and Rich Mclllveen were voted Captains for next year. Even with a poor record, the players still had fun practic- ing. Learning new techniques helped take our mind off our record. All the players had good attitudes all through the season and never became losers. Mr. Carrier (our coach) explain- ed his appreciation for our constant determination to be better and for our attitudes at the end of the season. Mr. Carrier also announced his resignation to us six days after our last game. By J.R J.R. 137 Varsity Basketball Cheerleaders 1975-76 Co-captain Diane King . Eileen Casey . , . Cheryle Prakop . In the regular season the team had 11 wins and 7 losses losing to some schools by only a couple of points. Five new school records were set: Bob Fletcher with a time of 8.0 seconds in the 60 yard high hurdles; Bruce McClelland cleared 6'2 in the high jump; Brian Goode breaking his own records in the 60 yard dash and the 300, and the mile relay team of McClelland, Goode, Jim Kuntz and Lee Brooks. At Class L meet the Warriors placed a disappointing 3rd behind Portsmouth and Sal- em after being disqualified in the relay event. The Warriors placed 5th in the State meet with Brian Goode winning both the 60 and 300. At the Northern New England Meet'held at Dartmouth College the Warriors placed 2nd behind Cheverous High School of Portland, Maine. Brian Goode won both the 60 and 300. McClelland placing 5th in the high jump. and the relay team placed 4th smashing the ola school record. However, as six of these losses were by one goal, the Warriors total wins do not indicate the true ability of the team. Coached by Francis Harrington and James Tufts, Winnacunnet's game reached new levels of efficiency in passing, breaking out and stick-handling. In a schedule composed of mostly Division 1 teams, the ice men lead by co-captains Scott Johnson and John Regis, truly held their own. The bulk of the scoring was done by the first line, Ron Martin—37 pts., John Reg- is—32 pts., and Gary Connor—28 pts. Scott Johnson, Mike McGrail, and John Woods anchored the defense. Many underclassmen saw action this year and developed into fine players. With Bobby Moore, Kevin Maloney, Gary Connor, Shaun Harrington and Jim Va- daboncoeur all returning; the team prospects look bright. Hackett What Is A Friend? What is a friend? I will tell you. It is a person with whom you dare to be yourself. Your soul can be naked with him. He seems to ask of you to put on nothing, only to be what you are. He does not want you to be better or worse. When you are with him, you feel as a prisoner feels who has been declared innocent. You do not have to be on your guard. You can say what you think, so long as it is genuinely you. He understands those contradictions in your nature that lead others to misjudge you. With him you breathe freely. You can avow your little vanities and envies and hates and vicious sparks, your meannesses and absurdities and, in opening them up to him, they are lost, dissolved on the white ocean of his loyalty. He understands. You do not have to be care- ful. You can abuse him, neglect him, tolerate him. It makes no matter. He likes you—he is like fire that purges to the bone. He understands. You can weep with him, sin with him, laugh with him, pray with him. Through it all—and underneath—he sees, knows and loves you. A friend? What is a friend? Just one, I repeat, with whom you dare to be yourself. —C.
