We found ourselves wandering halls trying to find classes, and missing many a lunch. Winnacarnival arrived, finding the class lost in confusion, but with alot of enthusiasm we had a great time. Although we ended in fourth place, our hopes were high for the following year. Ra- diant Kathy Schaake was crowned our princess. Sophomore year, returning as upperclassmen now, we marvelled at how small and immature the incoming fresh- men seemed. The Girl’s Volleyball team took a first place in Intramural competition. Winnacarnival brought high spirits and nervous anticipation, yet we failed to take first place. Lovely Jill Hansen represented our class as princess. Junior year was easily the busiest, with the hope of raising money on all our minds. The endless chain of boiled hot dogs seemed to never end, many thanks to Eileen, Tom, and Kevin for giving up their Saturdays to help. Powder Puff was a valiant effort for our enthusiastic team but ended in a 0-0 game. Winnacarnival was arriving and though we gave it a good try were unable to crown pretty Bonnie Perkins the queen. One of our biggest excitements of our Ju- nior year was a double victory over Portsmouth which put us in the tournament ending the season in the state semi- finals. With this year also our prom, with the theme “Close to You” found ourselves many an afternoon decorating the Casino and hours of lilac stealing! We ended the night happily voting Kathy Schaake our blushing Queen escort- ed by Dan Nersesian, and Darby, Dawn, Jill, and Bonnie as princesses. This year the class acquired Open Campus thanks to the determination of Mark and Jill. Our last year has been a mixed one with everyone planning for the future. We were sorry to see 40 Seniors leave our class half year with a January graduation. Winnacarnival was a great and final success. The Mighty Seniors stomp the Underclassmen. The attractive Jo Anne Blackburn reigned as Queen of the “Soc Hop”. All of us have experienced many good and not-so-good times here at W.H.S. and will laugh and recall cruising, those Saturday night parties, and the many friends. In leaving W.H.S. we will wish to remember but not wish to return for as time moves on so must we. The 1973 Varsity Soccer team had an excellent season, compiling a record of 7-2-3. It was a young, hustling team that just missed the state tournament by.01 of a point. They were led by a strong defense which set school records for allowing the least goals in a season, (7) and recording the most shutouts ever, (7) five of which were consecutive. Following the season, the players chose Jim Janetos. John Macarthur, and Chip Nutter as next years tri-cap- tains, Coaches Vaughn. Foote, and McCarthy chose se- nior Mike Vallier as the most improved player. 138 The co-captains for this year were Doug Bean and Glenn Miller. They led the team through an excellent season. Never did they perform their jobs better than the day of the game with their arch ri- vals Oyster River. The Warriors defeated the Bob- cats 2-1, on a wet field. Glenn scored the first goal, and Doug allowed only one by the Bobcats. Dave Elliot also scored. This was the first time in 6 years that Oyster river had been beaten on it’s own field. 139 140 141 1973 WARRIORS 1st Row: B. Ficke. D. Hamilton, J. Kcrtanis, B. Young, K. Johnston, D. Nersesian, M. The Warriors' losses to Exeter and So- mersworth dashed the hopes of winning the Divison champion- ship. However, a great deal was accomplished. The team posted a fine 6-3 lecord that included upset victories over Division 1 Portsmouth and Salem. Our most valuable player, Paul Re- mick. rushed for over 1000 yards and had eleven touchdowns. He was a tremendous asset to the whole team. A spirit of good, clean, hard-hitting ball was developed and hopefully will carry into next season. But through all the hard work, a great many friendships and fond memories were developed. The team's suc- cess can be greatly attributed to the mutual feeling of respect, appreciation, and friendship for the great coaching staff of Dave Deshon. The pep rally previous to this year’s Exeter football game proved to be one of the liveliest and most spirited rallies WHS. has had. With the fanfares from the band and the cheers from both the cheerleaders and the on-lookers. Win- nacunnet was ready to meet its arch-rival Exeter. This year the added feature of a cheering contest was the highlight of the rally with “Bull- roar Pasquill and company walking away with the show. The 1973 Winnacunnet Cross-Country Team, coached by Harold Fernald and led by Captain Kevin Heath ran well this year, despite the season record of 2-7-2. The team was young and inexperienced including 1 senior 3 juniors, 3 sophomores, 4 freshmen. Winnacunnet placed 3 men in the top 25 in the 2nd Annual Winnacunnet Inveteonal; Dermot Palmer 18th, Kevin Heath 19th, and freshman Blaine Conant 20th. This years most valuable player award went to Capt. Kevin Heath. Next years team will be led by Co-Captains Dermot Palmer and Mike Prakup. Coach Fernald is looking forward to a successful 1974 season with 7 re- turning lettermen. 148 Seniors The senior team was coached by Keith Wilkinson, Ray Clements, and Bob Young. Jeff Andrews and Paul Remick also helped the girls. Seniors would like to thank them for devoting their time and teaching us. Thanks also to Joe Kertanis and Ken John- ston who did a great job as referees and run- ning the clock!! (That's our secret seniors!) The hustling senior team included: Beth Bacon, Anne Battcock, Pat Bushway, Pat Carter, Martha Claverie, Gail Humphrey, Darby Mahan, Lynn Mattucci, Mary Mc- Govern, Carol McGrady, Debbie Mcllveen, Sharon Milliken, Bonnie Perkins, Beth Smith, Dawn Swindells, Gretchen Taylor and Dawn Walker. Sean Durkin, Chuck Littlefield, Scott Johnson, Gary Connor, Peter Arguin, Bobby Mure, Danny Connor, Steve Johnson, Glenn Miller, Darren Carey, Coach Royal. The Winnacunnet hockey season was a successful one with a 6-8 record. This was a great improvement over last year's sea- son considering that this is only the second year of existence. The team, coached by Joe Bruno and George Royal, and led by team captains Mike Lago and Glenn Miller, defeated three first division teams and played well against their own division placing second in it and participating in the tournament. Next years team should be a fairly strong one as the team is only losing two seniors. HOCKEY SCOREBOARD Schedule w. n. S. OPP. Masconomet. After dropping their first five starts they went on to win the last nine games in a row, to finish with a 9-5 record. Although this wasn't good enough to get them in the tourna- ment, the girls did manage to beat each of the area teams that did go: Portsmouth. Dover, and Oyster River. The Portsmouth game was the turning point of the year as they went into the game 0-5 against an undefeated Portsmouth team and came out w ith a good w in. This game demonstrated the determination and desire that stands as the mark of this years team. Leaving the team will be senior co-captains Mary McGovern Susan Grenier. Also graduating is Helena Joiner. These three girls have been valuable both on and off the court. Mary and Susan were the leading scorers on this years team and both have played varsity since they were sophomores. Miss McGovern was top rebounder and Miss Grenier was top foul shooter. Mary McGovern with 86 rebounds led the team. Sue Dennis. 75. Sue Grenier, 70. were the other girls with the bulk of the rebounds. Susan Grenier with 132 led the in scoring. The other top scorers were Mary McGovern. 122. and Sue Dennis 106. One of the strong points of this team was their w illingness to w ork and improve. 155 mox Being a cheerleader is not all glory. Cheer- leading consists of much hard work, which includes a constant search for more effective means to encourage the interest and pride of the student body in sporting events at Winna- cunnet. This task not only include learning cheers, yelling at pep rallies, and cheering at ball games, but also painting signs, baking cookies, washing cars, and performing com- munity services. The girls attended cheering camp at Bran- deis University where they learned new rou- tines and techniques to arouse spirit. These cheerleaders arc wholeheartedly immersed in their chore. No other group in the school could be found to have the enthusi- asm and pep of this one when it comes to Winnacunnet school spirit. Cheerleaders J.V.'s: Front Rose Coellner. Captain Linda Hurley. Bean was the mainstay on defense with a team-leading average of 14 rebounds per game. Guards Chuck Colby and Dave W. Hamilton led the passing attack, while Dave Pray and Phil Bean shared the fifth starting spot for most of the season. This team is different from most others as it is not one that you go out for. but the advisor picks you Our team generally consists of four seniors, four juniors, and one sophomore. But as of late another sophomore or even a freshman has been taken along in order to give them the experience be- fore participation as a regular Each sear there arc six meets Each meet must contain five categories and a participant can enter at most three categories. Examples of categories are: arithmetic, factoring, quadrat- ics. simihar triangles, algebraic fractions, and a myriad of others. In each category there are three questions: a two-pointer that everyone should be able to do. a three-pointer that a majority can do. and a five-pointer that is to be a challenge. Generally, ten minutes arc allowed for each category. At the end of the year, the winning school in each division receives a permanent trophy The League winner receives a trophy to keep for one year There arc individual awards to the two persons attaining the highest scores For seniors, it is a particularly tough battle to be high scorer as that senior will receive a scholar- ship. The Seniors finished with 65 points while the Sophomores ended up with 6616 points. The Juniors wound up with 71 points to capture third place while the Freshman finished in fourth. There were two new events among this years’ activities. In Girls Floor Hockey, the Seniors proved victorious with two hard fought wins includ- ing a double overtime victory over the Juniors.
