THE 1967 SACHEM Winnacunnet High School Hampton, New Hampshire The Whole is Equal to the Sum of the Parts In our sophomore year at Winnacunnet High School, we learn this axiom in geometry class. It is a logical, universal concept that anyone could testify to as a practical truth. But the true meaning of this mathematical reality becomes clear only when we face graduation as a senior class. Then, we remember the parts: students, faculty, classes, athletics, and activities; the whole: Winnacunnet High School. Each is separate and important, but we, the Class of 1967, also remember another axiom, one which sums up the past four years - The whole is GREATER than any of its parts. 2 SENIORS 27 STAFF EDITOR ASSISTANT EDITOR BUSINESS MANAGER ASSISTANT LITERARY EDITOR ART EDITOR ASSISTANT SENIOR EDITOR ASSISTANTS SPORTS EDITOR UNDERCLASSMEN EDITOR ASSISTANT ACTIVITIES EDITOR ASSISTANT FACULTY EDITOR ASSISTANT ADVERTISING EDITOR TECHNICAL ASSISTANTS PHOTOGRAPHER SECRETARY to the ADVISOR ADVISOR June Charters Janet Savage Tom Hartnett Michele Demarest Shelley Luck Sue Blythe Peter Jautaikis Bob Freeman Rod Blake Liz Brennan Janet Blatchford Mary Ann Ross Jill Fernald Peppa Barnaby Dale Pratt Kris Hinkley Gloria Carpenter Heather Coombs Maureen Mullen Tom Chernesky Rita Hayes Mark Savage Dena Fenderson Mr. Elliot Rowsey 3 DEDICATION With sincere gratitude and deep appreciation, we dedi- cate this SACHEM to two people who have unselfishly sacri- ficed their time and effort to make our last two years at W.H.S. rewarding and worthwhile. Because of their encouragement and understanding, we, the Class of 1967, would like to give them the recognition which they justly deserve. In striving to fulfill their expectations and high stand- ards, we hope that we have not failed them, for they have not failed us. Thank you, Miss Curry and Mr. Lavallee. You are graduating into a world in which po- litical, social, and technological changes and in- novations are taking place with baffling rapidity. The world outside is expecting a great deal from its youthful citizens these days. You will be ex- pected to meet your individual responsibilities in the most direct and uncompromising way that you can. I do not need to instruct you as to what these responsibilities are. The fulfillment requires the highest order of moral strength and courage. Your parents and teachers also deserve praise and congratulations on this occasion of your grad- uation from high school, for it is through their combined efforts that you have attained this im- portant goal. My personal wish is that each of you realize much success, happiness, and accomplishment in your lifetime. Paul L. O'Neil Superintendent A community cannot be happy in one part and un- happy in another. It's all or nothing, no patching any more forever. H. G. Wells H. G. Wells wrote the above words in 1905 as he looked to 20th Century progress in recognizing the worth of each individual and the dignity of man. But for all our strides forward, there remains much to be done in the years ahead. Your theme for this Yearbook will convey a different message to each person, but I look to your message in terms of all humanity. I know that the whole of mankind is equal to the sum of its parts, but it is some of these divisions that concern me in 1967. You as high school graduates must contribute to a dialogue that will bring about a better under- standing of man's relation to man. You must be ready to recognize the differences in individuals without debasing human dignity. Finally, and most important, your individual roles must never be treated indifferently; for you as a member of our society must give more than lip service to your convictions. For in the real truth of the matter, The whole is equal to the sum of the parts , and humanity is equal to the sum total of individuals that live in this world. Daniel S. Wentworth Department Head, English Death be not proud, though some have called thee Mighty and dread- ful, for thou art not so . . A generation of students echoes Donne's words because they will remember Mrs.. Theresa Wentworth, now departed but still alive in the minds and hearts of all who knew her. In our century, one littered with hordes of uncommitted men, the loss of one so deeply devoted to her God, her family, and her work is a loss not easily replaced. For Mrs. Wentworth brought to us at Winnacunnet a kind respect for all men; a love of the aesthetic;a desire for academic excellence simple dignity seededand harvested in the great literature of the past. Let us not become sentimental but rather inspired by the memory of Mrs. Went- worth and the signal contribution she has made to Winnacunnet and to each of us in our lives. In this way death can be defeated, and she will live on, forever. 24 INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS CENTER Mr. Peter Brooks Director Let's see now A new Instructional Materials Center has been established this year in the former music rooms at Winnacunnet. This project, esta- blished under a federal grant received by Supervisory Union 21 in 1966, provides library and audio-visual services to the twelve schools in the union and operates in-service training programs for teachers. The center houses a large collection of books, films, filmstrips, tapes, records, transparencies, and other instructional aids. Many of these are produced by the I.M.C. staff with the new equipment nowavailable. Several W.H.S. students have become actively involved in the work by assisting in the office and in the darkroom. The little blue delivery van of the LM.C. has become a familiar sight around our school. 25 Watch the fingers! 67 iSS; FfPSjS! i?!' swi r ,E5s:« !■■ ' -ccSS? A large part of our graduating class will go on to further schooling. Yet for some, this is the final year of their formal education. Marriage and the armed services will replace col- lege life. The four years of schooling at Winnacunnet have given us an education not only from our studies and books but also from the people we have met and the lasting friendships we have ac- quired. In the future we will realize how much these few years have influenced our lives. 28 Barbara Thompson President, Class of 1967 OFFICERS PRESIDENT: Barbara Thompson VICE PRES.: Robert Freeman SECRETARY: Janet Pingree TREASURER: Kathie Andrews ADVISORS Mr. Lavallee Miss Curry BACK ROW Duane Kimball Ken Cutler Pam Whitworth Maryann Ross Peter Bushold Robert Freeman FRONT ROW Jill Femald Janet Savage June Charters Barbara Thompson Janet Pingree Kathie Andrews COUNCIL SHARI LYNNE AJEMIAN North Hampton Likes: Folk music, guitar, sincerity, Diego, Boston, Nov. 5, 1966, ee Cummings, Gib- ran, impulsiveness Dislikes: Jacks, conformity, phonies, state of the world, war, triviality, waiting, people who merely exist Whim: To be free as a bird Ambition: teacher, Vista W.H.S. All too soon we were approaching that glorious day. With hearts filled with memories, we look back on years of sorrows and successes, of frustrations and friendships. When September, '63 arrived, we were suddenly exposed to the fast-moving world of high school. Despite malevolent assistance of upperclassmen, we, as freshmen, somehow survived the first be- wildering weeks at Winnacunnet. The unfortunate death of President Kennedy temporarily disrupted school life, but at the same time gave us the unity that only grief can create. With time however, we found ourselves adjusting to student government, mid-years, crowded lunches, and the pressures of being underclassmen. Winnacarnival was a new and exciting experience and with each event we sensed a growing spirit and pride in our class. Susan Blythe was selected princess and as the week progressed we did our best to bring a victory to the Class of '67. As sophomores, we returned with a feeling of confidence and enthusiasm. Class rings made us feel sophisticated, while the Christmas Dance, our first big responsibility, greatly helped to unify the class. During Winnacarnival, we set out to try our luck at upsettingthe upperclassmen, and hoped to see our princess, Linda Lewis, be crowned queen. Apparently the goal was too high, but we had a lot of fun trying. The junior year proved to be the busiest and most profitable of our high school career. In the fall, we solicited ads for the football and basketball programs, and set up concessions at home games. The year seemed to be full of victories. Who will ever forget the day the Blue Hawk” died, or the night the Ship was Sunk at the Portsmouth Tourney? Without a doubt, however, the event that made our junior year so memorable was winning the 1966 Class L Basketball Championship. Those of us who were at the final game in Manchester re- member the exciting way in which the Warriors fought for first place and their well deserved title of New Hampshire State Champs. The novelty of the year, and a first at Winnacunnet was the Powder Puff football game. Never in the history of W.H.S. did Tuck Field see as much action as that fall afternoon. As both teams, the Jubilant Juniors and the Stupendous Seniors, battled for victory, the sideliners screamed for no mercy. Early in the game a shocked senior team realized the uselessness of fighting. The victorious Class of '67 once again demonstrated that, 'We Try Harder! The second semester brought on more responsibilities. We put up a valiant fight to become Winnacarnival champs, but unfortunately were unable to crown our princess, Judy Soucy, queen. The prom, Garden of Dreams , was one of the loveliest ever. With the help of our advisors, Miss Curry and Mr. Lavallee, we were able to transform the cafetorium into a beautiful setting for the big- gest event of the year. To end a perfect evening, June Charters was chosen Queen, and her Princesses were Jan Savage and Jan Blatchford. Thanks to our class officers, our advisors, and Joe Fossule, we were able to make our junior year rewarding, prosperous, and a lot of fun. Our final year brought about a common understanding of the pressures we were all facing-whether it concerned being accepted at a college or securing a job for after graduation. With autumn came the first of the closed senior parties. Who can ever forget Strait Jacket and the cry, Give her the ax ? And remember the Computer Party and the surprised faces when we met our ideal dates? The 1967 Winnacarnival brought our long- awaited victory with Janet Pingree being crowned queen. We had succeeded in becoming the number one class in spirit, sportsmanship, and participation. With the end of the year approaching, we found ourselves preparing for graduation. We reflected, for a time,on our years spent at W.H.S. but realized that the future holds much excitement. So,World, we hope you are ready, for we now present to you, the Class of 1967! 85 BEST LOOKING BEST ALL AROUND David Burbine-Judy Soucie Sue Blythe-Steve Batchelder SCHOOL SUPPORTERS MOST DEPENDABLE Bob Freeman-Barbara Thompson Steve Batchelder-Sue Blythe MOST STUDIOUS Pam Daly-Tom Hartnett MOST ATHLETIC Jan Blatchford-John Hopkins CUTEST 17 Sue Blythe-John Vallier MOST TALENTED MOST TALKATIVE Sue Blythe-Peter Jautaikis Charlie Claverie-Barbara Thompson SHYEST BEST DANCERS Alan Robinson-Jeneen Quinlan 68 MaryAnn Ross-Peter Ross CLASS WIT CLASS SUPPORTER Nadia Margolis-Charlie Claverie BEST DRESSED Mark Savage-Paula Wanzer MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Jill Fernald-Bob Freeman 89 Tom Hartnett-Nadia Margolis CLASS Freshman Nancy Powell Peter Bushold June Charters Mary Ann Ross Class Officers Sophomore Nancy Powell John Hopkins Janet Pingree Dale Drummond Junior John Vallier Barbara Thompson Jan Savage Kathie Andrews Senior Barb Thompson Bob Freeman Jan Pingree Kathie Andrews Student Council Freshman Sophomore Ed Hess Susan Boothby Tim McHenry Barbara Thompson Susan Boothby June Charters Tim McHenry Doug Silver State Student Council President Steve Batchelder Junior Doug Silver Shari Ajemian Meredy Hall Shelley Luck Bob Freeman Vice-president Steve Batchelder Secretary Sue Boothby Senior Peppa Barnaby Rod Blake Shari Ajemian Shelley Luck President Steve Batchelder Secretary Sue Boothby Treasurer Greg Jardis JUNIOR COUNCIL SENIOR COUNCIL Carol Stevenson Tim McHenry Judy Soucy Jill Fernald Shelley Luck Charlie Claverie Susan Blythe John Hopkins Mike Hambleton June Charters Pam Whitworth Jill Fernald Ken Cutler Jan Savage Judy Soucy Mary Ann Ross Duane Kimball Peter Bushold 90 Phillips Exeter Summer School Nadia Margolis Nasson College Summer Program Nadia Margolis LOG National Honor Society Members Tom Hartnett Rod Blake Susan Boothby Earl Richardson June Charters Jill Fernald Janet Blatchford Ken Cutler Sandy Larsen George Hammond Kris Hinkley Kathy Knowles Sally Clark Maureen Mullen Dave Crovetti Pam Daly Bob Freeman Josephine Gagnon Mike Hambleton Shelley Luck Cathy McEachern Cindy Stiles Nadia Margolis Mike Schwotzer National Merit Letters of Commendation Cathy McEachern Maureen Mullen Pam Daly Tom Hartnett Citizenship Conference at Tufts Shelley Luck Bob Freeman Girls' State Peppa Barnaby Shelley Luck Boys' State Mike Hambleton Jr.-Sr. Awards Program-Boston Museum Sue Blythe All-State Basketball All-State Football Bill Ladd Mike Hambleton Tom Hartnett Jim Branham Steve Batchelder John Hopkins St. Paul's Program of Advanced Studies D.A.R. Excellent pitching by Greg Pickering and Bill McLane, a tight defense, clutch hitting, and hustling team spirit defeated Lebanon, Monadnock, and finally Somersworth. Winnacunnet pulled the biggest upset of the baseball year when it walked off with the top honors and brought the 1966 Class I baseball crown home. 110 1966 1 1 TRACK 66 The 1966 Spring Trackteam had a highly successful season by finishing second in the Class I” State Track Meet and qualifying Bill Ladd, Steve Dutton, and Jim Sicard for competition in the New England Track Meet. Outstanding performances were turned in by Peter Dineen in the dashes, and the entire ag- grigation of distance men, including the Sicard brothers, Edward and Jim, the Dutton brothers, Steve and Brad, Bob MacClements, Sheridan Dodge, Harry Fowler, and John Yeaton. Bill Ladd, Jody Pelczar, and Steve Philbrick all proved that they had what it took to be good hurlers. With Pete Jautaikis, Jim Sicard, and Brad Dutton working hard on the pole vault, it appeared that the season would be highly successful. Although the field events were not our strongest points, Mark Savage proved his ability in the discus while his younger brother, Richard, continuously put his ability to good use by putting the shot over 42 feet. Several boys established new school records this season: Steve Dutton One mile Edward Sicard Two mile William Ladd High hurdles William Ladd Low hurdles James Sicard 800 yd. run Each year an individual trophy is awarded to the team's high scorer. The high scorer this year was Bill Ladd with an amazing 148 points. In the distant second was Mike Hambleton with 72 1 4 points followed by Captain Ed Sicard with 71 1 4 points. The returning team should be the strongest squad we have had, since only two key men were lost. KNEELING: J. Sicard; H. Fowler; P. Dineen; E. Sicard; B. MacClements; S. Dutton. ROW 2: J. Yeaton; B. Coupled with this fact were the encouraging efforts of many of our Sophomore and Junior performers who should provide us with a potent, experienced group to lead the way next fall. Junior boys who did an outstanding job this fall were Henry Fuller, J. D. Promising Sophomores who played well for the first time at Varsity level were boys like George Allen, Frank Bajowski, Jerry Stellmach, Dick Kidd, Wayne Lloyd, Steve Batchelder, and Bill Pur slow. Sorely missed will be graduating Seniors, who have provided us with many exciting moments on the playing field, such as Tri-Captains Mike Hambleton, Jim Branham, and Bill Ladd, and Tom Hartnett, John Ford, Charles Allen, Dave Wilbur, and Doug Silver. John Vallier saw no action due to a pre-game injury in the scrimmage with Amesbury. All of these boys have played four years of football at Winnacunnet. The defending New Hampshire State Class L Basketball Champions swept to another highly successful season finishing the year with an outstanding 18-4 record, and winding up in third place in the New Hampshire State Class L Basketball ranks. The Warriors lost only to Portsmouth (twice), Nashua, and Dover. They held the distinction of being the top Class L defensive team in the state, as they held their op- ponents to a low average of 51.1 points per game, while they averaged 63.6 The Warriors were led by a starting five consisting of Captain John Vallier (senior) and John Hopkins (senior) at the guard positions; Steve Batchelder (senior) and Steve Morin (junior) at forwards; Dick Kidd (sophomore) at center; while sixth man Dick Sav- age (junior) alternated at forward and center positions. Other members of the team who saw a great deal of action included Juniors Chris Bunce, Bob Schaake, Tom Boynton, Tom Russell, John Yeaton, Don Frost, and Jeff Luce. Winnacunnet opened the season by winning their first four ball games before being defeated by Portsmouth. The Warriors bounced back to win two more before Nashua edged them by two points. Two more victories were followed by a nine point loss to Dover. A second four game winning streak was halted again by Portsmouth; this time by a six point margin. That was the last Warrior loss of the regular season as they went on to win their last six contests, including sweet revenge over Dover and Nashua, two Class L powerhouses. Seniors John Vallier, John Hopkins, and Steve Batchelder enjoyed the best seasons of their high school career. Captain Vallier was the play maker, the top foul shooter, and leader in assists. John Hopkins was the leading scorer and sparkplug of the team. Steve Batchelder led the team in rebounding and in field goal shooting percentage. These are three boys who will be difficult to replace. BASKETBALL May I cut in? Hot potato! Two more points 131 Once upon a time . . . He stands out in a crowd March 15, Durham. The fighting Winnacunnet Warriors went down to defeat at the hands of a spirited Dover Green Wave basketball team in one of the most exciting and thrilling games ever wit- nessed in New Hampshire State Tournament action. The Warriors fought back from an early 11-2 deficit, but from the second period to the end of the game the lead fluctuated back and forth with neither team being more than 3 points ahead at any time. Dover had a chance to win the game in reg- ulation play but missed two foul shots with 2 sec- onds remaining to send the game into overtime. In the first overtime period the Warriors' chances for victory were seriously impaired by the loss of Dick Kidd and Bob Schaake on fouls. But the Winnacunnet boys were not ready to give up without a fight and managed to tally 5 points to keep the game tied at the end of the first over- time, 60-60. 132 Take off Who needs the floor? After a minute and a half of the second over- time period, Captain John Vallier also fouled out. The Warriors were outscored 8-3, and went down to a 68-63 defeat. John Hopkins led the Warrior scoring with 23 points. Dick Kidd tallied 20 points and came up with an outstanding rebounding game. John Vallier sparked the Warriors throughout the con- test, starred on defense and chipped in with 9 points on offense. Steve Batchelder also scored 9 points. Though the Warriors were eliminated from further competition they were not defeated. They never gave up during the game - even when every- thing appeared to be going against them. They played a courageous ball game, demonstrating spirit, hustle, and aggressiveness.. Winnacunnet High School can indeed be proud of the efforts of the 1966-1967 basketball team. Out of reach. One of the highlights of the season was the dual meet victory over Portsmouth mid-way through the season. The outcome of this meet was decided in the final event, the relay race. Outstanding performances were contributed this year by captain Mike Hambleton in the dashes; Bill Ladd, who finished second in the hurdles and third in the 50 yard dash in the State Meet; Chris Augusta, who tied the school high jump record with a height of 5'10 ; Henry Fuller, one of the fastest 300 yard dash men in the state; and Bob Mac Clements, who is the backbone of the distance runners. Most of all, it is an organization in which the opinions of the students may be expressed, there- by representing the student body. This past year, the Student Council has sponsored an underprivileged orphan from Oklahoma. Her name is Barbara Jumper. She is a Cherokee Indian and comes from a large family which the father and mother are not able to support. Shari Ajemian serves as our cor- respondent. The Student Council wants to sponsor the A.F.S. Bus Stop here again during the summer in hopes that it will be as successful as last year. The Forum, however, has always opened the doors of these activities to members of the community as well as the Winna- cunnet student body. The Forum, in an effort to bring to this community the cultural advantages of central New England, has always been willing to risk its very existence to complete its objectives. It has sponsored lectures by Bernard Hiatt, director at the Theatre by the Sea; Professor Daggett, who spoke on Patriotism and Vietnam ; Sgt. Jassmond, U.S.A.F., who discussed Missiles and Manned Aircraft ; and Harold Whittaker, who introduced Metaphysics and Philosophy at the High School Level . The Forum made two visits to the Theatre by the Sea to view current productions, and it also sponsored A Christmas Carol for the benefit of this area. All newspapers have the same purpose: to inform people of what is going on around them. Our newspaper, The Smoke Signal”, does just this. The students on the staff report on sports, dances, and other social events held at the school. Some of the regular features of The Smoke Signal are Watch on Winnacunnet , a column about the student body itself, Dear Winny , a column that gives advice to the forlorn and love- lorn, and a Sell, Swap, or Buy section where advertisements can be purchased for a nickle. The paper also gives students an opportunity to work on a newspaper, a chance to write, rewrite, and set up copy. BAND FIRST ROW; L-R: S. Larson, B. Shindledecker, B. Coombs, J. Halioran, B. The boys in the Audio-Visual Club provide such services as transporting A-V equipment to any teacher at any time, operating all A-V equipment, preparing transparencies and or copies of material for teachers, setting up public address systems, amplifiers, and record players for assemblies, dances, and social activities. The boys in the Audio-Visual Club must be conscientious, highly trained, and courteous. They must be willing to give up their study hall period to devote their time and talents to service for the school. 150 POSTER CLUB The Poster Club is primarily concerned with promoting school spirit. The club makes posters for any activity that needs them. At their weekly meetings members work together designing and making posters so the club can meet its obligations to the other clubs and groups which request the posters. The club was originally set up to honor the boys who endured the hardships of some sport for at least two seasons. To be eligible for the Varsity Club, a boy must have earned at least two varsity letters from any of the sports. Besides this, the boys must also survive the initiation which is held three times a year. This initiation is made up by the members of the club. There are now 20 active members. This past year, the Varsity Club held a Victory Dance after the Lebonan football game. The money earned by the Varsity Club is used to buy trophies for the Sports Banquet which is held in the spring. 152 PEP CLUB FIRST ROW L-R: G. Jardis, President, J. Pingree, Vice-president, J. An essential part of the office and library is the work of the aides. Donating study periods, the aides perform routine tasks, leaving the librarians and secretaries free for more technical aspects of their work. The biggest contribution of the library aides is the running of the paperback book store. The store provides a ready source of materials suitable for both school work and personal pleasure. This factor will enable him or her to obtain a head start in the teaching profession. During the past year, the club sold candy canes at Christmas, held a dance in January, and sold lunch at the Winnacarnival. With the money made from these different events, two scholarships of $50 each were given to two participating members of the club. Each spring, the Senior members of the club have a chance to visit one of the schools in the supervisory union for one day. They attend the grade level in which they are in- terested, and observe the students. The club has had various speakers who give the aspiring students an insight into 155 teaching and what they might expect. FOLKSINGING CLUB Seated L. to R.: R. Blake, L. Mako, J. Ford, D. Drummond, W. The club consists of sixteen girls with leadership ability who are assisting in various aspects of the physical education classes. Before becoming an active member of the club each girl is required to pass both a written and an oral examination. Once a member, a girl relenquishes her study halls to assist in class by taking atten- dance, checking showers, leading exercises and demonstrating various activities. It is hoped that by performing these tasks the girls will not only become more familiar with the physical education program but will also become more socially, emotionally, mentally, and physically fit. It is the desire of this service organization to benefit all the girls at Winnacunnet.
