Text from Pages 1 - 176 of the 1966 volume:

Listen to the Exhortation of the Dawn! Look to this Day! For it is Life, The very Life of Life. In its brief course lie all the verities And Realities of your Existence; The Bliss of Growth, The Glory of Action, The Splendor of Beauty; For Yesterday is but a Dream, And Tomorrow is only a Vision; But Today well lived Makes every Yesterday a Dream of Happiness, And every Tomorrow a Vision of Hope, Look well therefore to this Day! Such is the Salutation of the Dawn. (Essay-Salutation of the Dawn-Sanskrit) i 2 YEARBOOK STAFF Editor-in-Chief .... Assistant Editor . . . Business Manager. . . Advertising Editor . . Call Itis with sincere pride and profound gratitude that we, the grad- uating class, dedicate the 1966 SACHEM to Mr. David O'Haire. Mr. O'Haire has not been merely a teacher at W.H.S. He has transcended these boundaries and been much more to us. Giving advice, a helping hand, or a listening ear, he has become a personal friend to each and every one of us. It was in the classroom, of course, that his unique presentations enabled us to view mathe- matics with the greatest understanding. However, it has been through Mr. O'Haire himself that we have learned to view life with greater understanding and enjoyment. The class of 1966 would like to extend a hand to him in return for all he has done for us in saying with deepest sincerity, Thank you, Mr. O'Haire. 4 We, the class of 1966, dedicate this page in our yearbook to the memory of Carol Millet and Bob Trofatter. Their lives, though very brief, gave lasting meaning to all of us who knew them. To one view your graduation marks the end of a course of study. I believe the word commencement to be more meaningful in that it identifies a new start, a dawn, with its promise of a future. I congratulate each graduate for significant accomplishments and extend the sincere wish that you will consider the look forward well worth the risk. Jason E. Boynton Superintendent of Schools 6 Message to Seniors: We are reading the first verse of the first chapter of a book whose pages are infinite ... - Unknown Your education, personal convictions and sum total of your existence to this point in life will-to some degree-determine your immediate and future successes. If you are to continue to grow and mature, then your experiences to this point represent but a few pages in your life. Your yearbook message proclaims that a day well lived brings about hope for tomorrow. A day well lived is one fraught with discovery, creativity, successes - and even failures - but one where we have in some way served others. To each Senior I extend wishes that each of your tomorrows hold a promise of personal satisfaction. Daniel S. Maloney 7 Principal THE WINNACUNNET SCHOOL BOARD 4 D. Malcolm Hamilton Hampton Carroll L. Zitrick School Nurse The graduating class of 1966 would like to devote this page of our yearbook to Mr. Bruce Russell in honor of his forty-three years as a teacher and an administrator at both Winnacunnet High School and the Hampton Academy High School. Upon his retirement this year from the staff of Winnacunnet we would like to extend our sincerest gratitude for his many devoted years to education in the Hampton area and to express our best wishes to Mr. Russell for happiness in the future. 26 SENIORS 27 The graduates in the class of 66 will control our country's future, as will all other high school graduates. We must be con- cerned, capable and mature enough to cope with situations and prob- lems that we will face in future years. If all students use their high school years to develop their re- sponsibility, maturity and intelligence, they will lead a more pros- perous, happy and successful life. High school is the doorway to your future, you may or may not pass through, it's your life and your choice. Remember, your high school years will regulate your future. Therefore, utilize your high school years, they are more important and significant than most of us realize. Our fate and that of the nation's is dependent upon us. We must be prepared to meet the challenge--Whatever it may be. No previous class in the history of Winnacunnet High School has accomplished as much or contributed as greatly to the success and development of W.H.S. as has the class of '66. And, certainly, no other class ever possessed as much potential. As freshmen in the autumn of 1962, we felt somewhat lost in our new surroundings. It took us the greater portion of our first year to get our bearings. Our first president, Bob Barwick, undertook the difficult task of unifying the various elements represented by the different members of our class. When our second year commenced, however, we were ready and waiting to leave many indelible marks on W.H.S. The most prominent member of our class that first year was probably Greg Pickering. De- spite the fact that Winnacunnet began playing Class L competition that year, Greg became the first freshman everto start on the varsity basketball team. Who can ever forget the many thrills of that first Class L tourney when we came within three points of defeating Bishop Bradley? As sophomores we elected Link Claverie to our class presidency. It was at this time that the Class of '66 began to roll. We began at last to fulfill the great potential that had always been ours. Various members of our class took an active part in the creation of the Chain Party-a party that has lasted for three years. We ordered our class rings, elected our first class council, and started the first of many money-making projects which would eventually place us on the road to financial security. Our sophomore beach party was an appropriate conclusion to a prosperous year. Though plagued with a few problems, our class enjoyed a successful Junior year. Ernie Blanchard proved to be a capable administrator as he guided us through ten very memorable months. Our treasury continued to grow, as did our class spirit. We came extremely close to winning the Winnacarnival, and were exceptionally delighted when Greg Pickering was elected President of the Student Council. Greg, as co-captain, also led the Warriors to second place in the state hoop standings. Other members of the Junior Class were also successful in winning student government positions. Our Junior Prom, Stairway to the Stars, brought our third year in high school to a spectacular conclusion as Sharon O’Connor was crowned queen. Our Senior year began on a sour note when our new president, Ralph Scannell, transferred to another school. John McMahon, however, took up the slack and cheerfully led us on toward new and unconquered goals. Conquered these goals were! In football, the terrors of the grudge game selected Miss Janine Hobbs as Football Queen, and then they proceeded to scalp the Exeter Blue Hawks for the first time in four years. Three distinguished members of our class won berths on the All-State football team. At the Christmas basketball tourney, the Warriors sank the Clipper Ship as it had never been sunk before. Five senior girls were named to the cheerleading squad, and 12 more members of our class were named to the National Honor Society, thus bringing our class membership to seventeen. Our class treasury bulged to the largest in W.H.S. history. Two of our class members, John McMahon and Nancy Hume, added to our class prestige by winning respectively the Voice of Democracy contest and the D.A.R. Good Citizenship award. Mr. O'Haire and Mrs. Brown, our class advisors, gave us superb guidance and prepared us for every situation which arose. We began our senior year at W.H.S. with the sincere desire to be the most remembered class in school history. By every indication, the Class of '66 will never be forgotten! We leave Win- nacunnet High School satisfied with our achievements, proud of our class, and confident of our future. 82 BABY PICTURES 1. Ralph Littlefield 2. Sandra Webb 3. A1 Gauron 4. Ken Nelson 5.
