Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1961 volume:

The years we look Back at with pride Seem but a moment In the eternity of Time and the river. I Principal’s Message “When you are an anvil, hold you still; When you are a hammer, strike your fill,” These lines, written three hundred and seventy years ago by John Florio, depict the action and passiveness of our lives within the un- changeable movement of time. A balance must exist whereby we possess the stoic qualities to stand straight against adversities, and the latent power to strike when oppor- tunity confronts us. The movement of time is constant; thus you make your mark in this world with every response to life itself. Dedication Preparing classes in Latin and English, assisting yearbook staffs, and counseling seniors have occupied much of Mrs. Jean Perkins’ time during the past ten years. Besides adding a three year Latin course to the curriculum, she has helped us toward better communication through emphasis on preciseness and conciseness. As a tribute to Mrs. Perkins, the class of 1961 wishes to dedicate this Sachem to her. 5 f'fSail on!’ it says, 'sail on, ye statley ships! And with vour floating bridge the river span; Be Mine to guard this light from all eclipse, Be yours to bring man nearer unto man!’ ” Longfellow 7 DANIEL S. MALONEY Principal B.S.. M.S. The responsibilities of the Senior Council have grown proportionately to the size of the senior class. As it is no longer possible to have frequent meetings of the entire class, each senior homeroom elects a boy and a girl to represent them in this intermediate governing body. The job of tbe council member is two-fold: first, to express and support the desires and needs of the majority of students in his homeroom, and second, to inform them of the council’s decisions. With recommendations from the senior class advisors, Mrs. Perkins and Mr. Mackey, the Senior Council has aspired to give the senior class the best representative government. The class officers were Susan Scott, president; Betsy Patterson, vice-president; Lynda Barnaby, secretary; and Patricia Coulter, treasurer. The advisors were Mrs. Junkins and Miss Lamphere. Our first class activity was the presentation of the Freshman Frolics. The theme evolved around a wishing well. The dance, a big success, proved that our class was going to be one that would accomplish whatever it decided to do. In our sophomore year we were joined by the students from Seabrook as we moved into the new Winnacunnet High School. The class officers, Robert Gunther, president; Carolyn Alford, vice- president; Carole Harding, secretary; and Eric Linscott, treasurer; and the advisors, Mrs. Lane and Mr. Linscott, led us in our money- making sale of the Winnacunnet Warrior pins and our preparation for our two dances, “Winter Wonderland” and “April in Paris.” We were the first class to order the new Winnacunnet High School rings, and we chose them with great care. The rings, which have a round blue stone, represent the four towns which make up Winna- cunnet and the four branches of knowledge taught there. 59 ( lass History Our junior year was one of triumph. We beat the challenging sophomores in a sports quiz, and we proved that a junior prom, if run efficiently, could be a money-making activity. The theme was “My Blue Heaven” and the cafetorium ceiling was decorated with a net from which many, many stars hung. A fountain placed on the stage completed the decorations and made those who at- tended the prom feel as if they were actually dancing in a garden. The “Sadie Hawkins” dance was another junior triumph. Class officers were Robert Gunther, president; Kathleen Ford, vice-president; Carolyn Brown, secretary; and Peter Mudge, treasurer. The advisors for the year were Mrs. Lane, Mr. Linscott, and Mr. Mackey, who took Mr. Linscott’s place. At last, we’re seniors. The year started by our advisors, Mrs. Perkins and Mr. Mackey, calling a class meeting so that candidates for class officers might state their qualifications. When the votes had been cast and counted, Peter Mudge became president, Mary Lewis, secretary; Carolyn Brown, vice-president; and James Quin- nev, treasurer. We quickly organized and were able to present two dances, Indian Powwow and the Football Dance. Sandra Hall was chosen Miss Football at the latter. After Christmas vacation, we all worked together to win the Winnacarnival. Many cold hours of fun were spent sculpturing the Indian which depicted a graduating senior. Class day brought much enjoyment and recalled many pleasant memories. The day was climaxed by a banquet and a dance. At the banquet many humorous and fond memories were recalled by the class history and gifts. Glimpses into the future were seen via the class prophecy. Graduation was our last activity as an entire class. After Susan Scott, salutatorian. and Carolyn Brown, valedictorian, had spoken, diplomas were granted. Then, amidst tears and laughter, we turned in our caps and gowns and left for our graduation parties. 60 He wonders whitherward it flows; And fain would follow where it goes, To the wide world, that shall erelong Be filled with his melodious song.” Longfellow 63 FIRST ROW—N. Mathletes In its two years of existence, Winnacunnet’s math team has come from nothing to a club which this year has ten members and has attended four meets. Its growth can be attributed to the assistance of our two advisors, Miss Lamphere and Mr. Geers. In competition a team consists of five members who are given four three-problem sets which must be solved in a given time. The team is credited points for correct problems. After this the entire team is given a team problem to solve together. The team hopes to have continued growth and success in future vears. Dramatics The Winnacunnet Players, organized by Mr. Neal Wiggin, entered The Shirkers, a one-act play, in the New Hampshire State Drama Festival at Durham on April 1, 1961. This was the first year they had entered the drama festival, and their cast included Harold Inglis, William Barwick, and Elizabeth Wright. The group pre- sented for the fall play Dial ‘M’ for Murder, a three act mystery drama, and for the spring play Seven Nuns at Las Vegas was staged. This organization hopes to make the theater arts in high school an educational activity, not a profit making club. It recognizes the relationships between the theater and literature and plans to broaden our cultural understandings through the selection and presentation of good plays. The Junior Historians wish to increase their knowledge of this area and to record their findings in the form of pamphlets to be distributed among interested students and adults. The Junior Historians took field trips to such places as Salem and Boston to study the early history of our country. These field trips enabled them to study colonial history more intensively, than could be possible during a history class. FUTURE SECRETARIES FIRST ROW—M. Perkins, A. Eaton, T. Cole, President; C. The Business Department is an integral part of any high school. We at Winnacunnet High School are fortunate to have a Future Secretaries of America Club which operates under the supervision of Miss Alice Downing and Mrs. Carol Newport. The club fries to give girls interested in business a broader understanding of the problems they will face when they enter the business world. Among its activities, the club sponsored a talk by Miss Lois Batchelder. a graduate of the class of I960, who is presently employed as a secretary in Attorney William Dunfey’s office. Additional activities during the year included movies, field trips, and speakers. 101 Tennis Club Last fall, with Mr. Mackey as our club’s sponsor, we learned the basic rules and principles of tennis playing. This winter we were able to play indoor tennis only twice, but with warmer weath- er in the spring, we plan to play on avail- able courts once a week until the end of the year. Mr. Mackey. N. Today, hunting and fishing are two of the most popular sports. To the members of the club, the challenge of hunting and fishing brings a feeling of satisfaction and a moment of achievement. In any field or stream, one can find one of the members applying what he has learned about nature, equip- ment. and safety. Good hunting! A. King. W. Barry, D. Simmons, P. Bourgcault, A. Brown, D. Mac- Science Club With the discoveries of missiles, electronic devices, and advanced medicines, a demand has grown for capable scientists. To promote and foster creative ideas in every branch of science is the purpose of the Science Club. Its aim is to stimulate those who will prepare for a scientific career and to allow those with scientific interest to expand on their ideas. Today and in the future our program is and will continue to be dependent on the advance- ment of science. There is no better training ground for tomorrow’s scientists than in a group of interested students. A. Larrabee, Mr. Grover, N. Parr, R. Garland. Future Homemakers of America The F. H. A. Club is designed to help oth- ers. This year their activities included: mak- ing and distributing Thanksgiving baskets, a Christmas party at the orphanage in Ports- mouth with other visits to follow in the spring, and a combination fashion and vaude- ville show in the spring.
