I will not let thee go except thou bless me. Genesis 32:26 DEDICATION We respectfully dedicate this 1968 Morning Star to Mr. Leonard Doerksen whose well prepared and provoca¬ tive lectures have been greatly appreciated and whose whole-hearted dedication to the school has contributed greatly to making our school years here worthwhile. Dick Herbert Giesbrecht Cornell Unruh Walfried Dirks John M. Thiessen Dear Students: I balked at the idea of writing this message. What have I got to say and will anyone read this message if I do find something? Like Moses, I wanted to pass the buck. Since Aaron, however, isn’t available, I’ll give you a little glimpse into my heart. It’s been an exciting year for me — grappling to define in practical terms the purpose of this school — debating how to achieve it — seeking God ' s way in difficult decisions. It ' s been exciting to see and hear of you in action — getting beat in volleyball by the ‘softies ' of the Homemakers Club — maiming your teacher in basketball — producing well at examination time — hosting the Missionary Conference so graciously — mixing with the people you meet on deputation trips — sharing your faith with others — enthusiastically participating in the life of the school — beginning a newspaper. I get the impression that you are having a meaningful year. I thank God for your initiative, responsiveness and growth, for your dedicated staff working almost around the clock to meet the challenges you throw at them and to threw some at you as well. I challenge you, also, to live a full and abundant life as you leave the WBI this spring, living your faith and sharing it in the power of Jesus Christ. A. D. Kroeker, Chairman, Winkler Bible Institute Committee COMPLIMENTS OF Loewen Funeral Chapels Ltd. WINNIPEG STEINBACH WALTER KLASSEN R. LOEWEN Serving Urban and Rural Families of all Faiths 4 I ' riminii s m A writer has succinctly stated: “Education begins with discipline and ends in self-discipline.” The inference is that knowledge must be interpreted and applied in terms of life and that in the application of these truths influence human behaviour, mold personality and give direction of life. The precept is applicable to Christian education and the training which you have received. The acquisition and acceptance of biblical knowledge alone is not enough; it must be applied to all areas of the Christian life. By this process, the whole personality, conduct and outlook on life will be affected. Self-discipline and obedience to the leading of the Holy Spirit are the prime prerequisites of the scripturally-oriented life. Motivated by love to God and fellowman, the fruition of the consecrated life will, un¬ doubtedly bring forth the spiritual graces, Phil. 1:10, 11. REV. JOHN H. GOOSSEN B.Sc., B.Th. Principal Pauline Epistles Acts Minor Prophets Church History German For all of us this has been a memorable year. The new Men’s Residence became a reality. The Missionary Conference and Youth Retreat have left indelible im¬ pressions. The Ontario Deputation and Camp Ames Retreat plus the many other activities have been experi¬ ences which will long remain in our memories. The Yearbook Committee has endeavoured to conserve some of these pleasant memories for us. For their splendid efforts, we heartily commend them. — J. H. Goossen 5 MR. LEONARD DOERKSEN B.A., B.Th. Registrar Old Testament Bible Evangelism False Cults Recreational Leadership Life of Christ “Men are God’s methods. We are looking for better methods, but God is looking for better men.” (E. M. Bounds) God has chosen to work through human vessels. I cannot afford to invest my life in every passing whim and fancy. I have but one life to invest. “Lord, make me an instrument of Thy peace; Where there is hatred, let me sow love; Where there is injury, pardon; Where there is doubt, faith; Where there is despair, hope; Where there is darkness, light; Where there is sadness, joy.” (Francis of Assisi) 6 MR. JOHN FROESE B.A., B.Th. Christian Service Chairman Church History Mennonite History Major Prophets General Epistles Principles of Teaching Youth stands at the cross-roa ' ds of life. Basically, the Bible recognizes only two ways — Behold I set before you the way of life and the way of death.” Jeremiah 21:8b We have chosen the way of life — let this be a settled matter and let us con¬ tinue on in this way. But,” we sometimes complain, “this way of life offers so many opportunities, I don’t know what to do!” First of all, thank God when you do have many opportunities. To grumble about opportunities as though they were liabilities is sin. Much rather we want to pray one for another, “that the Lord . . . God may shew us the way wherein we may walk, and the thing that we should do.” Jeremiah 42:3. 7 MR. HAROLD WIENS B.A. Music Director Conducting History of Music Voice Harmony Music Theory Introduction to Music Although it has the purpose of reaching man with a message from God, church music in itself can not make him a Christian, nor can it cause him to worship. How¬ ever, when music is utilized by the Holy Spirit, it becomes a vehicle of the truth of salvation, which, when responded to by man, will result in making him a Christian. Likewise, music is able to induce man’s worship to God. 8 MR. DON WIEBE B.A., B.Th. Academic Dean Theology Christian Ethics Hermeneutics Christian Education It is senseless to ask how far my action reaches, and where God’s grace begins; there is no common borderline; what concerns me alone, before I bring something about, is my action, and what concerns me alone, when the action is successfully done, is God’s grace. The one is no less real than the other, and neither is a part cause. God and man do not divide the government of the world between them; man’s action is enclosed in God’s action, but it is still real action. (Buber) Therefore my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for God is at work in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. I am sure I can speak for everyone of the students in saying that this year has been a pleasant experi¬ ence for us working both with the older students and the faculty. For those of us who are returning next year I hope we will make the new students feel at home as we felt. A word of encouragement for both the second class and the graduating class. Most students came to the Bible Institute to study. However, our training would not be complete if it were not possible for us to apply our know ledge. Sure they act as “feelers” in the nervous system of the school, thus aiding the council in providing opportunities for the applica¬ tion of knowledge. The council has attempted to maintain a close relationship between the staff and students, provide for social welfare, and private spiritual growth. We as council thank the students for their co-operation in upholding the principles and spirit of W.B.I. We also thank God for guidance and for definite answers to prayer which we have ex¬ perienced. May God continue to use the Winkler Bible Institute for the promotion of His Kingdom. The Christian Service Committee this year has tried to get more out of its sheltered environment and get into the world to witness. This has been ac¬ complished somewhat by tract distribution. Groups have also gone to the hospital, both Heritage Manor and the Salem Home for the Aged quite regularly. The Good News Clubs have been enjoyed to quite an extent by those teaching and children have been brought to the Lord. Sometimes groups have been asked to sing at various occasions in Sunday Services and Young People’s meetings. One problem I’ve felt with myself and believe others is ‘what is our motive’. Is this just something to ease our conscience or is it really a service for Christ? It is my prayer that our motives were always Christ-centered and not self-centered. Ron Braun Chairman 27 Left to Right: Carolyn Goossen; Anne Wiebe; Irene Rempel; Ted Goossen, Chair¬ man; Mr. J. Goossen, Staff Advisor. The Literary Committee has had the privilege of starting the Bible School’s first intramural newspaper, “School Daze”. Teachers and students were given the opportunity to express their views on a variety of topics. We believe the paper has helped students develop literary creativity and has discovered talent which has been lying dormant in many of the students. We have also had the opportunity of presenting a major drama in March. The drama we chose was “The Carpenter”. The aim of the drama was to give students an opportunity to develop their dramatic ability and to bring honor and glory to His name. We, as a committee, would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere thanks to the students and teachers who contributed so much of their time and energy in the work of the newspaper and drama. A very special “thank you” to Mr. Goossen, our advisor, for his many helpful suggestions. Ted Goossen Chairman 28 Left to right: Ruth Dyck; Mr. H. Wiens, Staff Advisor; Peter Loewen; Fred Dyck. Seated — Mary Dueck, Chairman. “Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” Our school could hardy exist without the continual ring of music in its halls. Many times our most personal feelings can be expressed most ably through some form of music. As Music Committee, our duties have been to organize chapel music, take care of music files, and we also planned a student recital. During the year two new pianos were acquired for the school and the final payment for the organ was made. The Oratorio choir performed Vivaldi’s “Gloria” and excerpts from the “Messiah” before Christmas and Haydn’s “Te Deum” in spring. Many students also availed themselves of taking organ, voice, and piano lessons. The Chorister’s tour to Ontario was also a highlight. They also prepared a Christmas Carol Programme, and visited some churches in Manitoba. The music in our school is of utmost importance, because for many students it is the first opportunity to develop their musical abilities. It is a wonderful avenue of rendering praise and adoration to our Creator. Mary Dueck Chairman 29 (Committee Left to Right: Mr. L. Doerksen, Staff Advisor; Esther Unrau; Liz Unrau. Seated: John Rempel; Alice Dyck; Dave Enns, Chairman. Recreation played an important part in our Bible School program. We started the year off with an amateur hour in which almost everyone participated. We endeavoured to have a social every weekend. These socials consisted of bowling, to¬ bogganing, films, a Halloween party, and a skating party, etc. Our sports activity consisted of intramural volleyball and basketball. The school was divided into four houses. These houses plaved against one another every Tuesday and Thursday night at the Elementary School Gym. Other sports consisted of football ' curl¬ ing, hockey, skating, ping pong and shuffleboard. Several volleyball and basketball games were played against the local Collegiate M.B.B.C. and M.B.C.I. 6 The hockey games played against various churches and schools were enjoyed by all. We trust that these activities have proven beneficial. Dave Enns Chairman Left to Right: Mr. Wiebe, Staff Advisor; Carol Schroeder, Secretary; Mary Rempel, Typist; Eleanor Harder, Assistant Editor. Seated: John W. Enns, Photography; Esther Nikkei, Editor; Dave Wiebe, Treasurer. The experiences of the year have been varied — enjoyable, enlightening, some frus¬ trating — all essential in giving us a balanced education and preparing us for a life which will place a wide range of demands on each of us. We have endeavoured to depict some of these experiences, to serve as a remembrance for those who were here, an incentive to consider Christian education for those who have not attended, and to give members of our conference an insight into the school life. My sincere word of thanks to the co-operating churches, the photographer, Mr. Sa- watzky, the advertising patrons, our staff advisor, Mr. Wiebe, and to those who gave cheer¬ fully of their time in the production of this book. Activities nfpfifP CJhe (Choristers The program for the Choristers (seen above) during this past year was exciting as well as stimulating to their spiritual lives. Their first performance was a Carol Service at Christmas in the Winkler M.B. Church. The highlight of the year was the Choir Tour to Ontario Churches which the Choristers made on Feb¬ ruary 8-17. Deputation was also made by the Choristers in Manitoba beginning the end of February and continuing every Sunday through to April. It is the purpose of the Choristers that their singing will have glorified God and furthered the cause of Christian Education in the area of music. 34 Singing is an important phase of school life. The general choir seen above performed at various school functions. Various smaller singing groups sang in Chapel and enjoyed serving at the Hos¬ pital, Heritage Manor, and Salem Home for the Aged. A number of our students played musical in¬ struments, including the cordovox (right) violin, trumpet and clarinet. ||| j§ m- 35 I ... . _ m mmmmm The school thrives on prayer. The Christmas banquet on December 16th was really en¬ joyed by the students, faculty and Board. Mr. James Nikkei gave a short challenging talk entitled “For unto us — what?” I AT THE WORLD NFIV KNOW John 11 2 « The Student Missionary Weekend Retreat from Jan. 27-29, a new venture for the school challenged us to rethink our concept of a “missionary” in broader terms and presented to us realistically the present problems in foreign mission. Some of the guests were Dr. Roy Just, Mr. Dwight Wiebe and Rev. A. J. Neufeld. 38 On February 7 to 9 the Choristers with Mr. Wiens, Mr. Goossen, and Mr. Wiebe made a tour of the Ontario churches — Virgil, the St. Catharines M B. Churches, Vineland, Kitchener, Port Rowan, Leamington and 3 private schools. The experience, though physically ex¬ hausting, was tremendously mentally and spiritually stim¬ ulating. The same week, the students not involved in the tour, spent a very enjoyable week at Camp Arnes. The activ¬ ities included Ski-dooing, tobogganing, skiing, ice-fishing and hiking and the participation of Wig-Wam activities. Guest speakers gave talks on the various aspects of camp¬ ing. On March 15th and 16th the school put on the drama, The Carpenter, under the direction of Ted Goossen. Cast members were Waldo Pauls (leading role), Evelyn Heide, Ron Braun, Hildi Sawatsky, Herb Hoeppner, Esther Nik¬ kei, Mary Rempel, Helen Martens, Rick Toews, John Enns, and Vic Peters. At left we see part of the cast during one of its practices. 39 Each day consisted of six classes — three in the morning and three in the afternoon. The classes took the form of lectures, discussions and seminars. Classes began at 8:45 A.M. and continued to 3:55 Food, the physical necessity anywhere, was tremendous. Students were expected to get up for breakfast at 7:30 — dinner and supper were, of course, never missed. The cooks were excellent and meals were unlimited and delicious. ■ After school activities include sports such as hockey prac¬ tice, curling and basketball. The library is open for study until 10:00 and here are found innumerable research and reference books. Voice, piano and organ lessons are also conducted after school-hours. The school is equipped with several good pianos and church-model Baldwin organ. Still On the Bottle? Intelligence Plus Brain and brawn?
