EDITORIAL The year 1966 at the Winkler Bible School has been one of much activity—physical, mental, and spiritual. The aim of this yearbook is to depict all the activities as adequately as possible. We hope that our desire to cap¬ tivate many of the memories will have been accomplished. Although the work was difficult, and at times even frustrating, we really enjoyed working to produce this publication. The work however, would not have been com¬ pleted without the special assistance of certain individuals. We would like to express our gratitude to the Rev. John Unger for his guidance as a staff advisor, to Mr. Sawatzky for his photography, to all oiur advertising patrons, to those who purchased the advertisements, and to those who submitted the candid snaps. We sincerely hope that the “Morning Star” will provide many moments of enjoyment for those who will relive and recall the days at this institution. For those who have not been with us we trust that you will receive a greater insight into the spirit of our school. Ingrid Goerz, Editor. WINNIPEG 2 Dedication • THE MORNING STAR of 1966 is respect¬ fully dedicated to our beloved principal, Rev. John H. May his service con- tinue to inspire many young lives as they study at the WINKLER BIBLE SCHOOL. 3 Board Of Directors Back row, left to right: S. G. Ewert, Rev. J. W. Kroeker, Rev. A. J. Froese, C. MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD Werte Bibelschulfreunde: In Psalm 119:9 steht geschrieben: „Wie wird ein Jiingling seinen Weg unstraflich gehen?” Congratulations From Kehler Feed Seed George Kehler, Proprietor NIVERVILLE MANITOBA 4 It light nig Qod w .ill candle, enlighten O ADMI mm. . ■ ■ H? REV. JOHN H. GOOSSEN B.Sc., B.Th. PRINCIPAL BIBLE BIBLE GEOGRAPHY ADVISOR TO LITERARY COMMITTEE ADVISOR TO STUDENT COUNCIL “But the Word of our God shall stand forever.” Isaiah 40:8. In this time of unprecedented progress and achievement in all the areas of life, the one factor that we are continually aware of is the element of change. Society changes, methods change and values change. However, the Bible says that God does not change (Malachi 3:6), and that His Word will endure forever. His ethical moral standards remain unaltered, His promises are steadfast and His judgments remain true. It has been our privilege to study God’s Word together. Much Bible knowledge has been acquired by each one of you in your studies. However, Bible knowledge alone is insufficient to effectively witness for Christ. The truth must be appropriated inwardly and it is only then meaningful when it is exercised in our personal life. The need today is for more Christian leaders in whom Christ can work in His ways in the power of the Spirit. It is my sincere prayer that, in the changing circumstances of your life, your faith in Christ will remain constant, that your love for God and man may abound and that you may be Ambassadors for Christ to be used in His service. It is with gratitude and appreciation that we welcome the appearance of this new issue of the Morning Star. We commend the Yearbook Committee and all who have been responsible for the production of this annual. Rev. Goossen, Jonathan, Paul, Marvin, Randy, Mrs. Goossen. 6 MR. LEONARD DOERKSEN B.A., B.Th. PART-TIME INSTRUCTOR CHRISTIAN EDUCATION BIBLE ADVISOR TO YEARBOOK AND LIBRARY COMMITTEES — All about nerves, Oh you characters Outstanding among the Christian’s many rela¬ tionships is his relationship with God. Four significant, progressive phases of this relationship are: Almost 2,000 years ago the Apostle Paul said, “the time is short” (I Cor. 7:29). We are time conscious and yet we must realize that time is not controlled by the calendar or watch. Our time is in God’s hand. We must therefore use our time to the best advantage. This makes time spent in the serious study of the Bible worthwhile. I consider it a real privilege to serve the Lord in the Winkler Bible School. The opportunity to share precious Bible truths with the young people of our churches is a satisfying experience indeed. 1. The LOST relationship—“The son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.” 2. The LOVE relationship—“We love him be¬ cause he first loved us.” 3. The LIFE relationship—“I am come that they might have life . . .” 4. The LASTING relationship”—and so shall we ever be with the Lord.” Paul, Mr. Doerksen, Charles, Joyce, Dorothy Mrs. Doerksen. Mr. Froese, Margaret Ann, Mrs. Froese M Food! “THAT I MAY WIN CHRIST.” PHIL. 3:7-14 Following the example of Paul: I MUST count loss for Christ the things that were gain to me — re-evaluate. v. 7 I MUST suffer the loss of all things— pay the price v. 8 I MUST do this one thing—forgetting the things behind— neither be discouraged nor satisfied with past achievements. vv. 12-13 I MUST reach forth unto the things which are before—have a clear vision. v. 13 I MUST press toward the mark— by the all sufficient and all enabling grace of God in view of the high calling. v. 14 Rev. and Mrs. H. Lenzmann Water! When Jesus Christ was among us. He im¬ pressed on us the importance of making the Message of Peace intelligible to our neighbours. The music department of the Winkler Bible School is assured that music, the “universal language,” is a means of expression so potent that the world has yet to see what can be done through music in the work of the Kingdom. We sense the need for increased emphasis on integrity and purity of expression in church music. God’s revelation to man is profound and awe¬ inspiring. Our response, feeble though it be, must be as complete and as worthy as we are able to make it. In those areas of life’s mystery where words fail us, music helps man to express the inexpressible. Mr. A. W. Klassen Janitor Rev. Unger, Gerald, Danny, Paul, Mrs. Unger. Plato or Unger? The Bible is the supreme instrument in the cultivation of the spiritual need of man. Behind every message there must be a man, and the primary function of the Bible for the teacher is to produce such a (student) man. The Bible mirrors our own lives. The best cure for empty professionalism is to keep close to the Bible. By keeping company with men like Isaiah, Micah, Daniel and Paul we move away from shallow impressionism to genuine Christian manhood which expresses deep soul struggle. We want to move in that direction as we continue to dwell habitually in the world of the Bible. Linda Doerksen Part-time Secretary Mrs. M. Wiens Cook Miss K. WINKLER MANITOBA 12 Okaiuuttra prsttont 0 iHasaage Spring is rapidly approaching, and with it will come the termination of our studies at the Winkler Bible School. The years that we, the students of the third class, have spent here have passed very rapidly. We have experienced that what David writes in Psalm 34:8 “O taste and see that the Lord is good, blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord.” We have tasted spiritual food. The Lord has been good to us, and our trust and faith in God has been strengthened. There are many reasons for our spiritual enrichment which we have received here. The Word of God in great extent has been taught to us; the many prayer meetings have been a great blessing to us; our daily chapel services where we often heard special speakers gave us the spiritual keynote of the day, and our teachers have influenced us to greater dedication and a closer walk with God. As third class graduates of the Winkler Bible School it is our prayer that we may be able to put into action that which we have learned here and that our class motto, Christ liveth in me” Galatians 2:20, may always be expressed to those people with whom we will come in contact in the future. We, the Student Council, have experienced a year which has involved much work but also a great amount of satisfaction. “But let every man prove his own work and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone and not in another.” Galatians 6:4. This has been true of the Student Council. The Student Council is composed of a representative from each committee, classroom, and dormitory, as well as a faculty advisor. In a united effort we have tried to promote various school activities and to provide a me¬ dium for closer student-teacher relations. One of the major concerns of the Student Council during this school year has been to draw up a constitution for the Student Association. This, together with other school functions, has kept us quite busy and I would like to say a personal thank you to each Council member for the time and effort which he or she has devoted to the work. I trust that God has been able to use us during the year in promoting the physical and spiritual well-being of the students, and that as we lay down this responsibility which was entrusted to us, it can be with the clear knowledge that our service has honoured God. As we have served in our music department, the committee has endeavoured to produce music that would focus our attention on the great truth of Christianity. Our specific duties have included arranging music for chapel and Christian Service, planning recitals, care of music, and aid to our director in producing “Gloria” by A. Vivaldi and “St. Luke Passion” by J. S. Bach. Our project for this year has been partial payment for our Baldwin organ. There is music which glorifies art, music which glorifies the artist, and music which appeals to sentiment and emotion. Our desire has been to produce music to the glory of God. Competitive sports were also encouraged; these consisted of curling in the local curling rink, hockey on our own rink and a ping-pong tournament which was held in school. I was slow to grasp Your demand for me To do a special task. And when I saw, I could not give back To You, my life, my all. You gave me talent Yet I wished to hoard it in This treasure chest of mine. I could not leave It held me back ’Twas my ideal. I knew my way My plan was complete, But Yours? Until You used an instrument Of humble crumbling clay, You spoke, through man “Let go, my child, You cannot go alone To face the foes of life. Your talent will not satisfy Desires for things above Unless, unless, my child, You hand it back to me, And let me take control. Lord, I’m Yours now! I’ll let You take control, I’m slow to realize That I must be Yours alone! But finally You taught me Finally I learned, And now I give to You, Lord, All I am and have. Though CHANGE unparalleled Shall confuse mankind, And unsettle all that’s settled; In WITNESS unashamed Your power will aid To bear the news; To TRIUMPH unquestioned I’ll rely on You, Your strength is mine! —Mabel Enns.
