The Yearbook Committee has endeavored to depict the activities of the school of the past as well as those of the present year. We have enjoyed working together to produce this bock. However, this book could not have been completed without the assistance of many others. Special thanks go out to Rev. G. D. Pries, our staff adviser, Dr. G. D. Huebert who wrote the editorial for the historical section, Mr. G. Sawatzky, our photographer, and Wayne Enns, the yearbook artist. We would also like to express our appreciation to the Auxiliary members of the Committee, namely Dan Willms, Ken Voth, Ingrid Goerz and Mabel E nns for their assistance, as well as to the entire student body. We trust that this book will bring back many pleasant memories to past and present students alike, and that it will serve as an encouragement to others to attend Pniel. (I Samuel 19:20). The purpose of that school was to train prophets. The best Bible school was founded by the omniscient teacher, the Lord Jesus Christ. In His school, approximately 1,935 years ago, apostles were trained for the great task of evangelizing the world (Matthew 28:19). Various individuals, denominations, or church bodies have followed the example of Christ and Samuel and have founded schools in order to meet an existing need of equipping spiritual workers for the immense task of making the Gospel known to an unbelieving world, and of establishing the faith of those who have appro¬ priated salvation. In 1918 the brethren in Russia opened the Krimer Bibleschule under the leadership of Bro. J. G. Wiens, and the brethren A. H. Unruh and G. J. Reimer as fellow-instructors. In Canada the formal Bible school movement in the MB Constituency was begun in Herbert, Sask., in 1913, under Bro. J. F. Harms. The founders of these schools clearly realized that no church body can long continue if the fundamental doctrines of the Bible are not implanted in its youth. For the same purpose The Winkler Bible School, “PNIEL”, was organized in Winkler, Manitoba, in 1925, with Bro. A. H. Unruh as founder and first teacher. Closely associated with the school in its beginning were five other brethren, G. J. Reimer, who joined the staff after Christmas of the first year, J. G. Wiens, who commenced teaching in the fall of 1926, and J. B. Dyck, J. A. Kroeker, and A. A. Kroeker, who served as co-directors. These six men, who may be regarded as the founders of The Winkler Bible School, set the tone for the school and drafted its first constitution, dated January 24, 1928. In due course, the school was also officially incorporated. In the fall of 1925, instruction began with 6 students in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Warkentin. The number of students increased to 22, and after Christmas instructions were carried on in two classes. The first concrete action came in the summer of 1926 with the erection of Pniel’s first administration building. This was made possible by the generosity of interested people in a Bible school. The building site was purchased from Bishop Jacob Hoeppner. In the year 1926-1927 the enrollment was 32; instruction was given in 3 classes by 3 teachers. Special stress was laid on the training of young people for the ministry. In regard to the curricu¬ lum, it was decided to adopt the curriculum of the Krimer Bibelschule in South Russia. However, a need was felt for the training of Sunday school teachers in the English language. To meet this need, a call was extended to Bro. A. A. Kroeker, who joined the staff in 1929. The program was now expanded to a four-year course. This extended course of studies created an ever-increasing interest in the school and thus it became an urgent necessity to enlarge the physical dimensions of the school. This project was carried out in 1933, when a second storey was built, and in 1938, when the building was doubled in size, whereby a suitable auditorium and 2 additional classrooms were provided. The number of students had now risen to over a hundred. New impetus was given to the Pniel Bible School through the influence and teaching of the brethren A. A. Unruh, G. D. Pries, A. H. Redekop, H. H. Redekop, and Miss Nettie L. Kroeker. Students, who already had re¬ ceived instruction under Bro. Reimer, were given the opportunity to extend their training under the music directors Ben Horch and Dietrich Friesen. During the course of the years, music instruction was offered privately to interested students by local music teachers. These years were characterized by moderate but steady growth and continuous improvements in curriculum and in quality of instruction. In 1936 The Winkler Bible School sent out students in Summer Bible School work for the first time, under the supervision of Bro. Pries, who directed this work for 10 years. As an outgrowth of this work, and upon the suggestion of Bro. H. H. Redekop, further steps were taken to promote work among the children of southern Manitoba. This led to the building of the Winkler Bible Camp at Burwalde in 1949, of which Bro. G. B. Dyck became the first camp director, and was succeeded by Bro. John Boldt. (This work was passed on to the churches.) The year 1944 was significant in that it marked the transition of the Winkler Bible School from private to conference ownership. The official transaction was made by the Brethren A. H. Uniruh, J. G. Wiens, A. A. Kroeker, A. H. Redekop, G. D. Pries and H. H. Redekop, who transferred the school with whatever spiritual values and material possessions it had to the Mennonite Brethren Conference of Manitoba. The pattern of administration was changed in some respects. The Board of Directors, elected by the Confer¬ ence, consisting of 9 members, assumed the responsibilities which formerly had been borne by its original owners. Brethren who have served as chairmen of this board are: H. S. Voth, H. P. Harder, F. H. Friesen. Simultaneously a change was made in the curriculum. For a number of years the Winkler Bible School had offered a fifth class. Upon resolution of the conference the fifth class of 1943-44 was offered on college level. This arrangement terminated when the conference voted to concentrate the college work in Winnipeg, as Mennonite Brethren Bible College. 15 This involved changes of faculty members. Teachers who joined the staff of the Winkler Bibl e School since that time are: G. B. Dyck, G. H. Enns, R. C. Seibel, B. B. Boldt, John Boldt, J. H. Goossen, G. D. Huebert, D. K. Duerksen, W. G. Baerg, J. H. Quiring, J. Hildebrand, H. Lenzmann, Rudy Baerg, Len Doerksen, Allen Andres, and John Froese. (Several teachers rejoined the staff.) The new board took steps in providing housing facilities. From the very beginning Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Hooge had provided board and room for many students and had shown keen interest in the promotion of the Bible School. In the year 1944-45 the Old Folks Home, which was owned and operated by the Hooges, was purchased and changed into a men’s dormitory. About a year later a private home was bought to accommodate the ladies. When this one was sold, another home was purchased for the same purpose. In recent years efforts have been made to co-ordinate and unify the educational program of all Mennonite Brethren schools in Canada. This ide al was realized, at least in part, on a provincial level in Manitoba. An Edu¬ cational Committee was elected with two already-existing subcommittees, one of which was responsible for the Winkler Bible School and the other for the Mennonite Brethren Collegiate Institute in Winnipeg. For practical reasons of co-operation and co-ordination it was decided that the Winkler Bible School operate on a three-year basis, instead of following a four-year course program as it had done for many years. Plans were also initiated for a new campus of the Winkler Bible School. These plans were accepted by the Manitoba Conference in 1963. The ground breaking ceremony took place on March 16, 1964, and on October 4, 1964 the new Administration Building and the Women’s Residence were dedicated. In assessing the value of The Winkler Bible School to the Mennonite Brethren Conference and other churches, one needs but to look at the pastors, the missionaries, the Sunday school workers and music directors, the scores cf teachers in Bible schools and other schools, and hundreds of Christian men and women in various professions who support the cause of Christ. A considerable percentage of these workers come from Pniel’s graduates and former students. Looking back at the 40 years of Pniel’s history — its trials, but also its triumphs and the immeasurable con tribution to the Christian education of our youth, we are led to give humble thanks to our heavenly Father for guidance, and to pray for its continuous growth in service to God and man. The total number of teachers who have taught in the Winkler Bible School during this period of 40 years is 27. The following teachers have been on the staff 6 years or more: A. H. Unruh (19), J. G. Wiens (23), G. J. Reimer (15), A. A. Kroeker (15), G. D. Pries (19), A. H. Redekop (9), H. H. Redekop (16), John Boldt (9), J. H. Goossen (13), B. B. Boldt (7), G. D. Huebert (6), and H. Lenzmann (6). Five brethren have served as principals: A. H. Unruh (19), J. G. Wiens (4), H. H. Redekop (8), G. D. Huebert (3), and J. H. Goossen (6). With reference to all teachers of this School, may the words of prophecy “... they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn may be righteousness as the stars for ever and ever,” (Daniel 12:3), find their fulfillment for their faithful labor of love. The sacrificial efforts of a dedicated staff, the board members, and the many friends that gave and prayed for the Winkler Bible School would have been in vain had not the Lord built the house. As a brotherhood we can therefore say with an attitude of heart-felt gratitude, “The Lord hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad,” (Psalm 126:3). G. D. HUEBERT. WINKLER BIBLE SCHOOL REUNION JULY 1964 ALUMNI OF THE WINKLER BIBLE SCHOOL How it began The first Alumni meeting was held on February 21, 1935 in the Bible School, with morning and afternoon ses¬ sions. PRINCIPAL OLD TESTAMENT—PROPHECY NEW TESTAMENT—ACTS AND HEBREWS ADVISER TO LITERARY COMMITTEE L. to r.: Randy, Mrs. Goossen, Jonathan, Mr. Goossen, Marvin, Paul. For the Lord thy God hath blessed thee in all the works of thy hand; he knoweth thy walking in the great wilderness: these forty years the Lord thy God has been with thee; thou hast lacked nothing. Deuteronomy 2:7 The Scripture passage cited above, serves well as an ap¬ propriate motto on the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of the Winkler Bible School. It expresses oui sentiments. The testimony refers to bountiful blessings, memorable experiences and faithful guidance. As such it is particularly suitable and applicable to the history and development of our school. Like Moses of old, we acknowledge our indebtedness to God and thank Him for His faithfulness throughout the years. He has supplied the material and spiritual needs. Physically, the school has grown and developed. From an inconspicuous beginning in 1925, the work has progressed and prospered. Today we have a new campus and new facilities. When we reflect on this, the words of the Psalmist come to mind, “This is of the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.” As such the school stands as an edifice of God’s good¬ ness to us. In turn, however, it is also a signal witness of the faithful support that it has enjoyed from the churches of our constituency. In the spiritual realm who can enumerate the countless bless¬ ings which we have received? There were times when the Lord spoke in a very special way to all. We felt His nearness, in the classroom when the Word was expounded, in the morning chapel services or at the Bible and Missionary conferences when we were edified and challenged. The joy of Christian fellowship in school, in the dormitory, and on deputation will never be forgotten. There were also memorable experiences when lives were cleansed, sanctified and rededicated to Christ. Others were strengthened and encouraged. But the Lord also gave us the opportunity to share our blessings v ith others. We thank Him for the many open doors of Christian service given to us this year in particular. The motto serves as a word of encouragement to our graduates. It is comforting to know that God is the changeless One. On the pilgrimage of life. He knows the need of everyone. We have the assurance that He will protect, provide and guide. When the above words were spoken, Israel was on the thresh- hold of a new era. A new day was dawning; the promised land lay before them to occupy. There were foes to face, bat¬ tles to fight, victories to be won before it could be possessed. You, too, are living in an era of unprecedented progress. Great emphasis is laid upon education. It is a time of great op¬ portunities in every field. Utilize the opportunities as the Lord leads and directs you. Above all remain true to the Lord. The forces of aggressive secularism and materialism will face you. How will you fare? Let us ever remember that it was not the strength of the foe that spelled defeat for Israel, but rather it was faith in God and moral integrity that mat¬ tered. I wish to express my appreciation and thanks to the Year¬ book Committee for the splendid effort that they have put forth to produce the Anniversary Yearbook. In the years to come, may this annual recall many pleasant memories of Bible School. REV. G. D. PRIES B.A., M.A., B.Th., B.Paed. (I Timothy 4:14a) It is one thing to know truth, it is quite another to believe and do it. We find this emphasized in the “Great Commission.” Here Jesus not only challenges His disciples to evangelize, but also to teach; not only to teach, but also to “teach to observe whatsoever I have commanded you.” Only there were known truth has been expressed in proper action has Christian Education really taken place. The Manitoba Mennonite Brethren Conference, its Education Committee, the Board and the Staff of the Winkler Bible School are all deeply concerned that here there should be true Christian Education. They can and do pledge the necessary resources, both material and spiritual, that truth as revealed in the written and the Incar¬ nate Word, be taught here, purely and clearly. But that is as far as they can go in this process; the student must complete it. Through sustained and dedicated effort he must be willing to learn; through obedience to the quickening power of the Holy Spirit he must come to believe what he has learned; and through the grace and power of God, he must faithfully do that which he both knows and firmly believes. That is the way to spiritual richness, fulness, joy — both in this world and that which is to come. Rev. H. H. We sensed from the very beginning that this institution was different from any other we had attended previously; this was a school in which God and His Word held first place. This school was centered around Christ. We registered, and in great anticipation began to study the Word of God, which was to become very precious and dear to us. It was a similar, and yet different situation when we returned in 1964 and enrolled for our final year. We returned to the same school; yet to a new campus. Everything around us was new; except, the teachers and the Word. The Word was the same, and it again deeply impressed itself upon our hearts. As we are now preparing to leave this Institute, which we have learned to love and cherish, we are filled with deep gratitude. We are thankful to the Conference constituency for our campus, for the facilities which have made our studies more enjoyable. We are thankful to our parents, to our faculty, fellow students, to all those who have contributed in any way to our stay here. Above all, our hearts are filled with love and gratitude to our Heavenly Father “who giveth us richly all things to enjoy.” It has been our rare privilege to “sit at the feet of Jesus” and to “learn of Him.” As we take leave of Pniel, we do so with a deep awareness of our responsibility, for “we are ambassadors for Christ.” It is our prayer that we might faithfully discharge this responsibility. As representatives and stewards of our Almighty God, we strive, as Paul did “toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.” May we, therefore, hold fast the form of sound words, “in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus.” Amie Neufeld LIFE IS SHORT Life is short, each passing moment Brings me closer to my rest. Music must take rank as the highest of the fine arts — as the one which more than any other ministers to human welfare.” (Herbert Spencer) Music plays a primary role in ministering to man’s spiritual welfare, and therefore is an integral phase of the work of the Bible School — in worship, in fellowship, in Christian Service, and as our means of representing the school to the church constituency. The Music Committee has been responsible to arrange daily chapel music as well as to plan two student recitals. We have also done our best to aid Mr. A. Andres as director of music, in planning and presenting the Christmas cantata, Miracle of Bethlehem”, the “Messiah” as a community effort, and the concluding program at graduation. There is much music which appeals merely to human sentiment but has little to offer for the soul. Our desire as we have served in the music department of our school has been to present music to the honor and glory of God. For God is King of all the earth: sing ye praises with understanding.” Psalm 47:7. Mabel Enns Compliments of A. A. KROEKER and SONS LTD. The Literary Committee has been privileged to be active preparing literary programs for both students of the school, and the public. The year opened with the viewing of the film “Wire Tapper”, and on a later date the play “Faith or Reason” was presented. The enthusiasm and talents of various students will make the presentation of the drama “Drums of Destiny” possible in March. After the books were transferred from the old school to the new school, the committee spent many hours reorganizing the books on the new shelves. A new filing system was started to aid the students in finding the required books. We wish to express our gratitude and appreciation to the first graduating class of Winkler Bible School for the donation of the Encyclopedia Britannica. These have been a great asset to the library and are continually used by students and teachers. We hope that the work done by the committee will be of benefit to the future students. As a Recreation Committee, we have tried in this school year to make recreation and sports a part of the school’s Christian training, with such sports as curling and hockey playing an integral part in this phase of the school’s extra curricular activities. With nostalgia we recollect such sports highlights as the football-volleyball social we had with the Elim Bible School of Altona, with the Altona school as host, and the broom-ball social that our school had, to begin the second semester. Hockey games with neighboring towns were met with enthusiasm and good sportsmanship. As Recreation Committee it has been our endeavor to make sports an avenue for Christian fellowship and witnessing and therefore an aid to Christian maturity. It became a Roman Republic, which was overthrown in 42 B.C., and was replaced by a Roman colony; it was given special privileges as a little “Rome.” Located on the Pangaean Mountain Range in East Macedon, Philippi was on the Via Egnalia Road from Rome to Asia; it was nine miles from the Aegean Sea. There were numerous gold mines nearby, for which Philippi was important. There was a Jewish colony in the City which was, however, not large enough for a synagogue. Meetings were held in an open enclosure on the banks of the River Gangites (Angista) which offered facilities for Levitical purifications. THE CHURCH AT PHILIPPI Paul went to Macedonia on his Second Missionary Journey in response to the vision of a man of the country there calling for help. When they reached the city, there was seemingly no need of them, and they spoke to a group of women outside. The conversion of Lydia (Acts 16), the first European convert, is well known. Through her conversion, and that of the Jailor, the first European church was begun. Luke remained here. From Paul’s tender tone, and the gift the church sent him, we assume that this church had a special place in Paul’s affections. THE DATE OF THE LETTER This is the last of the so-called Prison Letters; as the first three of the four were written about A.D. 60, Philippians must have been written A.D. 61. This theory assumes that Paul wrote it from the Roman prison. According to some historians, Philippians was written from the prison in Ephesus. If this is the case, it must be dated A.D. 55. THE OCCASION OF ' THE LETTER The Philippians had sent a gift to Paul by Epaphrodites (4:18), who was to remain there to strengthen Paul. Because of illness, he went back, taking with him Paul’s letter. THE PURPOSE OF THE LETTER The purpose of the letter is four-fold: 1. The letter was one of thanksgiving for the gift. 2. He wanted to tell them that he was sending Timothy (2:19-30) that they would receive him considerately. 3. He was assuring them of his welfare and joy in Christ, in spite of affliction. 4. There was an exhortation to two Christian women, Euodias and Syntyche, who were quarreling.
