BOARD OF DIRECTORS “Ah Lord God! behold, Thou hast made the heaven and the earth by Thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for Thee: . . . the Great, the Mighty God, the Lord of hosts, is His Name, Great in counsel, and mighty in work:” Jer. 32:17, 18b, 19a. How well these verses express the manifestation of the Lord in the work of the Winkler Bible School! In retrospect, we would like to express our gratitude to the founders who had the vision for the need of this institution, and also to those who have carried the responsibilities of administration and teach¬ ing through all these years. They built upon the foundation which is Christ Jesus. (I Cor. 3:11) The Lord has blessed these services and has crowned the work with a chain of answered prayers. Let us not forget to thank God for the great treasure we have in Christian youth of today, who are the future of the church. We are thankful for the opportunity we have as a Conference to offer the facilities where, through a systematic study of God’s Word, our youth can orientate itself and grow spiritually. Here also, a program of effective expressional Christian service is being promoted. It is our sincere prayer that we would have open minds and hearts to listen to the counsel of God in planning for the future development of our institution in order that it could be an honor and glory to His Name. There is nothing too hard for Him. We are indeed thankful for the devoted staff who are doing their utmost to train and teach the students in the Word of God. May the Lord bless and reward them for their much appreciated service. It is gratifying to have such a large student body this year and hope that the enrollment will again be increased for the 1963-64 school term. The value of time used in the study of God’s Word goes beyond the temporal, it has values for eternity. Billy Graham says: “Time is the dressing room of eternity. ‘How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation?’ (Hebrews 2:3) We can fritter fritter away time in idleness, in unprofitable con¬ versation and in an excessive attachment to worldly amusements. We can redeem the time by employ¬ ing it wisely and profitably, by attending to character building rather than appetite pleasing, and by meditating upon the greatness of God and the wonder of His Gospel. Let us take time to pray and read God’s Word. Let us learn the importance of time.” Board of Directors, B. D. Enns, Sec. Principal’ M MR. JOHNH. GOOSSEN b.sc, b.th. As we recall the blessings of the past months spent at Bible School, our hearts are filled with gratitude to God for His goodness. All of us have received untold benefits. For the faculty, it was encouraging to see the substantial increase in the enrolment of our school. We thank the Lord that His spirit moved the hearts of our young people to avail themselves of the opportunity to study His Word. To many students Bible School has also been a place of orientation, re-evaluation and dedication. To those whose hearts were burdened with the question, “Lord what wilt thou have me to do?”, direction was received as they studied the Word and became quiet before the Lord. To them Bible School was a place of orientation. To others, in the light of the knowledge of Christ, things were seen in -their proper perspective. There were things to be counted as loss, others as gain. Tradition and heritage, time and talents were seen in a new light. But primarily, Bible School was a penuel — a trysting place — a soul-searching of motives, of direction, of intent with the inevitable resolve of the sincere soul to a renewed dedication to Christ. PAULINE EPISTLES As I recall all these mercies my prayer for you all is that you may be “rooted and built up in Him, and established in the faith as ye have been taught, abound¬ ing therein with thanksgiving.” BIBLICAL GEOGRAPHY EVAN GELISM MINOjR PROPHETS ACTS I wish to commend the Yearbook Committee and all those who so faithfully worked on the production of this fine Yearbook. As we scan its pages may we recall many pleasant memories of those who “spake often one to another — those who feared the Lord and that thought upon His name.” Mai. 3:16. 5 REV. G. D. PRIES m.a. b.th. DOCTRINE ETHICS THEOLOGY HISTORY OF CHRISTIAN THOUGHT HOMILETICS PSYCHOLOGY RELIGIOUS EDUCATION WHY I CHOOSE A CHRISTIAN SCHOOL From my experience in the Winkler Bible School and my contacts with other schools, these are the answers I have found. First is the affectionate, abiding concern for the individual. Intimate interests in present and future welfare are mutually exchanged on terms of personal friendship. Second is the pattern of school-life in which the student finds himself and discovers oppor¬ tunities to engage in activities that are contributive toward development and maturation as a Christian personality. Third is the advantage that a Christian school is central not peripheral. The Christ is the centre who by the very nature of the Gospel works in one heart at a time to lead it into wider scopes and higher horizons of Christian experience to the end that “God may be all in all.” G. D. Pries. “Sei eifrig bestrebt, vor Gott ah bewahrt dazustehen, als ein Arbeiter, der sich seiner Arbeit nicht zu schamen braucht, da er das Wort der Wahrheit richtig darbietet.” —2. Tim. 2:15 (Menge). 6 REV. H. LENZMANN BIBLE SYNTHESIS HISTORICAL BOOKS PAULINE EPISTLES MISSIONS The eagle that soars the upper air does not worry about how it will cross the river. It is my prayer to live in close fellowship with the Lord. As we live in fellow¬ ship with Him our life is directed by Him and He does make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. These are new and elevating experiences. This is the time when we get to know Him and the power of His resurrection. As we do so and yield to Him, we are changed into His image from glory to glory as by the Spirit of the Lord. Christ was not influenced by the circumstances round about Him. His meat was to do His Father’s will. As we conform to His will and Word we are enabled to live above the circumstances. 7 MR. A. M. ANDRES CHOIR THEORY CONDUCTING HYMNOLOGY VOICE PRINCIPLES OF TEACHING GENERAL EPISTLES PERSONAL EVANGELISM 2 FALSE CULTS N.T. BIBLE MAJOR PROPHETS PUBLIC SPEAKING GREEK (Elementary) The two dominant themes in the work of a Bible school teacher could be stated in two words: Privilege and Responsibility. It is a privilege to be under the influence of the Word of God daily, to be compelled to dig into it, and by teaching others, enrich our own lives. Moreover, if it is not to presumptious, God has given us a unique opportunity as His co-workers to help guide the destiny of many young people. This then, brings one face to face with the tremendous responsibility of representing Christ aright, not only theoretically but practically. In view of this responsi¬ bility we pray with Katie B. Wilkinson: May the mind of Christ my Saviour Live in me from day to day, By His love and power controlling All I do and say. 8 MR. JOHN FROESE babik OLD TESTAMENT BIBLE GERMAN LIFE OF CHRIST CHURCH HISTORY MENNONITE HISTORY The serious-minded, responsible Christian youth is in search of life — where does it begin? There are many voices which offer answers. But the voice and life of Jesus teach that LIFE begins at DEATH. “. . . except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone; but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit.” This is God’s law of life. Let us “not be deceived; God is not mocked.” Jesus said, “I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” —John 10:10. 9 Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Romans 3:4. 15 areive The time is rapidly approaching when we, as the graduating class, must bid farewell to our fellow students and to the school where we have experienced the abundance of God’s grace and have acquired a working knowledge of God’s Word. As we look back over the years that we have spent in this school; we can truly say that the Lord has been good to us. We have experienced that Christ giveth “more grace” and that his grace is sufficient for us. The morning chapel services have been a source of spiritual strength and encouragement to us. And through a systematic study of God’s Word we have been taught to sink our roots more deeply into the soil of life’s enriching values. We have been blessed abundantly and cannot help but say that we have seen Jesus. We, as third class, have enjoyed the fellowship with the first and second classes. Together we have been drawn closer to the Lord and have learned, in part to “Study to shew ‘ourselves’ approved unto God, ‘workmen’ that need not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of truth.” 2 Tim. 2:15. As we consider the responsibilities which will be yours in the year ’63-’64, we wish you God’s divine enablement. We do not know what the future has in store for us, but with Christ’s wisdom to guide us, His arm to strengthen us, and His power to protect us, we have no reason to fear. Our class motto was “Wait on the Lord.” Psalm 27:14, and with those words before us, we can go on assured that He will show us His way. These groups served in our morning chapel service and in the hospital. Every night a group rendered a half-hour service in the local hospital, where they sang five or six songs, read the Word of God and had prayer. We sincerely hope that our small services here have been a source of blessing and strength to the patients as well as to the staff. We have counted it a privilege to have assisted the director in the musical activities of the school. Our sincere desire is that music might play an important part in our Christian life. JUSTICE M.B. We present THE MORNING STAR to the students as a reminder of the past Bible School year; to the churches of our conference as an insight into the con¬ ference Bible School; to prospective students as an incentive to attend Bible School. The compilation of this book has required many hours of planning and work, which, however, has also been an educational experience to us, the members of the Yearbook Committee. We would like to acknowledge the cooperation and assistance of the churches, business firms, photographer and printers, without which the publica¬ tion of this book would not have been possible. As editor I should also like to sincerely thank fellow committee members, staff advisors and fellow students for their contributing efforts. It is my prayer and desire that God may be glorified and that more students will meet God at Bible School. Editor, Calvin Penner. 38 At its annual missionary con ference on Jan. 27-29, the Winkler, Man., Bible School was again brought face to face with the challenge of missions. Stu¬ dents, staff and many visitors were re¬ minded of the command of Christ in Matt. 28:18 to “go tell and teach all na¬ tions.” Br. Ben Zerbe of Montana, mis¬ sionary on furlough from Japan, served with messages entitled, Bringing Back the King, and The Three-Fold Motif of Missions. In addition to his messages in word and song, he took us on a tour of Japan by means of films and demonstra¬ tions. Rev. J. W. Vogt, principal speaker, who is presently with the missions of¬ fice in Hillsboro, drew twelve vivid word pictures depicting the apostle Paul as the ideal missionary in his private life, preaching, persecution, paths of detour, privations, passion, imprisonment, pro¬ tection, prayer life, praise and pay cheque. Br. Vogt also showed pictures of the land of his labours, namely Ger¬ many, which has many beautiful church¬ es, but they lack the beauty of the pres¬ ence of Christ. The harvest truly is plenteous but the laborers are few.” Let us pray the Lord of the harvest that He send us into the field whether at home or abroad. —A. Andres 39 PRACTICAL WORK We count it a great privilege to be able to serve the Lord. Once a week a group of students go to the Tabor Home for the Aged in Morden to present the Word of Life to the dear folk there. Various students tell of what Christ has done for them. Singing also plays a great part in this ministry because we know that the gospel hymns contribute much in spreading Christ’s love and comfort. Two brethren serve with messages in the German and English languages respectively, so that everyone may hear and understand. It is a joy and blessing to witness the response to the preaching of the Word of God. It is our prayer that people may hear the Word of God and commit their cares unto God, for we know that He cares for them. James Heinrichs. 40 GOOD CHEER WORK “He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord; and that which he hath given will he pay him again.” Proverbs 19:17. This year again, we as students of the Winkler Bible School were privileged to distribute “good cheer” to less fortunate families in and around Winkler. On December 17th, after a short prayer meeting, seventy-five students started out on this missionary en¬ deavour. We were divided into thirteen groups, each of which was assigned to a certain district. At every home a passage of Scripture was read and then the gifts were distributed. Even though these gifts were not all perfect $ve tried to point to the perfect gift which God gave us. During that day approximately one hundred and sixty homes were visited. This gave us an insight into the spiritual and material needs of these homes. We have the promise that His Word will not return unto Him void. Isaiah 55:11. We would like to thank all those who have contributed towards this cause in any way such as money, food, or clothing. John Friesen. 41 DEPUTATION WORK “Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised.” Ps. 145:3. During the past year it has been our privilege to praise the Lord in word and song at the various churches. Deputation work was greatly enjoyed by all students. In order that more students might go along, a bu was chartered for several of the trips. This naturally added an exciting and unifying dimension to our Bibl School experience. The purpose of these visits was to renew the contacts with the churches and their interests in the school and to give the churches an insight into school life. We are thankful for the Christian hospitality extended to u: at all the churches, as well as for the support they are giving our school, both prayerfully and financially. The students of the school received a great blessing during the preparation and presentation of these pro grams. It is our prayer that through this work God may have been glorified, and that young people will decide to attend Bible School in the future. Prayer meetings are a source of power for the Bible School; through commitment to Jesus Christ in prayer, we have been able to take hold of His strength. Through intercession for each other we have learned to appreciate the fellowship of believers. Missions prayer meetings have been a challenge to us: how can we pray for others to go forth if we have refused to yield our own lives in service for Christ? We have learned that, in order to pray effectively, we must “live as we pray”; we must “pray with the spirit, and . . . pray with the understanding also. ...” I Cor. 14:15a. “As strength my greatest business is for God, to serve him, so my daily business is with God, to ask him for to do it.”—A.
