THE RED RAIDER 1965 1966 WINIFRED HIGH SCHOOL WINIFRED, MONTANA SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE I wish to congratulate the members of the class of nine- teen hundred sixty-six for the fine yearbook you have pro- duced. Its pictures and stories will give you much enjoyment and pleasure in years to come. Your high school years have been precious years. You have learned much, and probably more important, you have come to realize that much remains to be learned. Those years have been care-free and happy years and in this short span of time you have made life-long friendships. You have learned to work as a team and also as individuals. You have been guided by your parents and your teachers. Your next step will be more on your own. It is the undersigned sincere hope that each and everyone of you will accomplish the goals you have set for yourselves. Sincerely Theodore M. Bergum Principal MR. T. M. BERGUM, B. A. As students in High School, we sometimes don't make the most of our education. There is no lime like the present to really start studying. Start when you're freshman and don't slack off. When you are a senior and they're averaging the four years grades and yours are low its to late then to start worrying. Now is the time to prepare your- self for the years ahead of you. Best luck to all the underclassmen. SALUTATORIAN When graduation comes you are out of school and have to start out on your own. This is a big step toward getting along in the world. I would like to say to the incoming freshman to get the most out of school be- cause it goes faster than you think and isn't as hard if you start at the beginning. To the Juniors, I would like to say, to start thinking of what you want to do when you get out because that Senior year is a short one. 12 CLASS HISTORY In September of 1962, twelve fearful, but determined freshman entered the halls of Winifred High School to begin a four year treck of good times and knowledge. The class began with eight boys-Lenard Carson, Arlie Christensen, Cary Dosher, Dick Foster, Spencer Peterson, Doug Skinner, Gene Thompson, and Howard Tuss. The four girls were Linda Fluegel, Judee Smith, Marie Gonzales, and Mary Ann Tresch. The officers were decided upon and the results were President-Dick Foster, Vice-President- Gary Dosher, Secretary-Marie Gonzales, and Treasurer-Howard Tuss. Mr. Eugene Comas was chosen as our sponsor. Marie and Gary were our Homecoming candidates and Judee Smith was our candidate for Carnival Queen. When we returned in the fall of '63 as Sophomores we found that Marie had left us and that Gary was soon going to leave. To lead our class, chosen were Howard-Pres- ident, Gary-Vice-President, Mary Ann-Secretary, and Dick as Treasurer. Our class sponsor for that year was Mr. Sauvageau. To compete for Gridiron King and Queen were Gene and Mary Ann. Judee was our candidate for Carnival Queen. Once again we returned to W. H. S. to begin our Junior Year. To keep in order the class duties were President-Howard, Vice-President-Dick, Secretary-Judee, and Treasurer-Mary Ann. Mr. Harold Knodel was chosen as class sponsor. Homecoming Candidates were Mary Ann and Howard. Mary Ann gained the honor of Homecoming Queen for that year, giving the class a little more status. Linda was candidate for carnival Queen that year. They worked hardat putting on a successful prom. IN THE MISTY MOONLIGHT, to honor the graduating Seniors. The Junior-Senior banquet was arranged with the combined efforts of the class and determined a success. Our major duty that year was to publish the Prairie Dog Chatter. With our combined efforts we managed to present our Junior Play, Teen-age Millionaire. We began our final year of high school determined to make the most of it. Chosen to lead the class were Gene-President, Dick-Vice-President. Judee-Secretary, and Mary Ann-Treasurer. Our sponsors were Mr. Bergum and Mrs. Wilson. Chosen for our candidates for Gridiron King and Queen were Judee and Howard. Judee gained the honor of Gridiron Queen for that year. Linda also gained the honor of Carnival Queen that year. In basketball, Lenard, Gene, Howard, and Spencer made a fine showing and we brought home the third place trophy at the tournament. Under the direction and hard work of Mrs. Owings we were able to produce a comedy-Hillbilly Courtship. Mary Ann Tresch received the Homemakers of tomorrow award. Upon Graduation, our years in high school a success, we ventured out to see what the world would hold for us. 13 CLASS WILL I, Lenard Carson, will my center position on the football team to Paul Seilstad, and my ability to get along with the coach to Jack Heggem. They started the season off by taking second at the Grass Range Invitational Tournament. They fought hard the whole season but were seated third in the conference. They had tough luck in the first game of the Dist. 9 Tourney and had to come through the back door to get a chance of going to the Northern Divisional Tournament. They won the consolation game Saturday night and thus getting a chance to challenge Winnett Monday Night. The challenge game was unsuccessful, so we brought home the 3rd place trophy. Gene Thompson gave a short speech and thanked the Juniors for the banquet. The prom, Pearly Shells was decorated with the colors of turquoise and green. There was a small fish pond at one end of the gym, above which was written the theme. After the promenade, king Gene Thompson and queen Donna Foster were crowned. The 3 J's provided the music. 35 SENIOR CLASS PLAY The Senior Class of 1966 presented their class play HILLBILLY COURTSHIP on March 18 and 19. The Widow Peppin and deaf old Pappy Stilsby have sworn to shoot each other on sight as their mountain fued rages verbally. To make matters worse Pappy's son, Luke, and Ma Peppin's daughter, Emmy, are in love with each other. The two old feudists have beeft planning second matrimonial ventures, and each has secretly engaged Wash Jeddo, the halfwitted village scribe, to write to a matrimonial bureau for a mate. Wash has enclosed Emmy's picture instead of Ma's and Luke's in Pappy's, signing their respective names instead of Ma's and Pappy's. Meanwhile, the mountain is all agog over the homecoming of the Triffet girls, radio's newest hillbilly sensation who bring their manager Sol Silverstein, with them in quest of more hillbilly entertainers . When Sol attempts to sign Ma on the dotted line, she mistakes him for an answer to her letter and jumps at the chance. Complications set in as one of the Triffet sisters tries to vamp Luke and a pair of wildcats in the shape of a wild Irish Rose and a tempera- mental Italian lad arrive from the matrimonal bureau to claim their mates. Luke and Emmy are dumbfounded as Hog Mountain is transformed into an active volcano of riotous courtship. In the midst of the turmoil, Pappy comes to settle his score with Ma and is captured by the wild Irish rose in her wildest moment. With Pappy and Luke securely tied to a settee, Ma sends for the preacherman; where upon disclosures follow and the hullaboo subsides. How the mates are properly selected is a triumph of hill- billy dexterity, and Sol signs up enough hillbilly warblers to start a new revolution on the air! Luke - Dick Foster Emmy - Judee Smith The Wild Irish Rose - Mary Ann T. 36 The wild woman has Luke and Pappy all tied up, with Emmy and Lulu Triffet looking on. JUNIOR CLASS PLAY The Junior Class sponsored their play, We Dude It. Yipee! Let's all head for the wild, wild West with Bob Meacham and his mother. They've inherited a ranch in Texas. Mrs. Meacham, a rather flighty widow, is a dyed-in-the-wool Easterner but determined to become a Texas — gal overnight. The newly acquired ranch is manned by a modern Indian couple and an old sourdough named Charley. He almost tears out his hair when Mrs. Meacham starts to clean her pistols with soap and water! Because she has a brainstorm, Mrs. Meacham advertises the ranch as a dude ranch even before she sees the place. Bob likes the local scenery in the person of one Donna Logan, daughter of oilman Thousand Barrel Pete Logan who owns a neighboring spread. Before he can pursue Donna, however, and before Mrs. Meacham can unpack, they start arriving. They? Why, those onery dudes, of course! A crazier bunch of dudes can't be found anywhere West of the Mississippi. Most obnoxious of all is a movie star of an- cient vintage who still thinks she's a glamour girl. With her is her maid, secretary, and - What's that noise? Oh, just her darling daughter tearing the ranch apart. Cynthia (Stinky), her child, is a whirlwing of activity-all of it bad. To keep her occupied and give the guests a thrill, Bob and Donna decide to stage a fake Indian raid with 'he help of their modern Indians. Unfortunately, Mrs. Meacham and Charley think it's a real raid and want to shoot some Indians. With impatient guests demanding service and Indians whooping at her door, Mrs. Meacham listens to the smooth talk of one guest, Zeb Lewis, who wants to cheat her out of the ranch. She decides under pressure to sell out to him. At this point the movie star's darling daughter decides to tear up some flower beds and when Bob sees what's beneath the flowers, he thinks he's found Oil! Immediately he goes off into crazy- dreams of minklined swimming pools and diamond headlights on his fleet of Cadillacs. But his mother has sold the ranch! Or has she? And is that really oil under the petunias? All comes out and proves they have no oil and do not sell the ranch.
