The school building was small-only 14 by 16 feet-but it was a start for the com- munity of Winifred. This picture is of the school as it looked in 1938 just after the brick portion of the building was completed. The white wooden part of the building had been built in 1917 and 1918. Since the first graduating class in 1929, the school has grown a great deal. This need for more space is being met by the construction of eight new classrooms and a gymnasium to be completed by the fall of 1965. The wooden part will be torn down. 8 JAMES WICKENS Years in Winifred-4 Football-1, 2, 3, 4 Basketball-1, 2, 3, 4 Chorus-1,2, 3, 4 Track-1, 2, 3, 4 All-State Chorus-3,4 Boy's State-3 Class Treas. -1 Class President-4 Junior Prom -3 Grandma's Best Years -3 Mountain Gal -4 Annual Staff-4 Paper Staff-3 Honor Roll Certificate-1, 2, 3, 4 Homecoming King Candidate-1 LARRY SCHAEFFER Years in Winifred-6 Basketball -1, 2, 3, 4 Vice -President -4 Junior Prom -3 Mountain Gal -4 SHARON ARNTZEN Years in Winifred-5 Pep Club-1, 2, 3,4 Pep Club Sec. -3 Pep Club Pres. -4 Chorus-1, 2, 3, 4 Homecoming Queen-3 Carnival Candidate-1 Paper Staff Co-Editor-3 Annual Staff Co-Editor-4 B Honor Roll Certificate-2 Class Secretary-1 Class Vice-President-2 Class President-3 MIEA Delegate-3, 4 Speech Club-2 Junior Prom -3 Mountain Gal -4 Shorthand Award-3 Typing Award-3 All State Chorus-3,4 Alt. Wayne, a teenage millionaire, has everything; A new car, the best of clothing, goes to the best college, plus the prospect of inheriting a million dollars when he turns twenty-one year old. He has it made so what is the problem? Well, problem number 1 is his guardian who controls the purse strings until that magic age of twenty-one. The problem number 2 is his beautiful girlfriend, Dottie Hart, who wants a mink coat and Thunderbird but refuses to wait for them. Wayne decides that if he tells the guardian that they were married instead of engaged then his allowance would increase and Dottie could receive the things she desires. Unfortunately the guardian arrives to meet the bride. This was quite unplanned. Just at this point Dottie decides that the grass is greener elsewhere and leaves. Therefore, the young millionaire is left without a bride or even a fiancee! If Mr. Harris finds this out, he could be left with a mere five hundred dollars a month allowance. Well, Wayne's friend tries to find him a wife for the day but things get pretty confused when Wayne turns up with a couple of wives. But in the meantime there is Mr. Harris's niece, who is be- coming attached to Wayne, but can't do anything because she thinks he is married. But Wayne finally explains to Mr. Harris the whole story and Mr. Harris understands. This leaves Wayne without problems and wives. The field is left open for Mr. Harris's niece. The play was rich in mountain humor. Mountain Gal was a play with a moving human story. The Lindsay family of the Ozarks have a farm, an old truck, and a hired man. Compared to most of the hillbillies, they're rich Ma Lindsay has gone to school about two years and considers herself educated. She thinks so highly of her- self she has become a tyrant. Her special target is Deedee, an orphan girl who has come to work on the Lindsay farm. Ma burns Deedee's books and refuses to allow her to attend school. When Mr. and Mrs. Gordon, tourists from the North, have an accident near the Lindsay farm, Pa Lindsay tries to help them get th ir car started. The Gordons come to the Lindsay farm for dinner and become interested in Deedee. She tells them of her dreams of an education. Meanwhile, Oby, the hired man,-is having an awful time proposing to Sophie, the hired girl on the next farm. Whenever Oby gets Sophie alone, someone interrupts them. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon decide to try to convince the Lindsays to let them take Deedee home with them. They want to educate her and bring her up as their own daughter. Ma Lindsay has no affection for Deedee. Her only concern is for her own daughter, who is really a character! The Lindsays give their consent and Deedee happily goes off with the Gordons and to school. Deedee and Mr. McKay, the Gordon's lawyer, want to get married after Deedee has graduated from college. But in the meantime the Lindsays have come to the big city to see Deedee graduate and Deedee finds out that the Gordons are her real parents. You will be faced with many new and important problems which will require your own knowledge and judgment to solve. I urge all of you who are still in high school to take advantage of the educational and social opportunities before you. Prepare yourself for the life ahead and you will increase your chances for success. SALUTATORIAN Here it is the end of our school year. To the begin- ning freshmen it may seem like a long time before it will be over, but to the graduating senior who looks back it seems very short. That is why I would like to see you underclassmen work hard and try to get the best out of your high school years. We seniors see now, as you will when you are seniors, that it would have been much better if we would have worked harder. It is the time now for you students to prepare your- selves for the future by being worthwhile citizens and working up to your capabilities. 41 BACCALAUREATE Baccalaureate services were held Sunday, May 23rd. THE YEAR’S WORK At the first of the school year of 1964-65, elections for various positions in the Annual Staff were held with Sharon Arntzen and James Scoville being elected as Editors. Barbara Sparks and Larry Schaef- fer became Business Managers. Dar Heggem and Roger Reppe were given the role of Sports Editors and Shirley Carson and James Wickens assumed the position of Photographers. The Annual Staff was busy during the year holding activities that would earn the cash necessary for the production of this annual. The first step to accomplish this was the selling of advertisement space to the local businesses and many of the businesses in Lewistown. Other ways to raise this money were through sponsoring bake sales, selling Christmas trees, and selling pens. The work on the annual itself was done by the whole class on various evenings and after school. This was done in order to reach the deadlines set up by the American Yearbook Company. The layout of each page in the annual on dummy sheets was our first project. Articles were written up on various subjects concerned in this annual. The pictures were then cropped, blown up, or cut down in order to fit the spaces provided for them. We all worked very hard for the purpose of making this annual a success. 46 PAPER STAFF STANDING: Howard Tuss, Gene Thompson, Dick Foster, Spencer Peterson, Linda Fluegel.
