We, the seniors of 1962, wish to dedicate this an- nual, The Red Raider, to the School Board of the Winifred High School who have given their time and services so generously. WRllNClllPAlLfS 53 The year 1961-62 has been a busy one. Our students in speech, music, athletics, publications and other school activities have set and, in many cases, have broken existing records. Scholastically the students of 1961-62 have also done very well and several have established exceptionally high averages. Members of this year's Annual Staff and their sponsor are to be congratulated for the production of this fine annual. lts colorful pages depict school life and spirit of this period. The book itself will gain in value as the years go by. The undersigned wishes to take this opportunity to wish each of the departing seniors avery happy, successful, and healthy future. Also best wishes go to the underclassmen. Sincerely, k '11F' MR. EUGENE COMES Carroll College Helena, Montana Civics - Economics U. X fl.,llF1DII UTC DR fl N ,fv To those who have not yet com- pleted high school, make the best of your high school years. They will make it possible for you to obtain knowledge thatwill help you through- out your life. Knowledge is one of the most important things in your life. Every miraculous thing in life today was a physical possibility in the days of Ramses, Caesar, and Charlemagne. The raw material and basic elements were there then. The difference is in the knowledge to get and make use of them. Your social life is also very important. C7wf7Z9Z6,7C High school is one of the most important parts of anyone's life. It is up to the individual in high school to get the most out of it by participating in as many classes and activities as possible. During high school it may seem you have plenty of time to round out your personality later, but don't be fooled, high school is over with be- fore a person realizes it. Best of luck to all my classmates and also to all the underclassmen. SENJIOR CLASS HHSTORY ln the fall of 1958 Beatrice Arthur, Alice Asbjornson, James Gibbons, Betty Hamil- ton, Mary Ellen Heggem, Ronnie Heggem, Geraldine Jimmerson, Gail Philp, Dwight Phillips, Jean Reppe, Sandra Schroeder, Larry Udelhoven, Judy Putro, Bob Wherley, Bob Wickens and Cheryl Wilcox entered Winifred High School as freshmen, unaware of the many gradual changes that would take place in our lives as we broadened our knowledge. Throughout our four years in high school we have played an important part in curricular and extracurricular activities as well as giving serious consideration to improving ourselves. Chosen to lead the freshman class were Dwight, President: Mary Ellen, Vice Presi- dentg Cheryl, Secretary-Treasurerg and Mrs. Johnson as class sponsor. Mary Ellen and Bob Wickens were candidates from our class for Homecoming Queen and Gridiron King respectively. Jean and Betty were chosen as candidates for Carnival Queen. We returned in the fall of '59, gaining David Skinner who transferred from Fergus County High School. We started the year by electing Bob Wickens, Presidentg Betty, Vice Presidentg Jean, Secretary-Treasurer, and Mr. Fretheim as sponsor. The sopho- more class candidates for Gridiron King and Homecoming Queen were Bob Wherley and Mary Ellen. Alice and Gail were chosen as Carnival Queen candidates. During the course of our junior year our activities and studies were increased. Se- lected to lead the class were Mary Ellen, Presidentg Larry, Vice Presidentg Gail, Sec- retary, Jean, Treasurerg and Mr. Lehman and Miss Mathis as class sponsors. As juniors we published the Prairie Dog Chatter which received a superior rating from the- M. I. E. A. The co-editors were Jean and Beatrice. Mary Ellen and Jean went to the M. I. E. A. Convention in Missoula in the fall. Mary Ellen received the Silver Key Award for her outstanding work on the paper. Bob Wherley was crowned Gridiron King while Alice was our candidate for Homecoming Queen. Beatrice was elected candidate for Carnival Queen. In the fall of the year we presented to the public our class play, Cupid in Pigtails. In December of our junior year we lost our beloved classmate Alice Asbjornson who died as a result of a car accident. In the spring of the year our class sponsored the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom with the theme Dark Moon. Cheryl and Dwight were selected by the faculty to attend High School Week at Montana State College. Larry and Dwight earned the right to participate in the State interscho- lastic Track Meet in Missoula. Our class was represented in the high school rodeo by Beatrice and Bob Wherley. When we returned for our last year we were more fully aware that our future ac- complishments depended on our own initiative and desire to succeed. Jean was elected President, Larry, Vice Presidentg Mary Ellen, Secretaryg Bob Wherley, Treasurer, and Mr. Bergum, class sponsor. Ronnie was chosen to be Gridiron King by the school while Jean was a candidate for Homecoming Queen. Mary Ellen was chosen by the class as a candidate for Carnival Queen. The setting up of the annual began with Dwight and Jean chosen by the staff as co-editors. The senior class play, Commencement was presented on March 17 and 18 with a dance following. Cheryl and Dwight again at- tended High School Week along with Bob Wickens. Gail Philp, Judy Putro, and Geraldine Jimmerson transferred to Fergus so we were left with only 13 members for our senior year Jim, Mary Ellen and Jean were proud to represent the school chorus at All-State Chorus in Missoula. Jean won the Betty Crocker Homemaking Award for senior girls and also went to Missoula for the State Interscholastic Speech Meet. Dwight and Larry again earned the right to participate in the State lnterscholastic Track Meet in Missoula where Larry garnered a fifth place in the high hurdles. Beatrice and Bob Wherley again represented us at the high school rodeo. We are proud to have Dwight as Valedictorian and Cheryl as Salutatorian as they compiled a 96 and a 95. 1 average respectively. To highlight our four years of learning and adventures we took a trip to Yellowstone National Park. We feel we have attended a high school that has given us a broad background for learning to live and be successful in this modern world. We are proud to be the 1962 graduates of Winifred High School.
