SENIOR PLAY BOLTS AND NUTS SENIOR TRIP YELLOWSTONE PARK Make the most of your high school career. High School is a once in a life- time opportunity that offers basic knowl- edge in order that you may continue on to a higher education or have a better chance of obtaining a good job. Broaden your span of knowledge by increasing your interests. Education is a priceless treasure which can never be taken from you. VALEDICTORIAN There are numerous interesting mys- terious, and wonderful advancements being made in the scientific world of today. In the near future the great and small problems of this world will rest squarely upon the shoulders of students graduating from high school. Let us be prepared for this tremendous responsibility by taking full advantage of the high school education that is offered. Remember, the future is what we make it. SALUTATORIAN CLASS HISTORY In the fall of 1956 fourteen meek but determined freshmen took their first big step on the ladder to success. They were: Bill Rich, Jimmy Pearson, Joey Tuss, Edward Mendel, John Scoville, David Stulc. Homer Arthur, James Arthur, Jerry Simac, Virginia Asbjorn- son, Barbara Brooks, Shirley Erlandson, Marion Gibbons, and Sandra Olsen. Having sur- vived initation without casualities they looked forward with enthusiasm to an eventful year. Selected to lead them on their perilous journey through the Freshman year were: Edward Mendel, President; Virginia Asbjornson, Vice President; Shirley Erlandson, Sec- retary-Treasurer; and Chuck Kettering, Class Sponsor. Fortunately no one slipped from the ladder as they ventured one step higher into the Sophomore year. Frank Vucasin of Great Falls, Montana was gained, raising the number of students to sixteen. Class officers elected were; Edward Mendel, President; David Stulc, Vice President; Virginia Asbjornson, Secretary-Treasurer. Thomas Boulet was selected sponsor. Shirley Erlandson was chosen Homecoming Queen of 1957. With the Sophomore year behind them, they ventured even higher on the perilous ladder into their Junior year. Two new students, Lester Andrews of Lewistown and Wil- bert Hunt of Novia Scotia, Canada, were gained and Frank Vucasin lost. Edward Mendel was elected President; Barbara Brooks, Vice President, and Shirley Erlandson, Secretary- Treasurer. Class Sponsors chosen were Fred Arnst and Thomas Boulet. The Junior Class Play, Come Out of the Closet, directed by Thomas Boulet proved to be a great success. Red Sails in the Sunset. the theme chosen for the Junior Prom, highlighted the golden year with a very successful Junior-Senior Banquet preceding it. Virginia Asbjornson was selected as a candidate for Girls State and Shirley Erlandson, Alternate. Edward Mendel was chosen to attend Boys State. The Prairie Dog Chatter, published by the Junior Class and sponsored by Mrs. Vernon Johnson, received an All-State rating. The class of fifteen students having lost Lester Andrews eagerly took the last big step to the top of the educational ladder. Class officers chosen to guide the way were . Vir- ginia Asbjornson, President; Shirley Erlandson, Vice President; Barbara Brooks, Secretary; Wilbert Hunt, Treasurer; and Mr. Bergum, Class Sponsor. Virginia Asbjornson was hon- ored as Homecoming Queen of 1960 and Wilbert Hunt was chosen Gridiron King. Bar- bara Brooks was crowned Carnival Queen. The Senior Class sponsored the Christmas Ball. Bolts and Nuts, the Senior Play, was a smashing hit. Baccalaureate was held at the Winifred High School with Father Patrick Tarrant as guest speaker. Graduation com- menced on May 21, 1960 at the Winifred High School, with Harriet Miller as guest speaker, Virginia Asbjornson as Valedictorian and Shirley Erlandson, Salutatorian. The class toured Yellowstone Park on their senior trip. CLASS COLORS - Red and White CLASS FLOWERS - Red and White Roses CLASS MOTTO - Forward Ever, Backward Never CLASS PROPHECY Returning home late from my high school graduation party, I fell into a deep sleep from which I thought I would never awaken. The peculiar thing about this sleep was that I dreamed of no one but my high school graduating class and their positions in the world in the year 1980. The events which happened to each of them were so real that I must put them down on paper for others to read. I shall hereby relate them in the order in which they happened: Shirley Erlandson, who was able to continue in her chosen career as a Secretary-at- Law, was working for a firm composed of outstanding lawyers and private detectives. Their current case involved the theft of Shirley’s high school diploma, without which he was emotionally disturbed because of its great sentimental value. She threatened to leave the firm if they didn't find it and prosecute the culprits. The loss to the firm would be so great that they would have to close shop. This would be a blow to Philatelist James Jeffro Arthur who owned a large percent of this firm. I glimpsed James pass- ing through Lewistown on his way to lower Kenya in hot pursuit of a rare stamp valued at $750,000 which was reputedly designed by Cleopatra. Acquisition of this stamp would complete James's collection and thus bring into reality his dream of retiring on the ranch of his brother Homer. Homer had married a long-time secret admirer who had been a tremendously helpful factor in his success story. He was in direct competition with David Stulc for control of the North Moccasin farm and oil area. David Stulc, upon graduation, had immediately returned to the farming game. His ambition to rule the area north of Winifred was realized when he gained full control of the Spur Line Railroad between Hilger and Winifred; and in addition, he established a monopoly on all communications and electrical service in the area. When asked his immediate plans, he replied that his next objective was to stop the Missouri River from flowing downstream until he received proper revenue from other agencies concerned. This, of course, would prove disastrous to Barbara Brooks who was raising quarter horses on her ranch located next to rhe Missouri. Barbara's love-life had left her bitter and she never married. Aside from raising horses, she was very active in community society and she wrote society columns for the Winifred Herald. Included in her columns ever so often were Gerald Simac and Marion Gibbons. Gerald was acting as Master of Ceremonies to the International Quiz Program, Who Dropped the Bomb on Siberia or Thud. He was soon to complete his thirteenth year of college and it was his ambition to become an elementary teacher. Marion Gibbons completed two years of college; but being dissatisfied with it, she became a bubble blower on the famous Lawrence Welk Show which is now in its 25th year. Mr. Welk is contemplating raising Marion's working standards by supplying her with a new brand of bubble-blowing material called Squish! A great admirer of the Lawrence Welk Show was Edward Mendel, head of the Atomic Energy Commission at Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He had published a treatise supporting the uneventuality of a peaceful co-existance between the female and male. Opposing this theory quite dramatically was Sandra Olsen, who, after completing two years of college and teaching for several years, married the principal. She now resides at Boise, Idaho with her family of sixteen. A very close neighbor of Sandra's was Virginia Asbjornson, who, to everyone's surprise, did not marry her high school sweetheart. Disillusioned by love and her musical experience, she decided to trace the ancestry of the nut-chuk species of squirrels found in Idaho. Virginia kept very close track of her classmates, and was very proud when she read that Jim Pearson had broken an All-Time record in the mile with a stupendous 3.30. Follow- ing this event, she discovered that Jim spent a leisurely life of fishing and boating on the Missouri River. He maintained that the tremendous physical effort required for his record- breaking mile had exhausted him so that he would have to rest for the remainder of his life. Virginia also read in the papers that Bill Rich had inherited a fortune from a rich uncle and was, at the time, enjoying a vacation around the world in his own helicopter. What she did not read, however, was that Bill had been waylaid on a prominent South Sea Island and that his long-cherished dream of an Around-The-World-Cruise may indefinitely -be postponed. It was no surprise to Virginia to hear that Wilbert Hunt had married his high school sweetheart. They were presently residing in Nova Scotia, Canada, where Wilbert had fulfilled his life-long ambition of owning an automobile shop. He was world famous for the tune-up jobs he did on racing cars for the Indianapolis 500. Wilbert has evolved the principle of driving in reverse to totally confuse the opposition. John Scoville, a hot-rod racer, claimed that he was dissatisfied with the way in which Wilbert tuned his automobile for the 500. He claimed that Wilbert not only reversed the direction of his car but reversed the direction of rotation of the crankshaft in his racer which made him go forward instead of backward thereby causing John to lose the race. John is currently sueing Wilbert for the equivalent amount of the prize money. An innovation of John’s was to install a tandem seat for his wife so that she would be able to accompany him to all of the races since she was an avid sports fan. John, after many years of racing glory, decided to settle down in his old home town of Winifred. The Winifred High School, at this time is under the direction of Mr. John Joseph Tuss, principal. Mr. Tuss claimed that his school, which had grown from the size of 60 when he attended to the present enrollment of 500, was the best class B school in Montana. When asked what his plans were, Mr. Tuss replied, I've got it made! Amanda Arthur Betty Devine J. O.
