Here were open fields and meadows and rows of cotton stretching endlessly in the warmth of the Southern sun. Here were great plantation homes, filled with songs of happiness, of another people caught up in a different way of life, a peaceful life of beauty and romance. Here also were battle- fields, drenched with the blood of brother fighting brother and the tears of a nation blinded by hate as a people fought for a way of life they knew and loved. Defeat, destruction, and the struggle to re- build broken dreams and lives-Here was a land of hardship and determination, a land that blossomed under the patient hands of time and effort. The open fields have given way to modern highways, to growing cities and steel skyscrapers. The tears shed now are for one nation, joined together under one flag, a nation filled with a sense of achievement and a confidence in an ever brightening future. And the future is important, but without yesterday, the stepping stones to tomorrow, there could have been no tomorrow. We sincerely hope that this, the 1968 RAMEUR, will, through thoughts and pictures, awaken within each being a new sense of pride and belonging in the South-A Memory and a Challenge.
