Here were great plantation homes, filled with songs of happiness, of another people caught up in a different way of life, a peaceful life of beauty and romance. Here also were battle- fields, drenched with the blood of brother fighting brother and the tears of a nation blinded by hate as a people fought for a way of life they knew and loved. Defeat, destruction, and the struggle to re- build broken dreams and lives-Here was a land of hardship and determination, a land that blossomed under the patient hands of time and effort. The open fields have given way to modern highways, to growing cities and steel skyscrapers. The tears shed now are for one nation, joined together under one flag, a nation filled with a sense of achievement and a confidence in an ever brightening future. And the future is important, but without yesterday, the stepping stones to tomorrow, there could have been no tomorrow. We sincerely hope that this, the 1968 RAMEUR, will, through thoughts and pictures, awaken within each being a new sense of pride and belonging in the South-A Memory and a Challenge. Along with the struggle to reach the highest goal possible there are numerous challenges which must be met. Although many of these remain unresolved, much progress has been made toward attaining the aim of an outstanding school. Starting with the mere framework of a dream, with only its poten- tiality to pave the road to success, this dream has become a reality through the tireless, never-ceasing efforts, of one dedicated indi- vidual. Though many have been a part of Wingfield's growth and development, there is one, the backbone of the constant struggle, whose encouragement and understanding have undergirded our ef- forts. Because of work for and with us-because of time and wisdom unselfishly given-it is with sincere respect and with deepest admi- ration that we dedicate the 1968 Rameur to our principal, Mr. D. T. Under the leadership of Mr. Robert W. King, the PTA enjoyed a profitable and inspiring year. It can sincerely be said that the PTA has achieved its objective, that being: to weld a strong school and community spirit by helping our students to realize their fullest mental, moral, and physical potential. Requiring a combination of the skills of counselor, teacher, and administrator, these difficult capacities are essential in a school to be ranked with lVIississippi's best. Certainly Wingfield is among these, and our fine leadership claims much credit in her rapid rise. Good as fresh perked! as 24 Dynamic Duo out for lunch! Skipping? 30 days. Secretaries Render Valuable Assistance Sharing the burden of paperwork which finds its way into the offices at Wingfield are its three secre- taries-Mrs. Anne Broome, Attendance Secretaryg Mrs. Lucille Connell, Secretary to the Principalg and Mrs. Mildred Thomas, Secretary to the Coun- selors. Their task is almost continuous and requires speed and accuracy. Truly champions of their field, they are to be commended for their uncomplaining diligence. The courtesy of the secretaries is es- pecially appreciated by all who find it necessary to ask assistance of them. Mrs. Connell prepares for school year. Mimeographing is a daily chore. Counselors Prove invaluable Despite many other deficiencies, high school students are usually good at one thing at least-they complain often and loudly. Helping these unhappy people is the task of the counselors. They have the responsibility of molding character in preparation for college or work after graduation, and, at the same time, of keeping students interested and involved in school activities. This complex job, which calls for wisdom and dedication of the highest caliber, has been performed admirably this year through the cooperation of our fine counselors and student body. The variety of con- tent in English courses during the high school years is very important in developing character among young adults. Along with the usual grammar study provided for students, sophomores engage in an in- troduction to various types of literature while ,lun- iors devote their time to American literature and authors. Shakespeare and other English authors are studied by Seniors. The teachers at Wingfield do an excellent job of introducing young people to literature and gram- mar and in maintaining their interest throughout a course. With sincere aims of encouraging a sense of in- dividual learning in students, all three courses pro- vide excellent background for college-hound students. S. An extracurricular organization stemming from the social studies department is the Junior Historical So- ciety. This honor group is a credit to both our school and par- ticularly to this section. This year Wingfield was very fortunate to be one of the few schools in Mississippi that offered a program extending through advanced chemistry as studied in nearby colleges. Yes, our education was prepared for us and all we had to do was accept it. Our paths were made clear through ex- ploring the uncertain, discovering the inevitable, and learn- ing what makes this world tick, Coach Berry illustrates his lesson. 34 Work, work, work. Their Work is exhibited in several art showings throughout the year includ- ing the Arts Festival in the spring. Students with musical inclination enjoy the study of choral music directed by Mrs. Massey. The concert choir com- prised of selected members perform for group func- tions in and out of the state. For those interested in the instrumental aspects of the music program place special emphasis on the Falcon Band. Band Director, Mr. Arthur Goodsell, requires the needed ability and discipline from his band members to accomplish their first rate quality sound. These are words often heard resounding from the boys' side of the gym by Coach Buddy Bounds. The Physical Education Department strives to increase the strength and endurance of Wing- fieldis boys. Working to help the girls achieve ten push-ups by the end of the year, Miss Moore and Miss Craig seem to stay busy. In addition to exercises they lead the girls in such sports as volleyball, basket- ball, softball, and the all-time favorite, jumping rope. Student Council Cuides School Activities Emphasizing the importance of strong represen- tation for the student body in the affairs of the school, the student council endeavored to sponsor worthwhile activities and provide a link of co- operation between the student body and the faculty, under the capable and energetic sponsorship of Mr. Dan Merritt. Council officers traveled many miles and attended numerous workshops and meet- ings to gain valuable information on Council af- fairs. The Council coordinated Homecoming and Fal- con Follies activities and supervised elections and honor points in the spring. Projects to promote school spirit, including prizes for the best deco- rated homeroom doors during football season, and the selection of the Boy- and Girl-of-the-Month ranked high on its list of accomplishments. One of its most successful undertakings was the col- lection of canned goods for the janitorial work- ers during the Christmas season. Then the Falcons managed a drive and moved the ball to the Murrah 37 by carries mainly by Slay. The drive ended on a Falcon fumble. Several series of downs later, Murrah started a drive which ended in a touchdown for them in the last 12 seconds of the half.
