MRS. SUE Y. FULGHAM II ■« Mrs. Sue Fulgham came to Wingate in 1961- During her 13 years at Wingate College, she has taught speech and drama. In addition to her being the director of the College Theater from 1961 until 1966. she was very active in the North Carolina Speech and Drama Associa- tion. Mrs. Fulgham is also a member of the Southern Speech Communication Association. She was selected as a member of the Outstanding Educators of America in 1971. The task of the S.G.A., though long and some- times tedious, is quite rewarding. The S.G.A. sponsors: rock concerts, dances, road rallyes. and other major events on campus, including movies, sponsoring tutoring services, planning talent shows and producing the Miss Wingate Pageant. Phi Beta Lambda. 172 DR. SMITH PLANS TO RETIRE IN JUNE 1 173 Dr. Budd E. Smith, president of Wingate College since 1953, has an- nounced plans for his retirement — to become effective June 1, 1974. In the summer of 1953 Dr. Budd Elmon Smith arrived to assume duties as Wingate ' s tenth president. The Wingate campus, in 1953, consisted of a half-dozen buildings on 33 acres of land. The $300,000 plant was mortgaged. Today Wingate College has a campus of over 300 acres; more than 40 permanent buildings — including a model library — and a valuation of approximately $17.5-million. The institution is debt-free. During his presidency at Wingate, Dr. Smith has been a leader in local community affairs. In 1961 he was named Man of the Year by the Monroe-Union County Chamber of Commerce and in 1972 served a term as president of the chamber. He has served as chairman of the Union County Industrial Commission since 195 7, and has promoted industrial growth of the area. Academically, under Dr. Smith ' s leadership. Wingate College has become widely known and respected for the excellence of its academic programs and is today considered to be one of the finest two-year colleges in the nation. A native of Benson, Johnston County, North Carolina, Dr. Smith is married to the former Ethel Knott, who has worked closely with her husband at Wingate as the college librarian and the college hostess. The Smith ' s have two sons: James Fielding Smith, a Ph. D. candidate in California and William Budd Smith, a senior at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. After June, 1974, the Smith ' s will make their retirement home in Johnston County, near Benson. 174 Dr. and Mrs. Smith with His help have worked tirelessly to lead in the erection at Wingate of a truly Golden Temple to which the youth will continue to come, many to find a new dedication to a higher citizenship than we have known.
