Burris Austin- Memorial Auditorium January 27, 1969 Remarks made by Mr. Joel Herren Shakespeare, in Julius Ceasar, said: His life was gentle, and the elements so mix'd in him that nature might stand and say to all the world 'This was a man! ' No more fitting tribute could be paid the life of the man We honor here than this quotation from one of his most beloved authors. Thirty-five years ago I arrived at Wingate College and for the first time met Dean C. C. Burris. Already he had been serving the students of Wingate College for fifteen years. This association was to continue in an active role for twenty- eight more years as dean, president, and always - regardless of title or duty - as teacher. And now, sadly representing those who sat in his classrooms, I would like to share with you some of my memories of this great teacher. When you enrolled in a class taught by Mr. Burris you were not only introduced to the beauty of the English literature for here you were exposed to the real values and mean- ings of life. Here you were made constantly aware that learning was not an end in itself, but a means which allowed you to better serve your fellow man. Many of his students were able to hear him from the pulpits which he capably and faithfully served as long as he was physically able. I believe it a tribute to say that from the pulpit he gave us the four gospels, Milton and Shakespeare, and in the classroom he gave us Milton, Shakespeare and the four gospels. He was the master craftsman in using each to augment the other. Mr. Burris' students were constantly amazed at the wide range of interests and ideas found in the man: Shakespeare, the Twenty-third Psalm, the girls' basketball team which he so ably coached, Tennyson, a student-faculty play, Browning, a game of tennis, the Harmony of the Gospels, Milton, the Union County Public School system, the minor English Poets, his beloved Danny Boy . Yet, in all of this, his paramount interest was in the student as an individual. He was always there insisting that you do your very best, exulting in your achievements, and suffering with you in your reverses. Never did the star of this man shine brighter than when he was befriending the student who came with little more than a desire for an education. From him you could expect a pat on the back when you needed it, wise counsel when you sought it, the ability to discern and seek out those who needed but didxft ask for the help he was able to give. He sought to serve the student in every way possible - - and when this called for financial assistance he willingly provided that. And now I want to quote from Ben Ionson in his tribute to Shakespeare. I think that this is entirely appropriate and fitting to the life of the one we honor: 'Thou art a monument without a tomb . . . He is not of an age, but for all time. Craven Cullorn Burris: Your memorial is not confined to this place or this time. Rather, your memorial is written in the hearts of the thousands who were privileged to have called you teacher - counsellor - friend. ,AFL In Memoriam Craven Cullom Burris March 6, 1891 - January 24, 1969 Trustees Mr. E. This year special emphasis is being placed on gaining practical knowledge and experience that will be helpful when the students become professional teachers. The students are exposed to speakers, such as guidence counselors, who seek to give them a better insight into the life of a teacher.. They also perform such useful services as babysitting for par- ents who are at the local P.T.A. meet- ing. While most students are relaxing in the warmth of their rooms, Coach Ronald Christopher's diamond boys are out in the final cold days of Winter pre- paring for the season ahead. Soccer The Soccer team, only in its second year, finished the season with a record any team would be proud to own. Fif- teen wins and no losses for the regular season made Coach Ronnie Smarr very proud of his team, and Wingate College very proud of their Bulldogs. Key factors to the success of the Bull- dogs were their improved skills, good conditioning, and a strong school spirit to back up their every play. Three sophomores will lead the way: Mack Maxwell, Dan Maples, and captain Marc Gooden. Coach Connell is optimistic for an- other winning season. Coach Connell gives captain Marc Gooden tips on his grip. Grip is important, especially in golf It's a good lie, but watch the divot Mack Maxwell, Bud Moore, Marc Gooden, Dan Maples Cheerleaders Not many students at Wingate can claim afliliation with as many sports as our enthusiastic cheerleaders. These girls certainly cannot be classi- fied as pure spectators because they have participated in the real sense of the word, Every team needs an extra push that instills confidence and de- sire and our cheerleaders are just the ones to do it. Headed by chief Beverly Baker, the squad consists of Marcia Ross, Becky Harrison, Leigh Crawford, Barbara Ward, Jeanie Carlan, Kay Miller, Margaret Rich, and Debby Taylor. Miss Nancy Langdon was faculty sponsor. 1 nz. Lung power. They,re behind every play. The cheerleader squad had some new members at this game. 138 ff' ae Watch the game, girls!
