Being typical of all games, and since it is our chief sport here at Wingate, we, the Gate staff, have chosen the basketball theme to be carried out in our book. By the way of correlative thinking, we would like to call your attention to two games that have been played in which we have taken part: Fifty years ago Wingate Junior College began a career which may be likened to a game. The first half has been reached in that 1946 marks the Golden Anniversary of our Alma Mater. Fifty golden years of service have been devoted to the physical, mental and spiritu.al development of young men and women who go out to occupy cherished places in the world of tomorrow. Our heads are reverently bowed and a silent prayer escapes our lips in the hope that the coming years will reveal even more progressiveness and greater marks of service. We pay tribute to you, Wingate Junior College, on this happy occasion. The second game, if it be referred to as such, is the record of each individual student while at Wingate. For some the last quarter is being playedg for some the second quarter. Have we won? Even though we carry no trophies from the field or have no laurels placed uponfour brow, we have not lost if we have put our all into the contest and have played fairly and squarely the part that was ours. It is the sincere hope of the entire staff that this book will serve as an impetus to your reminiscence of your days spent at Wingate. . 8 MR. and MRS. J. B. SPITTLE, SR. DEDICATIUN For your trueness to Wingate: your loyalty to the highest ideals of life which binds us all in fellofzoshigx and for your contribution to our happiness through your 'many clots of kindness, We salute you, MR. and MRS. J. B. SPITTLE, SR. THE ALMA MATER In the land of Carolina Far and wide her sons and daughters 'Neath the sky so blue, Bear the gold and blue, Stands our noble Alma Mater ' Proudly rally 'round her banner, Glorious to view. . If X M. lm, xiii Administration fl Xsgi C- sf.,F,irHS 616- ' English A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT WINGATE SCHOOL was authorized by the Union Baptist Association at its fall session in 1895. It opened its doors for students in the fall of 1896, and the charter was granted in 1897. The school was operated in connection with the county school system until 19173 although, the property was owned and controlled by the Baptists. From 1917 until 1923, the school was carried on by the Union, Mecklen- burg-Cabarrus and Pee Dee Associations. Later, the Stanly, Anson, and Montgomery Associations in North Carolina and the Chesterfield in South Carolina became affiliated. In 1923, Wingate School became a Junior College and the North Carolina Baptist Convention assumed ownership and control. In 1930, the property was turned back to the original owners and has been operated by them ever since. At present, the Baptist State Convention contributes to current support. The College attempts to serve all who are interested in an education but is especially interested in young people whose means are limited if they have ability and ambition. Its first objective is to thoroughly prepare students who transfer to Senoir Colleges and Universities. This object is being reached every year. The second objective is to serve young people who plan to go out into the walks of life immediately upon Junior College graduation. The Christian atmosphere prevades on the campus and shows itself later in the attitudes and accomplishments of its students. In the fall of this year, the 50th anniversary will be held and a program is now under way to have several buildings under construction by that time. The following buildings make up the plan: Library, Boys' Dormitory, Girls' Dormitory, Dining Room, and Infirmary. Wingate Junior College faces the future with hope and determination and plans to continue its splendid record for the service of humanity.
