GRADE ll, John baton Kenneth Lane Max Mxtchell Bxlly Bob Lyons Manon Sunms Ronxue Meharry Budgxe Keyes Jack Lxdester Bob Swxck Nancy lrvnn Janet Hunsmger Phyllxs Dooley Josephxne Stephens Joan Goode Mrs Zahnle Sponsor Ehzabeth Fletcher Patsy Bratton Teeme Funk Jean Kxrkpatnck ,cf GRADE 11 Loretta Hununger, Lavon Eads Merle Blackford Rex Howard Jaxnea Sunms Bxlly Davidson, Fred Shull Dale Jone Russell Foley Pat Dazey Martha Murdock, Mary Jane Wxlson, Bxll Lxdelter Carolyn Funk Sponsor Mrs McBeth Kenneth Bane, Blanche Fitzwater Ocxe Shelton 18 HISTORY OF WINGATE HIGH SCHOOL The people of Wmgate have always been concerned over the educat1on of the1r ch1ldren S1nce 182.6 the year the fxrst settler came unt1l the present tzme there has been f1ve schools 1n the town The f1rst buxlt m 1854 was a one room log bu1ld1ng located mn the woods on the farm owned by Doug Grenard about a m1le south of W1ngate It was furmshed w1th desks made from rough hewn logs and conta1ned other rustxc eqmpment Th1s log structure was apparantly 1nsuff1c1ent for the needs of the qu1ckly grow1ng town because another one was bu1lt two years later xn 1856 It too was a log structure and was erected 1n a fxeld west of Harlan Gllkey s present res1 dence Because the town was grow1ng 1n all d1rect1ons and the settlers were mtent on xmprovlng the1r way of lxfe they bu1lt a large frame schoolhouse about where the H H Gardner res dence now stands Thxs was m 1860 and the new schoolhouse was a very fme advancement for educat1on Thls school was used untxl 1896 when the town bu1lt a school of brlck Th1s bulld 1ng st1ll stands as strong as ever and 1S now the storage buxldlng of Utterback and Stockdale we st of the ra1lroad depot Levandowsk1 and Son The adv1sory board conslsted of Frank Cottrell Abraham W Dazey W E Cowan C W Van Cleave was the trustee when the buxldlng was buxlt and consol1dated Durlng the t1me the new bu1ld1ng was be1ng bu1lt school was held 1n the old schoolhouse the room above the restaurant and the f1rehouse The corner stone for the new H1gh School was land 1n August 1907 and was celebrated w1th a band concert and speaker ln the sprmg of 1908 the fxrst semor class of Wmgate Hzgh School held thexr commencement exerc1ses 1n the new school bu1ld1ng A few days prev1ous to commencement M111 Ohve Rowe a member of the hxgh school faculty entertamed the semors mem bers of the faculty and trustee Van Cleave and w1fe to a three course dmner at the Cottage Hotel owned by Mr and Mrs B S Thompson The sen1ors were Ina Carney Gates Maud Auter and Ray Dazey At the tmme the super1ntendent was Mr Hall The only dedlcatxon of the bulldmg known was at the tune the chplomas were presented to the sen1ors 9 The present building was built in 1907 by the contractors, l Durxng the txme we have been 1n school a few changes have been made xn the buxldmg The class of 1937 and 1938 w1dened the entrance and set the light posts ln the spnng of 1939 the semor boys hauled gravel, m1xed cement and la1d the c1rcular wall The class of 1941 bought the cyclorama for the stage whlch stxll IS 1n good cond1t1on Thzs class hoped followmg classes would be able to add a front curtam but the war wlth 1ts shortages prevented th1s Speakmg of curtams remmds me of an event whlch took place The J'un1or class was ready to put on then' play when all at once state f1re 1n spectors showed up and sa1d they couldn t have It unless they had a door 1n the back of the assembley Th1s was done and used several months as a hole 1n the wall W1th thas new door It was possxble to move the hbrary from the front of the assembly to where It 15 now In 1940 the room below the bottom steps to the base ment was the Vocat1onal Agnculture room and the class was four years here Mr Brown was taken mto the army and ln 1944 the room was turned mto a workshop under Mr Kmg He held classes of 7 and 8 In 1946 lt was turned mto a recrea t1on room wxth p1ng pong tables and a place for yell leaders to pract1ce The same year the room opposlte the recreat1on room was pet1t1oned for mus1c and art The same year a Home Econom1cs lutchen was made to adjom the old kxtchen because we were serv1ng hot lunches to over a hundred every day Mrs Al1ce Hodgson and V1olet Dlxon presxded and could they cook P1CtUreS of graduat1on classes have been moved from assembly and put 1n hbrary Also many banners wluch have been won by outstandmg teams of yesteryear mcludmg the baseball trophy won th1s year have been put up 1n the assembly We needed a room for athletlc supphes so they made a room under the maln sta1rs If there 15 a square 1nch of space not 1n use 1n good old Wmgate H1gh we wonder where It IS Z0 taught by Mr. Brown who also taught at New Richrnond. MONTGOMERY COUNTY BASEBALL CHAMPIONS, 1948 Z7 COUNTY BASEBALL CHAMPIONS The baseball team had a very successful season th1s year In the League we played exght games and won s1x Before the League started we won Z out of 3 pract1ce games Because a four way t1e between Wxngate New Rmchmond Darlmgton and Waynetown we won the tze at the d1amond 1n Mxlhgan Park Craw fordsvxlle New Market had won 1n the southern half so we had to and the score 14 3 proves that W1ngate was by far the champs Two home runs were knocked by Jack L1dester and Max M1tche1l A fmre was bu1lt 1n the school yard that evemng and nurnerous celebratxons took place The next day an assembly was called to celebrate the wm w1th speeches on sportsmansh1p P1ctures were taken followed by a rxde around town on the fxre truck The Team was also treated to two dmners by George Funk and Mr Hedge Z8 ' . of beat them to be County Champions.
