Someone at the bottom of the ladder and has to work the way to the top. A Freshman is ... Someone who is fully motivated and ready to go. A Freshman is ... It Takes Pride To Make A Team With The Best Lady Bears In The volleyball program this year was exciting be- cause the Lady Bears were so eager to learn and ap- ply their skills in games. They hustled to offense and defense, and listened to the coach (defense 88, x defense, dink to the sideline, jumpserve, etc.) The support from the fans was appreciated. They were small in height but big in heart. They had all the ingredients of becoming state qualifiers; a strong press, great coaching, many talented players, alot of hustle, experience and fan support. The guards were deadly at what they did, the inside people played with determination, and the two coaches inspired the players at all times. The 5 starters were: Delvin Yazzie - deadly 3 pt. gunner; Brian Yazza - inside penetrator; Roy Edison - clutch shooter; Harry Yazzie - inside defensive player; Billy James - strong determined inside player. The five who finished out the season were Brenna Yazza, freshman; Michelle Sloan, senior; Vikki Benally, senior; Tinnia Martin, junior and Helena Yazzie, freshman. It was more than just cheering for the team, it was having school spirit both on and off the court. With the assistance of Mrs. Thompson, the sponsor, the girls kept busy promoting enthusiasm. They sold spirit ribbons, cups, made posters and had bake sales _ and fry bread sales at concessions. On game days, they — wore their uniforms. As a group, they performed service _ projects for the school, helped in recruiting and partici- _ pated in the air band contest. With a few good breaks, the win-loss ratio could have been 10 and 10 or better. Five games were lost by 3 points or less and three games were lost by 9 or less. The Bear’s defense was the high point of the season, while poor shooting and turnover rate was the low point. Some highlights of the season include the first half against Window Rock when the score was 37 to 26 in favor of Wingate. The best full game was a 59-46 pounding of Zuni at the T-Birds home court, an exceptional effort by the entire team. The first district play-off game at Zuni demonstrated the true spirit of the team as the Bears won in OT 45-43. With 4 seconds left, Myrtle Denetclaw threw a full court pass to Tre Milliken who hit the lay-up.
