of a year of progress. But how can progress be measured if it weren’t for those with the spirit to adventure out and “Reach for the Stars”? It is with this belief that this book is dedicated to the memory of teacher-astronaut S$. Christa McAuliffe. “I might be a name that is chosen to be put in the history book because I’m the first of a program, but what I try to tell my students is that 20 years from now people are going to be looking back at I985 and wondering what teen-agers were like.” I. Not pictured: Princeton Brown, Edmund Begay, Edmund Damon, and Craig Duncan. The freshmen football team ended up with a 2-4-I record - not a real good indication of the football that was really played. The Bear Cubs never quit - twice they scored touchdowns on the last play of the game. Some outstanding players who will probably see some varsity action next year were Danny Gishie, Edmund Damon, Ervin Livingston, Brian Yazza, Rory McCraith, Roy Nelson and An- drew Miguel. The season started out as a great success for the Bears as they tumbled over Crownpoint and Many Farms. A surprise attack greeted them as they lost four in a row which accom- panied by injuries that took starters Nelson Yazzie, Mark Miguel and Kendall Henry out of a couple games. Injuries did not let the Bears down as they went on to win the last three games. The Bears homecoming game against Bernalillo de- termined which team would go to the state play- offs. The Bears went on to win I9-0. They had a great year. People thought they weren't going very far, lacking the starters that graduated but after they lost four in a row, they came out of the slump and fought for what they de- served. They went for the top but lost to NMMI QI-7 in the final game. Coach Ocampo was named Navajo Times Tri-Coach of the Year for his outstand- ing efforts in guiding the Bears to the Independent League State Football Championship Game for the second con- secutive year. Mark Miguel was selected for the first team offense in the Gallup Independent’s all area teams. Arnold David made second team de- fense (lineman), Roland Yazzie second team defense (secondary), and Honorable Men- tion went to Lew Harrison, Roland Yazzie, Arnold David and Calvin Begay offense; Lew Harrison, Nelson Yazzie and Cory Ramon de- fense. For the Navajo Times all area all star teams: Roland Yazzie, first team offense; Arnold David, first team defense. Calvin Begay, second team defense. Lew Harrison, third team offense and Roland Yazzie, third team defense. Joe Miguel and Nelson Yazzie Hon- orable Mention. (photos courtesy of Don Armstrong, Gallup Independent) School is not just a place to study and work. There are many activities in which to be involved. Many students found that by getting involved in something, they could make friends and have fun. Everyone gets something in return. Let activities become an outlet for the hectic school days and make the long days worth it. 62 On the night of the bonfire, hundreds of people gath- ered with a special excite- ment, not just a hyper kind, but even deeper — one of peacefulness. We watched those torches held straight and high as they lit the fire. It took a long time to start, but as it grew brighter and hotter you yelled more and more. The glow on your face was not just from the fire but also because we be- lieved in the spirit of the Bear. As the fire slowly died, your glow continued to shine. The fire would be over, but like embers, your memory of this special night would last.
