Minnie Tom and other students arrived on campus on August 20 for registration. Louise Kirk, Registrar, and unofficial bur exceptional receiver, Raynell Harrison, greeted the over 400 more students than last year, who waited, stood in lines, and answered questions fo become part of the WHS family. WHS, originally built ro honor an 1868 committment to educate Navajo children, enlarged its 1984 horizons by recruiting students from orher tribes. Papagos, Zunis, Hopis, Gila River Pimas, Islera Pueblos, Menominees, and Warm Springs, as well as teachers from schools thar had recently closed their doors, joined the spirited old- timers, and a new song was born: Waving streamers in the Sourhwest wind, Pom Pom girls with megaphones, Uniformed marchers, green-robed singers, Princesses, players, personalities, Joggers, jammers, and joiners, Echoing the spirit song Snake their way ro the primitive fire To chant in unison. Opposite Page: Darryl Ashley and Marie Ben enjoy a giggle. Antoinette Begay finally gor a dare, but he’s hiding. Claudé Anderson blindfolds King Vernon. Ruby Clark may party all night long. Is Michelle Smith tossing a bouquet fo William Castillo? Marc Ray Etsitty finally gor a date, bur she’s falling asleep. JoJo Lasiloo salures classmates. Vernon and Ronald Begay are somber abour exiting. Junior, Helena Begay, eyes with envy graduates Daniel Parker and Valina Pablo. WHS graduated 156 Seniors on May 25, 1984. They and their underclass Juniors enjoyed a Prom in the glittering, balloon- laden cafeteria after dining on a superb steak dinner prepared by Mary Bicenti and her talented culinary crew. The evening continued into the wee hours of rhe morning with movies and video games. King and Queen candidates under the silver star-studded arch are: Emery Lomainrewa and Karen Billie; Sarah Yazzie and Lawrence Begay; Shirley Gould and Donald Arthur; Cynthia Draper and Vernon Begay. Queen Cynthia swings a baseball bar at the Pinata. Charlene Barney and Virginia Etsitry are just a swingin. The staff prefers fo watch. Although only two years of marth are required for graduation, some students took the additional advanced courses for enjoyment and or career preparation. 1984 saw the second year of Compurer Programming in Basic language fraught in an expanded and newly decorared Lab and classroom. Nor only did the computers allow marth students fo progress even further in his her subject area, but it also gave them valuable experience in learning how the computer is an aid at home and work. English And History Help Plan Futures World Hisrory, American Hisrory, Civics, Skills, and Achievement classes concentrated on special events and famous people of the past. The English classes, titled Language Arts, focused on grammar, literature, and spelling. Srudents learned about the library and how to look up references through lessons combining the efforts of both Department's teachers. Spanish, Navajo Studies, Newspaper, Yearbook, L.A. As a result, the accumulation afforded an opportunity for school life togetherness. Although students and staff broke from classroom routine for an hour, some found it easier To watch than work. Jasper Martin says, “'It’s in the bag.” Nearly 1000 students and 150 staff members said farewell to WHS - some unril next year, some forever. Many simply made it through another year while others fondly remember ‘getting in porportion to what they gave”. The value of the effort was silent, reflecting not itself in words or deeds, bur in intangible- in the quier influence of a coach echoing far beyond the bounding line, in the earnest dedication of a principal building an atmosphere of learning, in the goal line strand of a stalwart defense holding the line in the cold and rain against fourth down and inches, in the long seemingly interminable hours of a student struggling over a term project, in the firm patience of a teacher molding minds and characters, in the sensitive eyes of dormitory | counselors firmily dispensing derail, and in the unexpected sunshine of a chow hall trear.
