These nervous little figures were the original Class of 72. Thirty-seven of this first frightened bunch of kids are in the graduating class today. New and interesting faces were met, and very quickly new friendships were made. The situation was very new to us, but our first grade teachers, Miss Louise Aston, Mrs. Lucy McCaleb, and Mrs. Wesley Mae Hill had a wonder- ful time orienting us to such an organized childhood society. At first we had some difficulty in arranging those cryptic little shapes and figures in the order the teacher wanted, for, to begin with, we couldn ' t to save our necks understand how a thought of something could be put down on a piece of paper! But after a few years our teachers finally succeeded in sub- jecting us to the basic fundamentals of readin, ritin, and rithmetic. First off the boys had ignored the girls, and the girls the boys. Later it developed into an antipathy. But somewhere along the line the girls and boys became mysteriously interesting to one another and eventually we all had our little crushes and puppy loves. They ' re so silly now, but then, they seemed so real. We had several memorable experiences in theatrics over in the lunchroom, and very likely ' we shall never forget those hundreds of frightening faces and forgotten lines and Mrs. Moore saying now that ' s all right. 182 Every day for several years we held the World Series, (Softball style), down in the grove. This activity we alternated with playing Tarzan and Jane in the ditch alongside the grove. Sometimes we even had a Cheeta! Somehow five years and summers passed . . . , and in the sixth grade we were beginning to realize how far we had come. It was that year that our class made some memorable excursions. Mrs. Week ' s class went to Rickwood Caverns and Mrs. Deaton ' s and Mrs. Harper ' s classes spent a drizzly day at Little Jerusalem in Cullman. That year, we also constructed our first class float and elected Lynne Kirkpatrick as our first Homecoming Maid. In May of that year, we were the last class to formally graduate from Winfield Elementary School. That summer after sixth grade, we were really apprehensive of the thought of high school. That fall, our fears were justified. We became track stars running to and from classes. Those tardy bells still haunt us. We finally learned what they meant by Six Weeks Tests, Semesters, Mid- Term and Final Exams. bffcP 183 In a motorcycle accident we lost two wonderful classmates that year in the seventh grade. We will always remember them and how much they meant to all of us. In the eighth grade we moved into the new gym and began enjoying the luxury of warm showers and heat in the winter. Boy, was that the life. School became a world full of experiences! Every year, football games, pep sessions, basketball games, tournaments, band concerts, and chorus try- outs were held. Looking back now, we can see we had our share of musicians and athletes and a long line of lovely homecoming maids. 7th grade Janet Burks 8th grade Ann McMillan 9th grade Pam McKay 10th grade Susan Segars 11th grade Linda Prescott In the twelfth grade we had Sandy Mills as Maid of Honor and Linda Pres- cott as Queen over Homecoming Festivities. Our Junior year we worked and connived to give the Seniors the best Jr.- Sr. Banquet ever. Being Seniors proved to be expensive, time-consuming, and loads of fun! We are now at the threshold of graduation. We will soon walk down the aisle to receive our diplomas and scatter to the four corners of the earth, some of us to higher institutions of learning, some to jobs, and some will walk down another kind of aisle. 184 Seniors, let us always remember our experiences at WINFIELD SCHOOLS , cherish our classmates, and live by our motto: Give us a place to stand and we will move the earth. Class Poem Today, Tomorrow, and Yesterday Today is a necessity, tomorrow a need Yesterday is full of shadows we all need to heed. I ' m waling alone now, all by myself, The hand that used to guide me , Has taken the back seat in my life. My opinions, my ideas have all changed, My whole outlook has been disarranged. New problems confront me, But I have strength to cope with them, Or do I? Decisions now are of the essence, The results are my responsibility and mine alone. My childhood is behind me A maze of distorted memories, I have a new life in front of me One I have to make for myself, What will I make of my new quest? Whatever it be, I pray it ' s the best Today is a necessity, tomorrow a need Yesterday is full of shadows we all need to heed. Statistics We took a survey of the Senior class and found 51 still had possession of their rings ; and the other 23 no longer have any use for their fourth finger. The Romantic Status of the class reveals 8 married, 11 engaged, 16 going steady, 38 playing the field, and I ' m still trying. 185 The health habits of our class as a whole, don ' t seem very conducive to long life: 35 drink some sort of cola, one of us likes milk, and an apparently ecologically minded member of our class said his favorite drink was water. 37 had other preferences. In twelve years of school we apparently have not learned to read because 55% of us ignore the Surgeon General, 20% chew, another 20% wisely plead the 5th Amendment, and an angelic 5% don ' t partake. The traditional lover ' s lane has been abandoned by this class and we are reportedly parking in Grandma ' s Cornfield, under bridges, in front yards, and more conveniently Pearces Woods. Continuing with our preferences we find that all two of our Soul Sisters voted WENN and Tall Paul as the Soul Sound of the South while the Anglos went north for WLS and Bill Bailey. 63 of our number prefer Alabama over Auburn and we had a write in for Ole Miss. At the Cinema, Love Story was popular with the Seniors. Arriving at the physical aspects of this class, we find that of our 74 mem- bers we consist of 70 Anglos, 2 Afros, and 2 perfect blondes. The average boy is 5 ' 11 tall, wears a size 10 shoe and weighs 180 lbs. The average girl is 5 ' 5 short, wears a 6 1 2 shoe and weighs a hefty 120 lbs. While much has been said concerning the impatience of youth I think it is interesting to note that the composite time we have been enrolled in school to date totals 425 years, 8 months, 25 days. 186 Last Will and Testament Greg Addison leaves his tube of Clearseal to Carlos South.
