V ' r. i ' , % .t ' ' HOMECOMING QUEEN and ESCORT It was a lot of hard work . . . . but the results were pleasing! [Ban cf iBan aue iOan cf Con cer SocA J fop Gfass yfis ory Although Mrs. Lucy and Miss Louise had taught school for years, and were well ad- justed adults, this graduating class of 1963 is responsible for much of the liberal educa- tion the two of them acquired during our first year of formal schooling. Unlike most other first graders, our group was neither timid nor subdued. It is rather ironic that ours is the group that began school in the churches. But thanks to Miss Louise and Mrs. Lucy ' s gigantic efforts we did not loose any of the precious moments of the first grade. Being in the new building our second year with so much playground space was like turning a herd of cattle from the stable into the green pastures. We ranged far and wide and grazed greedily. During this year we added the personages of Tommy Stiles and also Linda Langley who later served us well as Homecoming maid. In the third grade, Friday highlighted the week for the girls; for the boys it was pure torture to drag us through rhythms and folk dances. We were an exceptionally healthy group which was born out by the fact that Mrs. Moss ' s fourth grade section had perfect attendance for a solid month. We were rewarded with a half holiday and the treat of treats - a popcycle apiece. Fifth grade moved rather uneventfully under the guiding hands of Mrs. Fowler, Mrs. West, and Mrs. Bowling. The sixth grade we really blossomed forth. Our own Dennis Greene was selected to be Captain John Smith for the annual P.T.A. program under the direction of Mrs. Ina Murl Moore. Our boys were handsome and debonaire as sailors and the girls never looked more haggard than they did as grease-painted Indians. After a wonderful year we bade good-bye to our beloved principal and counselor, Mr. Cordon Crawford, in as dignified graduation as our group was capable of. By this time we had learned that each year we loose a few and gain a few. How- ever, in the seventh grade we got a real pupil transfusion when Liberty, Concord, and several other surrounding schools were merged with Winfield. We were glad to have our forces marshalled as we encountered High School and Mrs. Deaton. Never had we looked forward to vacation with such anticipation as we did that year. Only in later years did we value the training we received at her hand. Our eighth and ninth years involved a succession of exciting events including: football games, cheerleader tryouts, basi etball tournaments, and various other school activities. In the tenth grade our group was again strengthened by influx of students from Wayside who have figured greatly in our last school years - among them our pretty Homecoming Queen - Freda Langston. Eleventh grade, and we frantically began selling magazines - those Seniors had to be fed. This year too, Football Banquet became extremely important in our lives. Those who were asked were regarded with awed admiration by the group of us old maids who enjoyed the picture show that night. Gratifyingly we finally became Seniors. Rings on our right hands were never heavier. We regarded with disdain the lower classmen who had the audacity to accept a 1963 Senior ' s class ring. There are only 36 of the original first graders in the class now. However, our group has been enhanced as a result of the many additions. Through the muddle of Pirate Chest preparations, invitations, superlative selections, and cap and gown rentals we have emerged tonight a group of dignified Seniors. We have come thus far by the grace of long -suffering teachers, undaunted parents, per- severing church groups, and despite of some of our own antics. Our destiny from this point forward will lie more wholly upon our own shoulders and depend upon the degree of perseverance we have developed through the years. Let us go forward with the de- termination to justify the faith shown in us by those persons who have shaped and molded our lives thus far - remembering that - What you are tomonow, depends upon what you do today. by CLASS HISTORIAN Betty Tidwell Glass iPoem Once a famous poet took up his pen and wrote The following, and I quote: One ship drives east, and another west By the self same winds that blow; It ' s the set of the sails, and not the gales That shows them the way to go. This applies to mankind, as to the ships at sea The acts and deeds of each of us will decide our destiny. If we see our goal as fair And aim our life course there, Then keep our course and keep our faith. Our lives will be first rate. Parents, faculty, and friends have helped us Set our sails. Now we will hold our ships on course and Conquer in spite of gales. CLASS POET Jerry Russell Gfass J ropnecu Now using all the mystic power at my command, which is none, 1 shall tell of the exploits of the members of the senior class ten years from now.
