As children the building was started and has grown block by block. You are building blofks of ideas, knowledge, and forming habits which will be with you the rest of your life. Because building is some- thing that we always do, we have selected building blocks to the future as the theme of the 1958 Lagondan. We hope that as you look through it in later years that it will recall some of the experiences of your high school years. She loved to dance and one of her main ambitions was to be a ballerina. Arlene's untiring devotion was given to her work in the Walnut Valley 4-H Club, where she attained high honors. She was an active member in church, Y-Teen, and Rainbow, and a dmm majorette for the band. Arlene passed away on December 27, 1954, as the result of a serious illness. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Waite, and close friends will always re- member her patience and cheerfulness during the long months of her illness. by Pat Webber gl? cmI220I:y DANIEL Ross BURLEY Daniel Ross Burley was born on April 6, 1938, in Winfield and lived here all his life. He was a sophomore in high school when a joint of oil field drilling pipe fell on him near the machine shop of the Federal Supply Company. He passed away on December 11, 1956. His father, Everett H. Burley, his brothers, his sisters, and friends will always have fond memories of Danny. by Nancy Blanchard S H if I Q NX QI! Regardless of the number of years that I have had the opportunity to work with the students of Winfield junior-Senior High School, I shall al- ways treasure the memories of the 1957-58 stu- dent body. These memories will include the achievements in athletics, music, forensics, dra- matics, student government, and scholarship. I am sure that I shall never forget the 1957 Vik- ing football team that removed the door-mat to the Ark Valley League title from the lips of the critics and played the final game of the season for the championship. Equally as memorable will be the outstanding performance of musical organizations in Oklahoma, and the fine record the class of 1958 made on the Scholarship Qualify- ing Test. The excellent dramatic productions, the victorious debaters, and the effective functioning of student committees have added much to an en- joyable school year. The spirit, cooperation, and talents of our stu- dents provided me with much personal satisfac- tion and pride. I am certain that if these qualities are retained and exhibited throughout their lives, the present students of Winfield High School will take their place as valuable and effective mem- bers of their communities. Some of them have given freely of their abilities to tasks in various school activities far above the average de- mands. While these efforts are re- warding to them, the school is en- riched thereby. These students were given the honor by their classmates of being elected for the service awards. After the seniors nominated them, from JEAN SWOYER JANE WEATHERS PEGGY SCHUYLER Wk the top twenty, the teachers made the final selectioh. They ranked high in the follow- ing requirements: dependability, scholarship, offices held, commit- tees served on, extracurricular ac- tivities, ability to get along with others, and citizenship. For their contributions to the school, these, then, are the seniors who have given the most service to the school. It was almost un- believable to see a team progress as rapidly-since only 18 points were scored the previous year. For a team to come from a doormat of 1956 to a top contender in the Ark Valley league of '57 is one of the season's highlights. The last league game of the year settled the league championship with Arkansas City winning 12 to 6. The best ball game was played at Newton when the Vikings won the second game 46-7, coming from behind after Newton ran a kick-off back 95 yards. That night the team proved that Winfield would be a contender in the remaining games. Primarily the team was a senior group, usually starting eight seniors and three juniors. The big reason for the improved club was the fact that for the first time there was adequate bench strength in all posi- tions. Sophomores and juniors did an excellent job. As co-captains Bill Bottorff and jack Myers showed outstanding leadership along with other seniors. Jan Cobble and David Norris did a tremendous job of quarterbacking with Larry Brown filling in well from the sophomore squad. The team's running attack was well balanced with Norris, Akin, and Melburn Brown being among the league's top scorers. Working harder and harder with each week of practice, the boys showed improvement with each contest, Even during the flu epidemic with almost half of the team out against El Dorado, Winfield played terrific ball and won 19-14. Teamwork and hustle is a combination which is hard to beat and that's just what Winfield had that kept the Vikings moving. DICK CATE took over and scored four points for our margin of victory. l.ARRY COOLIZY played an outstanding game against Wichital Southeast especially. Hustle and determination paid oft' for him in that game. PAUL SPRINGIERS hook shots, Qleft, of coursej perhaps proved the margin of victory. His antics and rebounding were amazing and delightful to the crowd. The shooting of SCOTT CBrutej HLGGINBOTTOM, in our game with Hutchinson, made our game with them a near miss. Scott is our heavyweight center. The running jump shots of DAVID NORRIS and GENE KELLUM were on occasion timely and beautiful to watch. Dave, a consistent scorer and Gene with his high trajectory shots, were always in there battling against Vifellington where both did outstanding jobs. ' Everyone wants to play but there always has to be the reserves like: GERALD ROBINSON, who saved our necks at Ark City, KIRK HARRIS, who steals the ball but won't shoot, JOE BELDON, that has pushed the others for starting posi- tions, and KEITH BRILES, the scrapper. These boys deserve the credit for making the team what it is, along with their COACH, JOE THORTON. Wiiis are not judgements of a successful season, if they were, ours hasn't been outstanding. When you consider all factors one must give credit to this outstanding squad for their accomplishments. 99 iw . MR W, E75 ,X ' 5' -'L3?VNi74I1T 1... Q g. iz .
