Chairman of the Kansas Commission on Aviation Education, and Chairman of the Kansas State Teachers Associa- tion Planning Commission. Meetings of the organization throughout the year stressed the general purpose, Ther Liberation through education of the individual and society from the handicaps of alcohol, of Alied Youth members. Superintendent Evan Evans, who is a mem- ber of the national sponsoring committee of the Allied Youth, presented the charter in. the ahsence of W. Roy B1-egg, national exec- utive secretary. Band performances included the group's play- ing' at all home football and basketball games, their participating in six parades and their play- ing at peip assemblies. Public appearances included concerts at Stew- art Field House March 4 and May 12. At press time the band was planning an outdoor concert to be given in the spring. Wrestling ' U Season 's Record Winfield's grappling squad coached by Lauren Warford placed three matmen in the State wrestling tournament at Goodland, February 23. Myron Roderick, state champion of last year in the 127-pound class, took first in the 133-pound class this year: Robert Harris took fourth in the 127-pound class: and Dale Hines took fourth place in the heavyweight division. Four other matmen qualified for the State tourna- ment by winning in the regional. They were Frank Sturm, J.C. Harding, Ronald Overeem, and Donald Overeem. OliverHiebert took over the crew after BillMedley was called to Service. The B squad triumph- ed at least once over every opponent except Wichita North. Viking cagers complet- ed their 1952 basketball season with an 11 win 8 loss record with much of the team's success due to the untiring efforts of Coach O. C. Thomas who retired from coaching duties at WHS after 23 years. The Vikings finished in fourth place in the Ark Valley. ln the regional tourna- ment the locals stopped the Arkanses City Bull- dogs, however Winfield's squad lost an overtime game to Wichita East in the finals after the Aces had tied the score in the last seconds. The course is organized to correlate closely with the other subjects in the curriculum, especially with English, mathematics, and history and in- volves considerable training in art. The two major publications of the school, the Winfield Oracle and the Lagondan, are printed by the students of the printing de- partment. Many of the printed forms used in the administration of the Winfield Public Schools as well as programs used by the organ- izations of the high school are printed in the school shop. Lauren R. The Winfield Chapter of Future Farmers of America with the help and advice of Ira Plank and John Lowe, the leadership of the officers, and the cooperative efforts of the members had a successful year. Outstanding accomplishments of the year included the officers' attending the FFA National convention at Kansas City, Mo., a membership of 101, the largest to dateg and the annual banquet, February 13, at which the State Farmers were honored. Winfield Future Farmers have collected their share of awards at contests by receiving the Gold Medal award as one of the top chapters in state, fifth in the farm machinery exhibit at the State Fair, a gold and silver award at the officers training school, fourth in poultry and livestock judging at the district contest, eleventh in crops at the district, Joe Gordon's first in public speaking at the district contest, and the shop team's fif- teenth place at the district contest. The net worth of 52 members of the chapter in their own home farming program is S57,736.09. Winfield's new Vocational building which will probably be ready for occupancy about January 1, 1953, will malke it possible to offer a more nearly complete program for both high school students and adults of the community. Some of the courses available in the new building will include 'General Shop for junior high students, Cabinet Making, Carpentry, Drafting, Crafts, Radio, Printing, Electricity, Electric Wiring, Welding, Gen- eral Metal Work, Farm Shop, Vocational Agricul- ture, and 'Food Processing. Special evening courses will be available for those desiring them. The completed building will be 304 feet long, 228 feet wide and will have a floor space of 45,000 square feet. When completed the 'building will cost albout 3S560,000 exclusive af equipment. The value of new and used equipment will be more than S75,000. 'Some modern features will include a dust collec- tion system that willl remove dlust and shavings from machines by suction, a canning and food pro- cessing laboratory in connection with the Vocational Agriculture department, and a 'large electric crane for moving heavy equipment in the large farm shop. The walls of the halls will contain display cases, and the shops will be equipped with Bradley wash' fountains. The first section which includes the music hall was completed in the summer otf 1951. The administrative offices will be located in the southwest corner of the building. J. H. Douglass, newly elected vice-principal, is in charge of the vocational department. Vocational Building l.al:in Club Latini Socii, the Latin Club, is composed of present and former Latin students. Officers were Ned Graham, presidentg Willis Murray, vice-president: and Shirlee Smith, secretary. Miss Helen Baker is the sponsor. Spanisb Club The Spanish Club with Miss Helen Johnson sponsor, had the following interesting speak- ers this year: Eunice Ballock, Uruguayg Otto- mar Lehenbaur, Argentina: and Isaac Ortiz, Puerto Rico. Spanish members sponsored aColumbus Day program. The Club held its banquet April 29 in Recreation Hall. The inter-society council discussed issues concerning the societies. Among the duties of the council this year were the setting of the dates of ticket sales and the planning of the inter-society games. Bank Girls Jane Youle Alice Cook and Phyllis Rex- road were in charge of the activity tickets and lyceum ticket sales this year. Under the supervision of T. H. Vaughan, the bank girls accepted the payments on tickets, kept the records, and distributed the tickets. Clubs and Organizations Assembly Planning Committee Responsible for the senior high assemblies this year was the assembly planning ccm- mittee. The committee included Richard Stone, Bob Hartley, Martin Hanna, Jim Lowe, Suzanne Schwantes, Joan David, and Cora- lyn Stayton. Led by John Cook, president:Jimmy James, vice-presidentg Jo Ann Keely, secretary: Sadie Sutton, program chairman: and Nancy Brown, membership chairman, the club was in charge of improving posters put up around the school. The Club made decorations for the Christmas concert and for some school parties. Projection Boys Projection boys during 1951-52 were Bob Seyfer, Billy Breedlove, Richard Kelly, Charles Stewart, Billy Standiford, Royce Moon, Ivan Frieden, and Eddie Wright. In charge of Visual Education is Leo G. 'K Folck who selects these students. 2 The boys operated the machines for the showing of films to the classes and assem- ies. Clubs and Organizations Library Helpers Student librarians this year were Margaret Brooner, Carol Wunderlich, Carol Calvin, Joyce Fry, James Nelson, Virginia Craig, Lucille Bonewell, Charlotte Jones, La Donna McCardwell, Mary Lou Heydecker, Carlene Hamlin. The principal duties of the student librarians are finding and checking out books and mag- azines to students and teachers. Miss Ruth Hanson is the librarian. Junior Play Cheaper by the Dozen by Frank B. Gil- breth Jr. and Ernestine Gilbreth Carey was presented, March 20-21, by the junior class under the direction of Miss Maxine McCor- mick. ' The play tells of two young people remem- bering the happy times when their whole family was together.
