Q Chorus Winfield Vikings love to Warble! The mixed chorus of one-hundred and one voices is a top music activity of the school. Director of the vocal department is Mrs. Foster Newland. The first public concert of the year was presented at the open house last fall and the annual Christmas program was presented by the choruses combined. The small vocal ensembles include the senior girls' ensemble, boys' ensemble, triple- trio, and the girls' quartet. The choir trip to Wichita fahl those memorable two dayslh on April 11-12 always highlights the choirs singing year. The mixed chorus, senior boys' and senior girls' ensembles, and the senior boys' chorus received rating I, and the girls' quartet, senior girls' chorus and the triple trio rat- ing II at the music contest at the Wichita festival. Those receiving Al rating participated in the state music contest at Emporia May 3. The combined choruses presented the music at Baccalaureate. Elijah ticket sale and 'contributing to the Red Cross and Infantile Paralysis fund. Theater orchestra performed at all of the school plays and the style show. Flagswingers were Betty Brown, Joan Martin, Billie Carrell, and Martha Bridge, and the twirling division was composed of Darlene Reece, and Martha Reece. Lawrence Bean, Rodney Elliott, Bob Rose, Bob Kadau, Jim Watkins and David Kennedy comprised the color guard. George McNeish ably served as drum major. Ensembles furnished music for different civic organizations and service groups. Mem- bers of the string quartet were Ada Mae Maddox, Lilajane Hiatt, Charlotte Mossman, and Barbara Shirley. Those making up the woodwind trio were Gwenda Guild, Connie Chapman, and Dar- lene Reece. Orchestra and band came home from the Wichita music festival this year with top honors. Orchestra received highly superior plus while the band rated highly superior. Instrumental entries in the state music contest at Emporia were astring quartet com- posed of Lois McNeil, Junea Cranston, Joan Martin, Rosalind Grifleth: a string quintet with Patricia Bird, Janet Whitson, Peggy Miller, Verdeen Craine, Durothy Nickels: and the woodwind trio pictured here. Q Debate For the first time in sev- eral years Winfield again had a debate team with B. M. Staerkel as coach. Although all the debat- ers were inexperienced and com- peting in debate for the first ' time, they compiled an excellent record. Those seated in the pic- ture comprised the first team. Lois Atkinson and Betty Lou Harrison formed one team while Bob Rose and Lynn Casselberry made up the other. Among the better showings of the debate squad was fifth place in the large El Dor- ado invitational tourney-over 20 high schools competing: fourth place in the Wichita East invitational tourney from a field of approximately 20 high schools: and third place in the district tournament with Wichita North edging out the Vikings by one decision. In addition a team of freshmen and sophomores won the only tournament for begin- ners held in the state during the past season. Junior High Forensic Students Senior High Forensic Students Dramatics Class Choric Speech Choir One Act Play Cast Q Speech The senior speech classes entered two forensic contests this year, the District Fes- tival at Wichita and the Ark Valley Festival at Newton placing second. Some of the individual ratings are as follows: after dinner speaking --Beverly Williams, highly superior: dramatic reading-Joan Fennema, superiorg standard oratory-Betty Lou Harrison, highly superior: original oratoryelaois Atkinson, highly superior: extemporaneous speakingef Kay Roberts and Don Madole, superior. This is the first year during which the junior high speech group has had a contest. It was held in Winfield. The junior high also organized a choric speech group, the first to be had in the school. The choric group won highly superior in the Junior High Ark Valley Contest.
