Elijah ticket sale and 'contributing to the Red Cross and Infantile Paralysis fund. Theater orchestra performed at all of the school plays and the style show. Flagswingers were Betty Brown, Joan Martin, Billie Carrell, and Martha Bridge, and the twirling division was composed of Darlene Reece, and Martha Reece. Lawrence Bean, Rodney Elliott, Bob Rose, Bob Kadau, Jim Watkins and David Kennedy comprised the color guard. George McNeish ably served as drum major. Ensembles furnished music for different civic organizations and service groups. Mem- bers of the string quartet were Ada Mae Maddox, Lilajane Hiatt, Charlotte Mossman, and Barbara Shirley. Those making up the woodwind trio were Gwenda Guild, Connie Chapman, and Dar- lene Reece. Orchestra and band came home from the Wichita music festival this year with top honors. Orchestra received highly superior plus while the band rated highly superior. Instrumental entries in the state music contest at Emporia were astring quartet com- posed of Lois McNeil, Junea Cranston, Joan Martin, Rosalind Grifleth: a string quintet with Patricia Bird, Janet Whitson, Peggy Miller, Verdeen Craine, Durothy Nickels: and the woodwind trio pictured here. Q Band of the Vikings X . With a gentle tap of the baton Earl Dungan starts his first year as hand and orches- tra conductir in Winfield Hiizh School. From the first roll of the drums and the ring of the trumpets as the h-ind marches on the footbz ll fiell to the last note of Headlines in the district contest, the band played :in important part in Winfield High School activities. School spirit was rogisel in assemblies and basketball game when the down heat was given for Onward Winfield for the start of the game. 9 Vikings' Orchestra With Ada Mae Maddox as convertmistress the orchestra prepared and 1 layed two concerts during' the year. Q Chorus Winfield Vikings love to Warble! The mixed chorus of one-hundred and one voices is a top music activity of the school. Director of the vocal department is Mrs. Foster Newland. The first public concert of the year was presented at the open house last fall and the annual Christmas program was presented by the choruses combined. The small vocal ensembles include the senior girls' ensemble, boys' ensemble, triple- trio, and the girls' quartet. The choir trip to Wichita fahl those memorable two dayslh on April 11-12 always highlights the choirs singing year. The mixed chorus, senior boys' and senior girls' ensembles, and the senior boys' chorus received rating I, and the girls' quartet, senior girls' chorus and the triple trio rat- ing II at the music contest at the Wichita festival. Those receiving Al rating participated in the state music contest at Emporia May 3. The combined choruses presented the music at Baccalaureate.
