The World in General During the 1985-86 school year, stu- dents at WHS saw many news happenings around the county, state, country, and the world. News happenings on the county level included a change in the county grading policy and a new superintendent of Put- nam County Schools. tBottom lefD Steve Baldwin was named new superintendent replacing Kenneth Higginbotham. On the state level, students enjoyed the recognition the school received for being the AA State Champs in football. They also felt sorrow for those whose belongings were lost in the WV floods. Other things that happened around the state were the raising of the drinking age from 18 to 21 and the chemical leaks tTopt which caused a scare in the Kan- awha Valley. Around the nation students saw the space shuttle disaster which killed seven people. It would have been the first time a civilian tteachert was to be in space. Problems of drugs in pro sports and money raised during charity concerts, such as Farm Aid, were all part of the news scene this year. Also in the news was the attempt by Coca-Cola to change its formula, resulting in New and Classic Coke. The election in the Philippines, South African riots, terrorist attacks on foreign airports and public places, and the disas- ter of Chernoybol tMiddlet , a nuclear power plant in Russia, were just a few happenings that made the news headlines during the school year.

Included in the sections of this yearbook are not only accounts of what went on during school, but after a school day and after a school year. The staff and I would like to invite you to open, look, enjoy, and close this seventh volume of The General, keeping in mind that this book was conceived, designed, and concluded all for you, the student body of Winfield High School. Sincerly, Cassy Salgado Editor iLeftl Amber Kuhl enjoys the first days of spring. Opening 1
