MONONGAH BEATS WINFIELD FOR STATE WB' CHAMPIONSHIP 20-lk The linfield Generals and the Monongah Lions tangled November 15, 1952 for the West Virginia Class 'B' Championship The game had everything in one would expect in a championship match The Generals took the opening kiokoff and almost scored before losing the ball to Monongah on the one foot line. Monongah took over on downs and brought the ball out to the 39 where they were forced to punt After Winfield had fail ed to score on their first drive, the general feeling was that they would lose their zip But this was not true After a scoreless first quarter the Monongah Lions scored with 6 minutes left in the half Jim Demus circled right end for 19 yards and a Monongah score Demoss' conversion from placement was good and the Lions led 7 0 The Generals failed to concede a thing, and came storming back and scored when Jim Fewell took the ball over from the 5 to climax a 92 yard drive. Thornton ran the ball over for the extra point tieing the score at 7 7 Monongah took the kick off after the touchdown and brought the ball to the lk yard line with 30 seconds left An unnecessary roughness penalty against the Generals placed the ball on the one Quarterback Angelucci took the ball over The third Quarter was a defensive game with neither team able to penetrate the other's good line The fourth quarter was pretty much the same story But with four minutes remaining, Jones took a pass from Angelucci and lateraled to left half Rankin who traveled the remaining 30 yards into the endzone The attempted conversion was blocked and Monongah led 20 7 With Monongah leading 20 7 and four minutes remaining it seemed that the Generals would fold for sure But the Generals knowing the game wasn't over until the horn sounded took the kick off and returned it to Monongah's M8 Kip Payne completed a pass to Tom Ball on the 9 yard line From here the ball was advanced to the yard line where Kip took it over on a quarterback sneak Dent's conversion was good, making the score 20 lh With M5 seconds left, Monongah held on to the ball until the gun sounded ending the ball game Although the Generals, a 2 to S touchdown underdog, were defeated, they were not out fought and the game could easily have gone the other way Monon gah had a definite weight advantage 10 to 20 pounds Considering the disadvan tages the Generals even in defeat can consider this a moral victory 9 . it C 0 on a sneak.
