While time marched on, we learned and grew New members were added to our class, and for various reasons others dropped out along the way. All too soon the years of elementary school were over, and we were ready for high school On a momentous September morning in l9h9, fifty two freshmen enrolled t Winfield High School with Mr Melville B Withers as class sponsor. ted to the offices of the class Cecil Roach, president, Calvin Escue, vice president, Jean Meadows, secretary, and Beecher Arbaugh, treasurer. In a remarkably short time, among our number were discovered great talents which have developed through the years. Many of us soon formed a violent af fection for the upper classmen and teachers and did everything in our power to annoy them. It seemed no tlme until September rolled around again Our nu ber was such that our class was divided in two home room sections with Mrs Neoma Ash and Mrs Suzanne Hopkins as sponsors. Big wheels this year were Calvin Escue, president, Patsy Jo Ball, secretary, and Norma Hudnall, treasurer Sometimes, of course, time would not march, but only drag by. We remem ber biology and the many bugs, snakes, and other varmints caught by the brave girls and timid boys There were some algebra problems, too but enough of that kind of reminiscing We entered the third year with the title of Juniors Very early in the year the class election was held with excellent results e 1+ - a A meeting was soon called, and the following historical people were elec- Calvin Escue was elected for a second term as president He was ably assisted by Marshall Wick, vice president, Jo Handley, secretary, and Jean Meadows, treasurer. Mr Withers was again our class sponsor In October we chose our class rings which were to be delivered the follow ing September. The class was sadly in need of money for entertaining purposes, and every opportunity which presented itself found us there with our limp little money bag By the end of the year we had accumulated a goodly sum, and this wealth was lavishly spent on the Junior Senior banquet One of the high lights of the year was our class play, The Sweetheart of U Baka Pi , directed by Coach Bob Anderson On September 2 1952, thirty one seniors enrolled for their last year at five are left to tell the tale Tom Ball, Patsy Jo Ball, James Christy, Calvin Escue, and Margaret Goble Lewis Because of his good work in the preceding years, Calvin Escue was re elected president. Other officers were Jerry Young, vice president, Patty Glenn, secretary, and Patsy Jo Ball, treasurer. Miss Virginia Anderson was our advisor. The year has been a pleasant one filled with scholastic, athletic, and social activities. The class play Seventeen Is Awfull3Young , and the Junior Senior banquet are two dates worthy of special mention Our history, as you can see, has so far been without tragedy It has been serene and happy, but certainly not monotonous We hope it has been worthwhile. We're leaving now the carefree days, The happy golden hours, Of youthful mirth, and fellowship No other years can hold, For joy does not repeat itself, No more school days like ours We each one goes his way today, Our history has been told , - Winfield High. In their first game they met a Buffalo Valley team that had beaten them 6-O last season. It was sweet revenge when the nGenerals' came out victorious by a score of Ml-7. The win was a team victory with all four backfleld boys scoring at least one touchdown The second game found the Generals traveling to Hannon to play their favor ite cousins. Although Hannon was an improved ball club from last year the Gen erals proved to be too much for them in winning 26-O In their first home game the Generals played their county rivals Buffalo Altnough Buffalo put up a good fight they were obviously out gunned. In this game the Generals' line was air tight, they held Buffalo to a net gain of 31 yards While the Buffalo offense was completly stopped, the Generals scored two touchdowns to register a 12 to O victory Touchdowns were scored by Fewell and Payne On September 26, the Generals traveled to Fort Gay to play the first game between the two schools In this game the Generals' ground attack proved stronger than Fort Gay's aerial attack The Generals scored in every quarter and twice in the second to ring up a 32 7 victory On October 3, Winfield played a very tough Duval team which dominated play in the first half and had three good scoring opportunities to score but did not take advantage of them In the second half the game was a complete reverse After short time in the third period Kip Payne passed to Duffield over center for a score that covered 50 yards In the final quarter Kip scored on a quarter back sneak for the Generals' final score, to give them a 12 to 0 victory On Friday, October 10, one of the most exciting games between the Winfield Generals and the Hurricane Red Skins was pla ed on the Winfield home field this game the Red Skins got off to an early to O lead and never relinquished it until late in the final quarter, when, with but 2 minutes left in the game, Kip Payne scored from the nine yard line on the fourth down to give the Generals a 15 to 12 victory The other touchdown was scored by Calvin Escue. The Gen erals also caught Cook behind the goal line to score a safety in the second period. On October 15, 'An Poca team which first score came in line Poca's final The final score was On October 2h, to be a tough game, the Winfield Generals winning streak was snapped by a Class out weighed the Generals' team by several pounds. Poca's the second period when Rhumbels scored from the one yard score came in the th period when Jividen passed to Goff 13 to O Winfield traveled to Chapmanville to play what was expected but when the final gun sounded Ross Burke' long runs every time he got his hand on the ball proved to be too much for the Chapmanville team He scored four times in the game to aid in the 32 to 7 viciory On October 31, the Generals played a Van team which they had beaten very few times in the history of the get together between the two schools. This year proved to be the one the Generals had been looking for The Generals had too much for the Van team and scored a 32 to 7 victory in their last home game of the year. In their final game The Generals traveled to Sharples on November 7, to play a team which possessed one of the best Class WBN backfield boys in the state in Doug Stover Although they were bothered plenty by his plowing through center and around end, the Generals' team play was much better than Sharples When the final whistle blew to end the 1952 football regular season action the Generals brought home a 12 to 0 victory The fine record the Generals compiled earned them the right to meet Monon gah in the state HBH playoff at Parkersburg 'M 4742297 I - - O e . Monongah took over on downs and brought the ball out to the 39 where they were forced to punt After Winfield had fail ed to score on their first drive, the general feeling was that they would lose their zip But this was not true After a scoreless first quarter the Monongah Lions scored with 6 minutes left in the half Jim Demus circled right end for 19 yards and a Monongah score Demoss' conversion from placement was good and the Lions led 7 0 The Generals failed to concede a thing, and came storming back and scored when Jim Fewell took the ball over from the 5 to climax a 92 yard drive. Thornton ran the ball over for the extra point tieing the score at 7 7 Monongah took the kick off after the touchdown and brought the ball to the lk yard line with 30 seconds left An unnecessary roughness penalty against the Generals placed the ball on the one Quarterback Angelucci took the ball over The third Quarter was a defensive game with neither team able to penetrate the other's good line The fourth quarter was pretty much the same story But with four minutes remaining, Jones took a pass from Angelucci and lateraled to left half Rankin who traveled the remaining 30 yards into the endzone The attempted conversion was blocked and Monongah led 20 7 With Monongah leading 20 7 and four minutes remaining it seemed that the Generals would fold for sure But the Generals knowing the game wasn't over until the horn sounded took the kick off and returned it to Monongah's M8 Kip Payne completed a pass to Tom Ball on the 9 yard line From here the ball was advanced to the yard line where Kip took it over on a quarterback sneak Dent's conversion was good, making the score 20 lh With M5 seconds left, Monongah held on to the ball until the gun sounded ending the ball game Although the Generals, a 2 to S touchdown underdog, were defeated, they were not out fought and the game could easily have gone the other way Monon gah had a definite weight advantage 10 to 20 pounds Considering the disadvan tages the Generals even in defeat can consider this a moral victory 9 . it C 0 on a sneak.
