The students from Aki-Fuchu High School in Hi- rosliima enjoy coming to Windward. School life is so different here than m Japan. In Japan, the students must wear uniforms and have many rules andrestrictions. When they come to Windward, it is difficult for them to adjust to all the freedom. It was just as difficult for the Windward students to adjust to life at Aki-Fuchu, espe- cially wearing uniforms. We hope this program contin- ues for many years and that Windward students will go to Japan. 93 WINOWARDIAN ACADEMICS i LEARNING RULES .S WINDWARDIAN HaM !■ Play my instrument I ' d like to thank all the little people. Six of the 12 team members were rookies and a seventh, Danny Horowits, rejoined the team after a two-year absence. Undoubtedly the season will be remembered for the outstanding preformances by team captain, Gabe Ganor. After an early season loss at Pasadena Poly he went undefeated through the next ten races, including an historic victory against Brent- wood School-the first ever by a Windward runner. In Liberty League competition he was invincible lor two straight seasons and won the League ' s MVP award two years in a row. Seniors Kenny Salkin and Kaz Mc Coy set a fine example for the rest of the team and were rewarded for their hard work with places on the school ' s all-time, top-ten list of times recorded at Mar Vista Park. Chris Templeton, Jonathon Landreth, Brent Lewis, Todd Czerwinski and Kevin Brent deserve special credit for rousing themselves, sleepy-eyed during the Catalina block to run three miles before dawn. Runners-up in 1984 and third last season, this year ' s team won nine con- secutive Liberty League games to clinch the title. Windward ended the regular season with a league record of nine wins and two losses (13-5 overall). The historic season had its share of highlights - and heartbreak. Among the highlights was the dominating midfield performance of seniors Gabe Ganor and Josh Katzman with sophomores Robb Hirsch and losh Perttula. Hirsch, Perttula and Ganor added 1 5 goals and ten assists to an already potent attack. Leading that attack was senior Will Adams who scored 15 goals, bringing his career total to 27, a new school record. Senior Paul Nieberg scored four of his own, bringing his total to 23, fourth on the all-time list. At the other end ol the field goalkeeper Doug Olken set a new team record with six shut-outs (one better than the previous season record). Heartbreak was felt by senior Jonathan Landreth who had to miss the second hall of the season with torn ankle ligaments and by Ganor who had to sit out the first round playoff game with ' flu. Members of the championship team were; (Seniors) Gabe Ganor and Josh Katzman (cocaptains). Will Adams, Paul Nieberq and Doug Olken; (Juniors) Robby Solomon, Brett Roman and Ben Austin; (Sophomores) Jay Goodfader, Lucas Meyers, Robb Hirsch, Josh Perttula, Tony Katzman, Chris Templeton and Jonathan Landreth; (Freshmen) Brent Lewis, Josh Leonard and Edward Templeton. This is the first year that we have sent students down the Colorado River for the Fall Block. This is the first year that we played baseball on our new facilities. This is the first year that the Student Government redefined itself and reasserted its identity to have maximum impact on the school community. But Windward is also a place where traditions abound. This year those traditions of welcoming friends from every land, loving and supporting one another, and striving for the best academically and socially were reaffirmed by the students of the Windward community in the 1985-1986 school year. To my mind, Windward continues to be one of the best places to go to school. That is what Shirley Windward wanted when she founded the school fifteen years ago. That is still the driving ideal that each of us at Windward seeks to achieve. This year, perhaps more than any other in recent memory, our students have worked to build on Windward ' s history and to forward its traditions of support and excellence. 1985-1986 has been a very good year to be at Windward.
