The framework came first gradually, from which all else will stem. Page Just as a building is con¬ structed, so our lives are con¬ structed. We have placed each board carefully, letting our structure take many shapes. We found our building was supported as we added more stories and more stairs, each step leading us forward. 4 00 Page With the help of our co¬ workers our building has been strengthened. Many sto¬ ries have been completed. We will continue to build and help to better ourselves and the people around us. D b£ as CU Page Page THE FIRST STORY CURTS. CHRIS D. JOHN M. ELLEN C. STAN S. PASTIME Partying SEASON Summer VACATION SPOT Beach HOLIDAY + Christmas 14 During the past four years, his guidance, friendship, involvement and understanding have helped us to build ourselves. For this reason, we, the CLASS OF 1981, dedicate the HERALD to: Mr. Robert Oliva. Page Our Senior year has finally come . . . and gone. We look forward to reaching the summit of our building years. Anticipation overtook our thoughts and served as a basis for building our future, through planning, preparing, and constructing. When we found we had made a mis¬ take in our actions, we simply renovated our ideas to fit our original plans. In our constructing, we found that the help and understanding of others along the way made the job that much easier and enjoyable. We found that with the guidance and compan¬ ionship of those who helped us, we reached all of our ideals and goals. Together we worked, learned, studied, and laughed. Most importantly, we grew together to reach a common goal — maturity. We have built our lives to prepare ourselves for the reality of being in the adult world. Our new sense of maturity and wisdom have helped us greatly in facing up to this reality. Now, as we look back on our four years, we realize that our constructing has not yet been completed. We will still continue to grow, learn, and build. As we leave high school in pursuit of our own lives, we remember both the good times and the bad. But with this, each of us has grown into a stronger, more independent person. We can only hope now that each of us will, continue to build, grow, and learn from our past and future experiences. Until we meet again, may you all stay happy and well. “How lucky I am to have known someone so special, that saying good-bye is so damned awful.” 16 O CM Page SENIOR EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE AND CLASS OFFICERS OFFICERS (1-r): Mark Critz, Pres.; June Mag- nani, Sec.; Joanne Sadowski, Treas.; Curt Schiessl, Vice- Pres. During our next four years, many events of worldwide and local importance would take place. On the global scale, while we were freshmen, the world ' s first test tube baby was born in England. We had three different popes in the same year — Pope Paul VI, then John Paul I, and then finally John Paul II, our present pope. On the local scene the Civic Center roof caved in on January 19, 1978, after a bad winter storm. In Windsor Locks, Grants stores and warehouses closed down and were bought out by Finast. There was a special town meeting at which a strong ordinance to outlaw so-called massage parlors was adopted. “Star Wars was the movie that everyone went to see. In the High school we elected our class officers in the fall. We chose Pat Spalluto as our president. Curt Schiessl as our vice president, Vicky Nelson as our secretary, and Terry Schussler as our treasurer. Two of the Raider sports teams had excellent seasons. The varsity soccer team made it to the state tournament quarter finals and the girls ' softball team won the class “M state championship. This was our first girls’ state championship in any sport. The high school band had a successful exchange concert with the high school band from Milford, New Hampshire. Also in the spring, we went to the senior class fundraiser “Fright Night. Then June came and our freshman year was over. We returned to high school in September as Sophomores after a too-short summer vaca¬ tion. In state elections in November, the Democratic nominee for governor, Ella Grasso of Windsor Locks was re-elected. Con O ' Leary and Joyce Wojtas were re-elected to the state legislature. In the spring we heard about the Three Mile Island nuclear accident that took place at Three Mile Island, Pennsylvania. “The Deer Hunter and “Animal House were two of the most popular movies of the year. In town, the Congregational Church was the first church in Windsor Locks to name a woman as assistant pastor. A Senior Citizen Center was opened on Oak Street. In the spring of our freshman year we had elected class officers for our sophomore year. The people we chose were: Bert Valbona for president, Dave Colli for vice president, Chris Grant for secretary, and David Martens for treasurer. With the help of our four officers we chose our class rings, which we would receive in the fall of our junior year. While we were sophomores many of us watched or participated as the boys’ soccer team, an underdog, upset many top teams in state tournament action. Although the boys made it to the final, we lost 4-1 to Guilford, the favored team. The girls’ softball team lost in the quarterfinals and were unable to defend its state championship. We applauded the successful class play, “My Fair Lady in the early spring. We par¬ ticipated in the 1st German-American cultural exchange program, as German students spent three weeks in Windsor Locks. In the summer Windsor Locks’ students went to Germany to complete the exchange. Three fires broke out in the school during the spring. One fire destroyed part of the girls’ locker room and two others caused damage in the main office. When we left school in June we didn’t know that in the summer months ahead we would be forced to stand in long, hot gasoline lines. We did know that half of our high school life was over. We returned to school in September as upperclassmen. One of the most important events of the century began on November 4, 1979, as Iranians in Teheran, Iran, seized control of our American embassy in Iran to protest the United States aid to the Shah. All but one of the black hostages and all but two of the women hostages were released after the takeover. In the spring, Richard Queen was released because of health problems. “Kramer vs. Kramer, “Breaking Away, and “The Empire Strikes Back were the top movies of the year. One of the most important events in Windsor Locks also took place that fall. On October oo 00 Page 3, what we first thought was just another fall thunderstorm turned out to be a tornado. This terrible storm caused the loss of three lives and millions of dollars of damage. Many buildings on Turnpike Road were completely destroyed, but Windsor Locks and neighboring com¬ munities pulled together and rebuilt what had been ruined. Reverend McQueeney, pastor of St. Mary’s Church, retired after many years of service. The class officers we had elected in the spring of our sophomore year were: Mark Critz, president; Laurie Wenc, vice president; Carol Preli, secretary; and Joanne Sadowski, treasurer. The girls’ soccer team, in its first year of existence, made it to the state semifinals before being beaten. Our class rings were delivered in the fall. On May 16 we held our successful Junior Prom at the Colosseum Banquet House in West Springfield, Massachusetts. The band, Teague, played our theme song, “We’ve Got Tonight.” We saw the boys’ swim team become runners-up in the state class “S” division and the boys’ baseball team make it to the semifinals before losing to New London, 2-0. We watched the excellent senior class play, “Oklahoma,” knowing that we’d have to work hard to make our play better. As we finished our junior year, we wondered if our senior year really would go by as fast as all of the graduating seniors of 1980 told us it would. We came back to the school in September as seniors, little knowing how many changes we would face and how many challenges we would meet. Although the Shah of Iran died on July 27, 1980, the Iranians refused to let the Americans in Iran go free. Ronald Reagan, former California governor, defeated Jimmy Carter in the presidential election. In Windsor Locks, David Wenc was elected to State legislature for the first time. Con O ' Leary, a high school teacher who took a leave of absence to obtain his law degree, was re-elected to state legislature. Ella Grasso resigned from office because of ill health. On December 31, William O’Neill became the governor of Connecticut. On January 20, we received the news we’d been waiting for for 444 days the 52 Americans in Iran were being sent home at last. In Windsor Locks, there was an antique car show at Bradley Field to benefit the Air Museum, which had been destroyed in last year’s tornado. We also were faced with changes at the high school. Robert Santamaria, an assistant prin¬ cipal at the high school, was promoted and Harry Harutunian replaced him. The following teachers had retired and were no longer at the school: Ann Buckley, Edward Luke, Althea Cliff, and Peter Sarant. Last spring we’d elected as class officers: Mark Critz for president, Curt Schiessl for vice president, June Magnani for secretary, and Joanne Sadowski for treasurer. Immediately in September we began our magazine drive. We were doing well in our efforts when $500 was stolen. By pulling together, we overcame this setback and were able to go over our goal of $30,000 which set a school record. While we sold magazines we were also faced with a new, stricter attendance policy. There were two walkouts to protest the policy, but meetings with the Board of Education straightened out the situation. An in-school suspension policy was also adopted by the high school. On October 31, we participated in Senior dress-up day and came to school in costumes. We saw the football team win a game after two straight seasons without a win and finish with a 6-4-1 record. Our boys’ soccer team sported an undefeated regular season record and 1 state rankings before being beaten by Suffield 2-0 in a tough state tournament semifinal game. The girls’ soccer team went all the way to the state finals before they lost to E. O. Smith. In the second half of our senior year we looked forward to our senior class play, “Sugar,” which was a resounding success. We held our Senior Ball at La Renaissance in East Windsor, Connecticut, with the band “Whitewood.” We had our senior outing in June. In late June, we graduated from high school. Although the history of the class of 1981 stops here, our individual histories do not. We all continue to build our lives and our futures from the starting point we have established during our high school years. We have learned much about ourselves and the world around us. Our friends, families, and teachers have supported us and we have not had to stand alone. cn oo 03 CU Now, we leave high school to begin to build the rest of our lives. The foundation of our lives has been set and we will always remember our high school days. Our graduation is an end to a part of our lives, but it is also a beginning — the begin¬ ning of our futures as adults. 00 tH 03 CU We have had a good start during our high school years. Many of our individual aims may differ, but we all share common goals — to reach our potential and to build successful lives. Like skyscrapers that touch the sky, we always aim for the highest point we see.
