Page INDEPENDENCE. . . a word that means different things to different people. To some, it means the ability to make their own decisions. To others, it is simply a word used to describe the founding idea of our country. My own connotation of the word lies somewhere in between; independence means the right to be oneself, yet the willingness to learn from others. And a key to the true meaning of independence is cooperation and, especially, growth. The founding fathers of 1776 whom we call independent, demonstrated this idea. Our coun¬ try evolved because they worked together, learned together, and grew together; in doing so, they formed a new nation. On a smaller scale, we, the class of 1976, are the same. When we entered WLHS as freshmen we were independent in that we were gaining responsibility. But, as our high school years passed, we worked together, laughed together, studied together, and mostly grew together. Although our interests varied, we were all striving toward a common goal — to prepare ourselves for the adult life outside the confines of school. Now, as we leave high school to pursue our own lives, we look back on our four years with fond memories. We remember the good times and the bad. And each of us is a stronger, more mature person because of these experiences. But let us hope that not one of us is so independent that we will not continue to learn and grow in the years to come. Janis Malec United States seal adopted 1782 Page CONFRONTATION: It was the beginning of four years during which we would endure time and change, anticipation and fulfillment, success and failure. It was a time for happiness and perhaps even a little bit of fear. We were each one °f many. 1783 Treaty of Paris CM Page Searching f or recognition, we found that the only way to an identity was to speak our piece and bide our time. We had yet to be thought of as individuals . . . First motorboat demonstrated 1784 00 Page We found ourselves in the midst of decision-making and looking forward. Confusion dominated. 1785 First American Turnpike Page ) Struggling not to be overlooked, we found ourselves becoming more involved, developing a sense of awareness, and building self-confidence. Davy Crockett bom 1786 LD Page CONQUEST: Once again it is a time for happiness and perhaps fear. But the way we will travel is neiv and exciting. And this time we will go alone. We will leave as independent individuals. 1787 Constitution drafted VO Page Behind us is a maze of trial and error. We will look back with a smile, but look forward to moving on in the pursuit of happiness. Atomic bomb tests held 1946 Page 1 b THE GAME OF LIFE It is not in the nature of man — nor of any living entity — to start out by giving up, by spitting in one’s own face and damning existence; that requires a process of corrup¬ tion, whose rapidity differs from man to man. Some give up at the first touch of pressure; some sell out; some run down by imperceptible degrees and lose their fire, never knowing when or how they lost it. Then all of these vanish in the vast swamp of their elders who tell them persistently that maturity consists of abandoning one s mind; security, of abandoning one’s values; practicality, of losing self¬ esteem. 1947 Presidential Succession Act VO 03 CU Yet a few h old on and move on, knowing that that fire is not to be betrayed, learning how to give it shape, purpose and reality. But whatever their future, at the dawn of their lives, men seek a noble vision of man ' s natu re and of life ' s potential.
