Editorial We, in growing up, leaving school, reaching out, are like new sown seeds, sheltered, yet all the while storing and ripening. The time of germination is at hand. We will see the quality and usefulness of what we have absorbed. We hope that the teachings of those whom we love and respect will be relevant to our lives, but if the truth and the reality that we find are different from what we have been taught, we will be able to face them because we have faith in ourselves. This faith is born of youthful idealism, of a degree of overconfidence, and of desperation for something to believe in. In searching for something to believe in, we return to the essential, that which we are. We have been sown; our responsibilities face us; and we can prove that our faith is justified. L.C. That which the seed has developed in our beginnings is what we are now. Youth, as a state of mind, is reached only at the culmination of the seed’s growth. The bud, unlike the previous stage, is enclosed throughout development by sepals which protect the vul¬ nerable interior from external antagonists. As the sepals draw away, the bud becomes more self-reliant. The sepals in our lives are drawn away, but not totally forgotten. The institutions which have protected us throughout development are the same institutions which contain our efforts, experiments within this structure. Youth, as an experimental period, is a time when concepts are formed and tested, often without much concern for consequences. Youth is a time when anything is possible and the best is beginning. N.H. The flower is the extension of its former growth processes; it reaches toward maturity, uncertain of its future, influenced by and in integral relation to its surroundings. The striving seed and the beautiful, sprouting radiance of the bud are reminders of the past revealed in the blossom. The changes which have occurred since the flower’s conception may be imperceptible; similar changes in ourselves reinforce our oneness with nature. Petals reaching outward to sunlight through darkness somehow remind us of ourselves. At some growth stages the flower may closely resemble the seed or the bud. Any of our growth levels, like those of the flower, embodies the other nameless thousands while being unique in its own right. Living from day to day and not counting the time, we may never start to begin. To lose sight of the flower is to make the seed futile and the bud a dream. When reality becomes harsh, we may contract inward or reach out to touch the essence of its being, recognize life, and do what we must, rem embering that, like the flower, we will die. The lifetime of the flower does not begin with the unfolding of its petals, and it will not close with their disintegration, for the spirit of the flower, the feelings it instills in others, is eternal as life.
