An occasion such as this will be one of joy and light- heartedness, not one of solemnity. Everyone present has come for an enjoyable and humorous evening, so let us all relax, sit back in our seats and enjoy the Class Night Exercises of the Class of 1941. FRANCIS DELANEY. Q m M . . CLASS HISTORY . . FRESHMAN YEAR 193 7-1938 September 8, 1937 was a momentous and bewildering day for the Class of '41, We went scurrying through the halls trying to find rooms which were always eluding us. Can you tell me where the Latin room is, please? . . . Next to the Library. . . . But where's the library? Aftera week or so, however, we felt as though we had always been students at the high school. In the fall, the soccer team, under the leadership of Coach Wilson, had a very successful season. Our maroon and grey were unbeaten and captured the Central Valley League Championship. Le Cercle Francais was reorganized in November, under the able guidance of Miss Lillian Fischer. The combined Glee Clubs and the School Band presented, on November 12, the smashing musical show, Happy Hours, an original operetta written by the students under the leadership of Miss Dickerman. Several members of our class were in the chorus. Coach john E. Powers' basketball team captured the league championship and so gained the Class B finals. The Twentieth Annual Concert was presented on April 22, by the combined Girls' and Boys' Glee Clubs, accompanied by the Band. H On April 27, under the auspices of the Music Department, the Hartford Symphony Orchestra offered a concert to the entire student body. In May the Home Economics Classes showed us what they had been doing in the world of fashion in an operetta entitled, The Suzanne Shop. Hurray! Vacation. Our freshman days are over! SOPHOMORE YEAR 1 938-1939 Bright-eyed, smiling, and elegantly dressed described the Class of '41 as it greeted John Fitch High in September 1938! As Sophomores, we were what our name sug- gested, the wise fools. Our first assignment was trying to make a favorable impression upon our new teachers, Miss Edith Bradley, Miss Rose Robustelli, Mr. John Rimosukas, an alumnus of this school, and Mr. Leonard Clark. We hope the Class of '41 has not made life too miserable for them. This year, because of an increased enrollment, a new time system was devised. Sophomores, juniors, and Seniors reported at 8:30 a. m. and left at 12:12 p. m. l'47I 'Ill-IIIE TIUNXIS of NINIETEEN FORTYRONE x0J 'RBI' x.V9J ' 'KWYW 'RHI' 'ROI' 'WWI' 'x0J 'WWI' 'YNY' The poor insignificant freshmen toiled throughout the day, their class hours being from 10:00 a. m. to 3:00 p. m. LEONARD CLARK For the fourth consecutive year the Homemaking Department won first place in the Homemaking Contest with local schools. We had proven that we were exceptional. The Department also presented the two successes, There Was An Old Woman Who Lived In A Shoe and l'Renovating Rosie. The Glee Club, under the direction of Miss C. Louise Dickerman, presented a musical, Sonia, The Girl From Russia, which was most successful. Our Class of '41 also established as an annual event the Sophomore Hop, so anxiously anticipated by all. We were fortunate in basketball, winning fifteen games and losing three, which placed us second in Class B. As for soccer, we won six out of the nine games. Toward the close of the year, we were sorry to hear of the resignations of Miss Martha Downs, Miss Caroline Keeler, and Dr. Harold Bender. With the coming of spring fever and the appearance of tired faces, we were given a chance to recuperate from those decisive exams. We Were Off On Our Summer Vacation! ' IUNIOR YEAR 1939-1940 As juniors, we trudged through the same familiar halls. To our advantage three new teachers joined our facultyg namely, Miss Elizabeth Bridge, Miss,Louise Steeves, 'and Mr. Reuben johnson. Each contributed something new to our curriculum. Miss Steeves organized the Girl's Recreational Association with the motto, A Sport For Every Girl And A Girl For Every Sport. Miss Bridge started the Globe Trotters Club for those interested in world affairs from an unprejudiced point of view. Mr. Johnson added safe driving instructions for those students wishing to participate. In the regular course of school activities the following events were prominent: The class officers were: Prerident .................. ............, N ICHOLAS CRUSSANA Vice-Preridenr ........... ............ W ILLIAM CARPENTER Secretary .....................................................,..........,...................... IRENE EVANS Trermrrer .....................,.......................................,. ELEANOR LAJEUNESSE Mr. Bochman, wearing the letter W presented to him the preceding year by Mr. Hoyt, visited our school and influenced us greatly with his talk, Hidden Treasures. In anticipation of Christmas, the combined Glee Clubs planned and presented an original program. Carolers, properly attired, walked majestically through the corridors singing hymns. Many of our classmates participated in the Glee Club presentation, Smile A While. Under the direction of Miss Steeves, the Dramatic Club presented two one-act plays, Jeanne d'Arc and, Who Gets The Car Tonight ? , starring Constance Gordon and Michael Hrynchuk. i-181 THE TUNXIS of NINETEEN lFOlRTY'0NlE x0J 'RUBY' i.0J 'RHI' 'RHI' 'RHI' 'Wahl' 'RBI' 'WHY' 'WWI' The basketball team maintained their excellent record by winning thirteen out of seventeen games. Our first step toward graduation was the selection of our class rings. The standard crest was retained with a slight variation in style. Another exciting event of the year was the Junior Prom, which was the climax to our social calendar. SENIOR YEAR 1940-1941 In September we found old john Fitch High School completely renovated. Most of our familiar trademarks were gone-the initials cn the desks, the writing on the walls, and the gum under our seats. We eagerly assumed our responsibilities as seniors. At our first meeting we elected the following class officers: Premienz ,,.,.,.,,...,.r,,......,,..i...........................,..............., FRANCIS DELANEY Vire-Preriderrz .,,..... .,,.....,.,.......... W ILLIAM CARPENTER Sefrezary ...,......i........................,..... ..... ............ Woe to those who were captured- for their secrets were quickly publicized. The French Club continued along its course without a country to back it, but it certainly had support under the capable direction of its new advisor, Miss Sylvia Bloom. The oflicers included: President, Florence Bloomg Vice-President, Margaret Greenwood, Secretary, Ann Winchester, Treasurer, Rosemary Cerutti. - The Dramatic Club, having the largest membership in years, chose Constance Gordon, as president. Several sketches were presented for the enjoyment of all its members. Utilizing all the materials at its disposal, the Art Club painted its way into a new wonderland of color, producing what we considered real masterpieces. The Glee Club traveled along the musical road to Bagdad, where they pitched their tents and presented a new and exciting hit, The Belle of Bagdadf' Among the leading characters in this musical were Milton Easton, Pauline St. Louise, Constance Gordon, and Irene Plunge. One late October morning, we skipped to school in bows and overalls. It was Baby Day! Our teachers thought we looked quite natural. In the field of sports, the soccer team was very successful. Six games were won, two were tied, and two lost. If the Central Connecticut Valley League had been con- tinued, Windsor would have held first place. Although we were not so successful in basketball as we had been in previous years, we did enter the state tournament. Our baseball team started the season with great success. We broke Glastonbury's unusual record of winning ten consecutive games. Early in March, following the junior-Senior basketball game, a jitterbug contest was held. A faculty jury selected the champions. As we are about to become a part of that great mass of bread-winners, we would like to look back on our last four years spent here and express this parting message to all: We intend to bring into realization some of the ideals and virtues we have gained and to diffuse them in an endless journey far from their source of creation. And as we advance, we shall be aware of the fact that our abilities are limitless. We shall use our basic knowledge as a foundation for our future life. We hope that those who are with us today will then be proud to say, He was my classmate. l49il TTIIIE TTIJTFJPKIIS cMf FQTIP IE FIEIEFSI I7lDI flfhfflDPqIE cwuaurafwonufacwunufacwunurafwonuvnffceurefwunurafwunufacwunurafvunufe . . IRENE'S attorney, FRANCES VENDETTA, moved the jury to tears by his convincing appeal. WALTER WARLEY, attorney for the defense, elo- quently refuted the arguments of the attorney for the plaintiff but was unable to per- suade the jury when they saw the youthful innocence of MISS EVANS. V--BARBARA GRISWOLD has just been given the leading role in the musical comedy, Sophisticated Lady. It is expected that she will make a big hit as star of the show. CHARLOTTE LAQUERRE is now employed in Radio City Music Hall teaching the world-famed Rockettes. G-Gosh, Charlotte always was so modest about her ability, and I am so glad to hear that she is such a success. G-Remember BENJAMIN MARKOWSKI, the fellow who was so quiet in high school? Well, it says here that BENNIE is not the quiet, shy person that his colleagues once knew. He has become Mexico's favorite matador, having thrown forty- nine bulls in one day. fEnters-Norma King--takes a copy of CLASH and hands newsboy 10 cents., G-Don't think I'm too forward, but aren't you Norma King? G-I'm social editor of the Hawaiian news, and CONNIE is on Broadway right now acting in the last play she produced. She's been doing very nicely of late. By the way, MARGARET SCHILLINGER stopped in Hawaii while on her third tour of the world. On her next visit, she is going to teach the natives the dance of the Islands. V-Yum, yum, this makes me thirsty. New drink recently put on the market by one of the fair sex. MURIEL ROYCE has finally tired of drinking Strawberry Cokes, and through modern science has patented a new drink to be called the ROYCE SPECIAL. We'll have to try one of those. K-Here's an announcement of DOTTY TAYLOR'S Dress Shop on Fifth Avenue. On her last trip abroad, Dotty brought back many original ideas. She has designed and is now making a dress for Mrs. Roosevelt. Mrs. Willkie recommended her. V-MARY O'NEIL is running a little modiste shop on Fifth Avenue also, and two of our old classmates, RUTH SANFORD and SHIRLEY PURNELL are her models. Due to Shirley's modeling of sweaters, Mary has to fly to Paris every week for new stock. Ruth creates the hats with frills and dips with the aid of kitchen utensils. They receive the adoration of women, but amused glances from men. ' fEnter-Shirley Purnell and Muriel Roycej R-The Congressional Record, please. R-Look what I found in this magazine. JOHN GUERRIERO is a famous criminal lawyer. LORETTA SULLIVAN has just won the public's admiration for her latest creation, Sarcastic People , and MARION MASON, one of the foremost novelists of our time, has recently published her colossal work, Love, Man's Greatest Treasure. She has also started a romantic adventure, Heart Breaker, which will be presented to the public soon. F P-What do you expect? A class like this is bound to get into the limelight. R-And here's another: EDWARD NAUDZUS is now modeling Look-Rite Hats. It is his pleasant face you see looking down at you from all the billboards. G-The other day while traveling through the Everglades, I stopped at Shirley Main's Sweet Dreams Cabins. She really is doing a fine business due to her cheery personality. Shirley gave me a bit of juicy gossip. She said that ALEXIS WOLLO- VETZ, crack-stunt pilot of today, has been clipping chimneys off houses. He has everyone in the country running for cover because of his wild hedge-hopping antics in his airplane. R-By the way, I wonder what has happened to NICK CRUSSANA? I haven't seen him for years. V-Haven't you heard? He is playing a hurdy-gurdy now. He hired JOHN KRAUCUNAS to dance while he plays and sings to the lively strains of HENRY MOCARSKY'S rendition of Artie Shaw's Hot Concerto. G-Last week when I visited the UNIVERSITY OF WOES, I saw FLORENCE BLOOM and ANN WINCHESTER assisting Professor Schenker, and who, at the same time, should be getting the bums rush out of class by our old classmate of '41, FRANK BOYD. Great fellow, that Frankie. P-Well, well, look at this: FAMOUS NEWSPAPER WOMEN OF THE CENTURY. BERNICE CARNEY, great newspaper columnist, is now working in collaboration with Dorothy Thompson. AUDREY AHRENS has taken over the con- tinuation of Dorothy Dix's column since her retirement. Her stories have been very popular and much in demand. V-What has become of WALTER DANNER and MILTON EASTON, those famous serenaders? K-Oh! They have signed a ten-year contract with Station WHS. You will recall you heard them on the air the other day singing for the Children's Hour. Didn't JIMMY TESTA sound good swinging Mother Goose songs for the little tots? R-CARRIE QUAGGIN was on the same program reading bedtime stories to the youngsters. P-Listen to this! Newrlzoy-EAST POLE DISCOVERED BY HARRY ELLINGWOOD IN HIS PLANE! V-By the way, ROBERT WADE invented that famous auto plane. P-Did you know that LOUIS KOSAK, in his weekly news broadcast, startingly announced that HENRY DUDA discovered gold in his back yard? In the group of the fairer sex who rushed to help Henry dig his gold were: HELEN and GENEVIEVE ELNISKY, IRENE PLUNGE, BETTYE ROBINSON, STELLA NASUTA, and JOSEPHINE MELE. K-It was well that JENNIE KOLODZIEY saw the motion picture, Third Finger Left Hand, as it wasn't long after, that such an event took place in her life. V-There are three new businesses being formed in Windsor. ELEANOR LAJEUNESSE is running a lunch room at the Herman Elevator Lines. On the side, she is married to the head of the concern. ALBERT LUKSTAS is the operator of a successful chicken ranch in Windsor, and supplies all the eggs that the corny comedians lay. JOHN GRISKEWICZ is the head of a famous utility company manufacturing implements to be used in all the butcher shops in the town. R-Oh no, go ahead. P-Well, what do you know about this. I ran into BETTE CLYNE the other day, and she is now nursemaid to the Five Quiz Kids. She has just finished reading all the works of Homer, Dante, Shakespeare, and Milton to them, and is going to start on Macaulay soon. R-Poor Bette, I bet she wishes they could be normal for at least a day. P-And you remember JOHN PARRY. Well, he was just appointed staff photographer for CLASH magazine. Pictures of our former classmates are published in the magazine from month to month. He has approached MILLIE CHARBONNIER to photograph a day in the life of a Woman boxer. G-Girls, I must tell you about MILDRED LOOBY. She is now working as a clerk in the Waterbury Clock Works. This company invented a clock solely for Mildred and .others like her. Every five minutes the clock tells the time in an audible voice. This allows Mildred to continue with her work without her usual craning of neck to gaze atthe clock. V-Fran, if we are going to go to the show tonight, we better drop in somewhere and get a bite to eat. ,G-Where shall we go? A V-I know, let's stop at EMILY'S TEA ROOM.
