We are happy that it has been our good fortune to complete our high school education, but equally sorry that the time has come to leave this school, where We have spent four of the most joyful and Worth-while years of our young lives. Tonight the speakers have arranged a program reviewing a few of the many incidents that during our stay here have occurred to us, as in- dividuals or as a group. During this period of reminiscence and prophecy, it is our sincere desire that you Will find this program interesting and entertaining. And so, to these, our class night exercises, in behalf of the Class of 1937, I bid you Welcome. As the enrollment in the school 11 was large, these 149 pupils found themselves attending the after- 'Vff 'Q' noon session. The first class meeting was held early in the fall. Miss Lena Brown was elected our class sponsor for that year. The Windsor Tercentenary was celebrated from September 24 to 26. A parade and play at the high school were two of the main features. The Glee Clubs took part in the parade and made a striking appearance in their caps and gowns of black and red. Governor Cross and his Foot Guard were in the procession and also representatives of different organizations. lt was a very colorful affair and greatly enjoyed by both spectators and participants, although some were weary from the long walk. The Miracle of the Nativity was presented in December and many of the new freshmen took part in this Glee Club presentation. The winter of 1933-34 was quite stormy and a blizzard occurred a week before our February vacation. This made traveling impossible and school was discontinued for that week. ,Our vacation in that way turned out to be two- weeks in length instead of only one. . In the spring our classes were interrupted by the pounding and ham- mering of the workmen who were building the school addition. The class trip to Lake Compounce Jn June 18, 1934, wound up our freshman year and everyone looked forward to the next school year as Sophomores. SOPHOMORE YEAR School Sessions began on September 10 after a week's postponement. This postponement was due to the fact that the addition to the school was not completed. Much to the surprise of the Sophomore class they found they were to be the first occupants of the new building. Dr, Russell became our new superintendent, September, 1934, upon the resignation'of Mr. Howard. At the first class meeting, Miss Fischer was chosen sponsor of our class. S Distinction came to our class when Miss Anna Perekiszka won a cash prize in an essay contest sponsored by the National Livestock and Meat Board of Chicago. The Miracle of the Nativity , presented annually by the Glee Clubs, was very successful. Later in the year the Wesleyan Glee Club visited our school, sponsored by the Athletic Association. A small group came and gave in assembly a preview of the concert. The concert was a huge success and was very much enjoyed by everyone who attended. Dancing followed. 35 THE TUWXIVS of WINETEEN THIRTY-SEVEN The Girls' Glee Club of our school sang at the Bushnell Memorial on May 10. The tension ran high as the club was called to the stage first. The numbers by the other clubs were greatly enjoyed by members of our Glee Club. The climax of the day came when the judge, Doctor Dann, gave our Glee Club excellent rating. On 'February 18 a Jamboree and Carnival was sponsored by the combined school organizations. ' Spring sport activities began early and the tennis courts were started with much enthusiasm. Leaving our Sophomore year behind us, we made plans for a bigger and better year as Juniors. JUNIOR YEAR The first high-light in our Junior year was the election of Mr. Crockett as sponsor. The high school was very fortunate this year in obtaining the services of Mr. Theodore Wilson, who has had much experience in physical education. He proved himself invaluable. when he planned a program for physical development for each student. What a time we all had at the Hal1owe'en Frolic, which was sponsored by the Dramatic and Glee Clubs and the Athletic Association! A capacity crowd attended and excitement ran sky-high. When the first cry of Join the A. A. before the campaign ends rang through the old halls of Windsor High, 49 percent of the Junior Class stepped forward to become members. The soccer team showed its colors this ' year by Winning the Connecticut Valley Soccer League Championship for the third year in succession! We were breathless while we watched the latest fad in sports-a Donkey Basketball Game-given on February 14 in the school gymnasium. The whistle blew and what happened after that could never be explained. On March 20 a Festival of Drama was presented by outside dramatic clubs and that of J. F. H. S. Our Dramatic Club presented The Clod. This was the first time in the history of dear Windsor High that such an event had been held. On February 26 the faculty and student body were shocked by the news of the death of Miss Lena Brown, a teacher beloved by every student. Her radiant personality and ever-present smile had found a Warm place in the hearts of all who knew her. The chief social event of the Junior year was the Junior Prom. On March 14, 1936, a gay crowd of Juniors, schoolmates, and friends assembled at John Fitch High School to dance to the music of Eddie Abrahamson and his Commanders. The auditorium was beautifully decorated, resembling a Mardi Gras festival. This event was very successful and will long be remembered by those who attended. The balloons which were hanging from the ceiling were pulled down at the end and were taken home C whole or burstj as souvenirs. The representative from the Peters Company came and took our orders for rings. Someone suggested that we have smaller shanks, so the company made them smaller. There were many different choices, but the majority of the class purchased onyx and yellow gold, which represented our class colors. The rings were later than the company had promised them, but when they arrived, they were proudly received by the new owners. Flash! Track becomes Regular Sport of Windsor High under the 36 THE CIUWXIS of WINETEEN THIRTY-SEVEN Supervision of Coach Wilson! Tennis Courts are finished! Tennis becomes a part of the regular athletic program! The Debating Club, organized with the help of Miss Keeler, was successful. This club won all its debates this year-an enviable record! An event we shouldn't overlook is the flood that occurred in the spring of 1936. It made necessary a vacation for several days. Vacations are always welcome, but at the end of the summer we were ready to go back to school in the fall-as Seniors. SENIOR YEAR Class activities began at the first Senior class meeting. Candidates were nominated, ballots were cast and we again had the good fortune of having Mr. Crockett as sponsor. We had also a very competent list of class officers: Albert Rimosukas, president, Dorothy Oliphant, vice-president, Norma Peterson, secretary, and James Dillon, treasurer. Excitement ran high during the presidential election campaign. When President Roosevelt visited Hartford in October as part of his tour of New England, a high percentage of the high school body went to hear and see him at Bushnell Park. At the school election the polls were crowded. QThe Democrats won this election.J Baby Day took place in November. The girls wore hair ribbons and carried dolls, but were not permitted to suck their lollypops in class. The boys, dressed in knickers and huge Windsor ties, enjoyed themselves immensely all day by teasing these little girls. ' Miss Cherry Blossom , a three-act operetta, was presented by the combined Glee Clubs on November 20, 1936, and was very successful. Miss Dickerman and Miss Downs directed this presentation and Elsie Pucci, John Halay, Russell Dexter, and Edward Vignone had leading roles. One of the leading social activities of the winter was the dancing class. This dancing class was promoted by John Halay. The instructor, Mr. Ryan, came from Hartford twice a week and gave instructions in ballroom dancing. All pupils who wished to attend this class were permitted to do so in school time and were charged a very small fee. The basketball team of 1936-37 was one that will be long remembered. With twenty victories and only two losses to its credit, this team won the Connecticut Central Valley League and entered the tournament at New Haven. The Boys' and Girls' Advanced Glee Clubs were invited to broadcast over WDRC in Hartford, and on April 29, 1937, this group broadcasted for fiften minutes. During the broadcast all classes in J. F. H. S. gathered in the school auditorium and listened to the radio program. In March the members of our class decided to have the Tunxis as our class book instead of having it as the regular school publication. The Tumris Board was appointed by several members of the faculty and began immediately on the Senior Class Book of 1937. With the coming of spring, plans were started for graduation. A committee was chosen to plan for the Senior Banquet. Committees also were elected for the class gifts, will, history and prophecy. Class Night and Graduation Night are still ahead of us when this book goes to press. We look forward to these occasions as the most memorable events of all our years in high school. We wish to express gratitude to the faculty of J. F. H. S. and all those who have in any way helped us to reach our goal.
