Among these were improving the student lounge, sponsoring several activity nights, and promoting several sock hops after basketball games. Their most important activity, however, was the sponsoring of the Homecoming festivities and dance. The pre-game festivities included a parade through the business district to display the numerous banners, a bonfire after the parade, and a special pep meeting. The coronation of the Homecoming Queen was the highlight of the Homecoming Dance held on December 23. The three contestants were Linda Gaston, Connie Horn, and Kay Krile. Their attendants were Beverly Lawyer, Freshman, Brenda Paulson, Sophomore, and Karen Jones, Junior. The theme of the dance was Snowflake Fantasy . It was enjoyed by all who attended. Several members attended the District Convention, which was held at Effingham on November 20. Student Council members of surrounding schools were given a chance to meet and discuss their problems and projects. the Student Lounge STANDING: J. Hampton, P. Wall, K. Krile, R. Maxwell, M. The Spanish Club is designed to give Spanish students an opportunity to learn about the people of Spanish speaking countries. A new method of studying culture is by the use of films. Two films, La vida un pueblo mexicano and El cumple-anos de Pepita, were shown during the school year at the Friday morning meetings. They were a very helpful aid to promote understanding of the Spanish way of life. The club enjoyed going caroling at Christmas. Members gathered after the caroling party for refreshments. In April, Pan American Night was held for the members and their parents. 40 BACK ROW: P. Giesler, R. Minor, G. Ashmore, J. Schrock, G. Wallace, M. Havens; SECOND ROW: D. Curry, D. Witt, N. Binder, S. The members were always present at the games, cheering the basketball boys on to victory. In order to raise money for this organization, the Pep Club sold blue and gold megaphones to the student body. These megaphones were used by the members to cheer vigorously for the boys. The club also sold black ties to complete the black and white outfits, which were to be worn at all the games. The sale of these ties was also used as a club money making project. 43 BACK ROW: S. The other activities -dancing, bowling, basketball, softball, and swimming - were anxiously awaited. At the end of the year a banquet for the reminiscence of old times was held. Awards were presented to the girls who received the proper amount of points. Points are received by attending meetings and bringing different items to the parties and other activities of G. A. A. The senior girl who had contributed the most to the Girls' Athletic Association was voted on by the other members and had her name engraved on a plaque entitled Outstanding Member of Girls' Athletic Association. The G. A. A. sponsored a dance in the month of November featuring the Devotions. This party and the sale of sweatshirts were the club’s money-making projects for the year. 45 BACK ROW: R. Martin, C. Some of these activities included bake sales, candy sales, babysitting for the children at P. T. A. and planning different activities for each month. In October, the F.H.A. collected one hundred dollars for U.N.I.C.E.F. On December 4 the F.H.A. girls visited Kemmer's Orphanage at Assumption. Many of the girls sent Christmas cards to the children they met on the visit. In February, Dr. Swope from Eastern Illinois University came to a double meeting. She told the girls some of the numerous careers home economics offers. A Demonstration Night was held in March. Several of the girls gave demonstrations on food. In April, they had an Easter Egg Hunt for the small children of the community. These are just a few of the things the F. H. A. has contributed to the school and community. We are happy to say, the F. H. A. is an organization of which Windsor High School can be very proud. 47 BACK ROW: C. Bailey, B. Gass, J. Turner, J. Carr, D. Ground, R. Sims, T. Latch, T. Shafer; SECOND ROW: T. Gaston, B. It was a comedy centered around the guidance counselor’s office in an average high school, Pembroke. As the play opens, the counselor learns that he is going to get an assistant, a female even! Before the curtain closes, a domineering society lady is shown the light, a boy learns his true potential, and the janitor becomes engaged to his assistant. To frost the cake, Mr. Warren, who disdains women, pops the big question to his new assistant. Many laughs were enjoyed by those who viewed the play and also by the persons who put it on. 61 62 WB . • -.v. . , V • • - - - • - . . • - - : . - ■ • - ■ . .• • . z'., s V . - .w v:-. • - , v . • • - FAVORITES Queen Beauty Reigns at Windsor High School On the twenty-third day of December, the Student Council held its annual Homecoming Dance. The highlight of the evening was the coronation of the Homecoming Queen. Daphne Ritche, the reigning queen, bestowed the crown upon Kay Krile, who will hold the position until next year. 64 Senior: Linda Gaston Senior: Connie Horn The Court Junior: Karen Jones Sophomore: Brenda Paulson Freshman: Beverly Lawyer 65 First Place Banner Queen and Court 1 966 Homecoming Highlights This year the Homecoming activities were held on two days. On Friday afternoon, December 17, the Homecoming activities were launched with the first parade in four years. The parade, consisting of queen candidates and attendants, basketball players, cheerleaders, students, and school organizations carrying banners, marched from school, down Maine Street, and back to school. After the parade, the students gathered around a bonfire, wnich had already burned once before that day, to listen to short pep talks given by some of the basketball players. As soon as the bonfire was finished, the cheerleaders led the students in a rousing pep meeting, which was followed by refreshments in the cafeteria. That night the Devils once again obtained possession of the hatchet by defeating the Stew. -Stras. Comets 74-47. Between games the entertainment was provided by the Windsor High School band. The sophomores won first place in the banner contest. On Thursday evening the Homecoming dance. Snowflake Fantasy, was held in the gym. The gym was decorated with a silver sapling, bedecked with glittering snowflakes, and purple and white crepe paper. The climactic part of the evening came as Miss Kay Krile was crowned queen by Miss Daphne Ritchie, last year s queen. The new queen, her attendants, and escorts led the students, alumni, and faculty in dancing. Thus, another exciting, student council - sponsored homecoming was recorded in the annals of Windsor High School. 66 67 MOST DEPENDABLE Mary Jane Paris David Curry MOST TALENTED Katie Bennett David Meador Senior NEATEST MOST ATHLETIC Mary Alice Lenz Jim Hampton Kay Krile David Curry BIGGEST FLIRT Poll Connie Horn Larry Shouse BEST SENSE OF HUMOR Marla James Joe McKenzie MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Katie Bennett Richard Weakley BEST PERSONALITY Kay Krile Larry Shouse 69 RIGHT: Cindy Williamson, Ruth Waggoner, Colleen Baker: BACK ROW: Fred Doehring, Leonard Storm, Wayne Risley. Robert Buchanan, Richard Gibson Starting out with nine straight wins, the Blue Devils played a highly successful season this year. At the end of regular season play, their overall record was 17-5. The Blue Devils won easy victories over Stewardson-Strasburg in an effort to retain the blue and green hatchets. This was the fourth straight year that we have held both of the hatchets. Our team met its first defeat in the conference tournament played at Altamont. However, the Blue Devils overcame this set-back and won the Shelbyville Invitational Tournament in three exciting games. This makes the fourth time Windsor has won the Invitational, more than any other school entered. Once again the Blue Devils have shown a fine record that maintains the tradition of the school. The team was hampered by the loss of their better players to the varsity, but the boys played good basketball, winding up the season with an 8 - 10 record. Despite the losing season, the players displayed excellent ability and an eagerness to play. Several of their games were forfeited with only a slight difference in the final score. However, the team pushed through the season in high spirits. H. S. The school year 1965-66 has been a busy and active one for many students at Windsor High. Classes, athletics, dances, and meetings, all helped to round out the year. As we look back, we have tried to pick some of the bright spots that stand out in our minds as important events of this year. The roads to success through high school are memorable ones. We hope that through this book we have portrayed a span of these roads upon which each of us travels. Education is in itself a wide and heavily traveled road. There are many forks in this road -each leading to some goal set by those who are traveling upon it. Just as some roads are unpaved, so are some roads to success unpaved. There are many rough and threatening sections. However, if the goal is kept in view, all difficulties can be surmounted, and the road will have served its purpose of furnishing a means of guidance. This year is drawing to a close; however, for many of us, this year is only the beginning along the road to success, and for all of us there is much to look forward to. With all these things in mind, we present to you this 1966 POW-WOW. Autographs -IA FRONT ROW: E. Rincker, W. Risley, M. Seng, J. Baugher, L. Shouse, J. Seng. MIDDLE ROW: J. Walden, L. Storm, F. The senior class play, The Brainstorm, ” was presented Friday, April 15 to an audience filled with laughter. It is said that each of us really has two selves - and this play proves the saying. You see the inner self” of Willoughby Adams intent on making a football player out of pompous, stuffed-shirt outer Willy. The Inner Willy, impish other ego of Willoughby Adams, off to college, relentlessly goading Willoughby to becoming a man. A sheltered life with three maiden aunts has turned Willoughby’s spine to sponge - so that in college he is the one who makes the beds and lends money and clothes—that is, until Inner Willy materializes. Yet Willoughby has the makings of a football star—makings that seem to be going to waste as the aunts decide college life is too strenuous for their frail boy and insist that he return home. However, a certain college girl reporter encourages Willoughby to stay and become a hero. The college rooters, too, put on the pressure, and with Inner Willy backing them up, Willoughby decides to stand up to his aunts and stay and play football. Willoughby gets the girl, the football uniform and he gets rid of Inner Willy simply by throwing off his shackles. What is it? On the evening of May the seventh, the students and faculty of Windsor High School enjoyed the annual Junior-Senior Prom. The gym, decorated as an exotic harbor, had a lighthouse centerpiece, and the stage portrayed a ship's deck. As you entered the gym, you ascended onto a pier that led into the gym. It had steps going up to the stage, where refreshments were served, and there were also steps leading down to the dancing floor. The band. Bob Cruzanne and his orchestra, provided soft music which inspired a romantic evening that was enjoyed by all. Inspires Romantic Evening Senior On the morning of May 20, the class of '66 seniors left Windsor High School for Vagabond Lodge, Lake of the Ozarks. They arrived at the Ozarks about 11:00 a. m., heard the rules which they were to abide by, and then checked into their cabins. Some decided to go swimming before lunch while others waited. Friday afternoon was spent sun bathing swimming, speed boat riding, sea plane riding, and having lots of fun. Included in Friday evenings enjoyment was a dance held at the lodge, a scenic cruise on the Larry Don, a weiner roast, or just a moonlight walk. Everyone was to be in his cabin by 1 00 a. m., however there were many wide awake boys and girls that night. ■ Trip Everyone was up at 7:00 a. m. for breakfast on Saturday morning. Then they headed their separate ways until about 10:00 a. m. when each packed his belongings and boarded the bus. Before leaving the Ozarks, they stopped at Dog Patch for souvenirs and a last stop at Bagnall Dam for lunch and more enjoyment. After the long trip home the class arrived back in Windsor about 8:00 p. m. Although they were pretty tired, everyone had many memories of the wonderful time they had on their senior trip at the Lake of the Ozarks.
